Good afternoon guys.  Been a crazy day.  Have 3 emergencies, 3 scheduled hearts, and several consults all on this admission, so we will be busy for the rest of the week.  I am getting ready to do case #4.
Mike, you explained things pretty well.  They do have to relieve the pressure.  Also, they will have to evac the cyst and hopefully clip it and control any further issues.
Spanky, most scopes for ACL, they evacuate the debris from the tear and it will relieve the pressure.  Depending on the amount of damage, you will most likely not need to have more extensive work done.  The surgery is nothing, the rehab is the tough part...sorry.

Better get running.  HOpe that each of you have a blessed day.

Just a quick splash and go.......

MikeC....  Angel prayers for your cousin's procedure.  Just being there for him and his wife will mean so much to them.

Chuck......that isn't one of those fancy Irish walking sticks you are using, is it?  Don't leave it laying around or the wife may find another use for it, one that hurts.  Wink

Pat......that joke was too much.  I'll bet you have a lot of great cow jokes.  The real life stuff you relate is even funnier. Big Smile

Spanky......I hear what you are saying about never having had surgery before and going in for the first time.  Apprehension city.  But the surgeons can do amazing things with the meniscus cartilage and the ACL.  Will say a prayer they can fix issues you have.  Better to have those things repaired now than to wait, suffer, and wind up still having the repairs done anyway.  Inevitable, necessary, and you need to be able to chase the little ones around.

DonB......did you check out quake damage with your surrounding neighbors?  There may be a pole that needs a fixin. Smile,Wink, & Grin

DougM......take care of that cold before it becomes something else.  Hope you are feeling better.  If not, take four shots of Jamesons Irish whiskey and call me in the morning.  St. Patrick's day is tomorrow, so buy a big bottle.  Is the Chicago River still green?

Chief.....I finished the lime and fertilizer thing for the back half of the property before the rains hit, front is next.  Do you ever do soil testing for ph or other content?

Lee.....74 by Friday in FLA?  We'll be in the 60's by tomorrow and will be approaching 70 Friday.  But this won't last.  Back around 1997 we had what is known in these parts as the April Fools snowstorm.  It was a big one.

Later, gang.

Good Afternoon,

Weather getting a litle cooler again, should be near 50 overnight, warm up to 74 by friday afternoon. Also a little rain in forecast. Still high and dry.

Not working as much but next few days I have some work.

Still no word on RV sale, guess it fell thru!

Working on trains a little, want to install a non-flickering set-up for some of my passenger cars.

Afternoon all.  Garden limed and disked.  Two neighbors' gardens disked.  Lawn limed and fertilized.  Went to Home Depot for wifey [her and Lucy went with me].  She got some plants and we got pinestraw for Gail [her USDA buddy who works with her and lives in Rolesville].  Now to shower and shave.  Got Town Board tonight.

SP, speaking of cataract surgery and glasses.  My eye Dr. told me not to mess with lasic surgery.  Said when you get cataract surgery, Dr. is suppose to take your perscription and do lense inplants.  This is done with Ins. money.  Thought that was interesting.

Shake and Bake, now we know the truth.  Told you what would happen if you were naughty.

Glad the guys up north did not get water damage.  Great news.  BTW: where is Hudson?  Is he working OT due to the storms?

Good morning all,

Don, all we got from the quake was one sharp jolt.  Did not feel any rolling and the whole thing was over in about two seconds.  I'm not complaining.  Nothing in the house or train room got knocked over.  No evidence of water splashing out of pool either.  Sounds like you felt a lot more where you live.  Glad you are OK.

This is my week for appointments.  Went in to order new lenses in my glasses yesterday since it has been over a month since my cataract surgery.  Dentist appointment tomorrow followed by doctor appointment on Wednesday.  I did not plan this, it just sort of happened.

I have been looking around for a MTH Southern Crescent proto 2 PS4 that I can buy reasonably or trade for.  So far no luck.  A friend of mine bought one in an auction and rekindled my interest when I saw it run.  I had a proto 1 model and sold it.  Should have upgraded but at the time I had just done four others and it was one two many.

Big sale this week end at local hobby shop in Burbank.  It's 35 miles each way but might be worth a look.

Have a good day,

Ray

Aloha all. Home sick. The cold going around the house finally caught up with me. Oh well. I should be back tomorrow. Hang in there, DJ, hope the news on your knee is good. Glad Jack is drying out. No figuring people that way. Brutus - score! Those Larson doors are pricey. Looks like a challenging day at the local high school district - massive layouts due to the state running out of cash, and some rumored bomb threats which they have to treat seriously - it is probably because of the sunny weather, but you can't be too sure.

 Morning All!

Glad to hear Spanky, Jack and others have not had any damage do to the weekend storms.  Hope all your familys do as well!

We had an abrupt awakening this morning, a little shaker just to remind us where we live. The epicenter was located about 10 miles from here, (almost equidistant between Ray and myself,) it was a 4.4 at 4:08am.  Woke everyone up, we felt a small rolling, then a jolt, (sound of glass breaking), then some more rolling.  Must have lasted 4-10 seconds.  Checked everywhere in the house, couldn't find ANYTHING, broke.  No glass anywhere, strange.  Did splash water out of the pool, and ejected the skimmer cover out of position.  Probably have some aftershocks in the next day or so.  (Of course, the Chief is going to claim it is a result of me mentioning the "grits escapade".)  Funny thing, half an hour after the quake, the local news was showing a freeway with CalTrans doing repair work, and reporting that it was related to the quake.  When they interviewed the job supervisor, he told them they were just repairing a pot hole, from the night before.  The reporter was quite embarrassed.  And of course they are interviewing anyone that will talk with them, the comments are the same.  "Woke up, felt shaking, got nervous, then fell back to sleep."  Oh, hum !

Been working on a little train project.  When a visitor comes over to the layout, and of course they would like to run a train.  With the number of switches I have all over the place, (25) it can be confusing.  So I am writing up some Operating Sequences.  I have documented a "Objective, Set-up, and listing of switch settings.  It is working well.  I've done some simple ones to start with and plan on doing various others becoming more complex.  Then can just show some basic operation instructions and the guest can run a little sequence.  Better than just going around in a circle and blowing the whistle.  Then when they are done, I have a little wallet sized laminated card I give them, showing they have successfully run trains "Without any Pile-Ups" (stolen from Laz).  As it turns out even when I go out it is enjoyable to do something with an apparent objective.  Or seeing if I can run two at once, or making some even more challenging.  Just another way of ringing my bell.

Later,

Hope everyone has a good day.

Big Smilepat do you remember a singer called billy ed wheeler?  he was one of my favorites.  he had a song called "ode to the little brown shack out back".  it was really funny.  a person would have to have used one to find it so rib tickling.  i remember when my grampa would bring me up to his house in wisconsin when i was a boy.  if i had to go at night he would walk me to the other side of the road to use the outhouse, and during the day i would use it to the accompanyment of the yellow jackets drone...ha..ha..navyjack

Navyjack, I don't remember the singer, but I do remember the song. I also remember the house out back, using Sears catalog pages, the yellow jackets, and the lime and shovel we ended each visit with. Good ole days?

Joke:

Chief opened the outhouse door and Buckeye was sitting on one hole with his arm down the second hole.

Chief said "What are you doing?"

Buckeye replied "I dropped my jacket down there".

Chief said "You aren't going to wear it are you?"

To which Buckeye replied "No, but I have a biscuit in the pocket!"Dinner

Morning.  Cloudy and cooler [but not going below freezing all week].  Going to take bagger off of JD.  Pull fertilizer distributor over garden and put out several hundred lbs. of lime.  Disk it in.  Get ready to turn it over with bottom plow.  Will check moisture and if too wet, wait a few days to plow.  Today is my day.  Got a short meeting around noon if I want to attend. ???

Glad Jack has not gotten water damage and the rain has stopped.  Jack, I have sump pump with two boat bilge pumps on deep cycle battery as a back up in case power goes off.  Learned that from big hurricane.  Now I also have backup generator and it powers sump pump.  Still feel good with back up system.  Speaking of cars flooded.  Long time ago SIL and I went to mall at lunch.  When we left, creek behind her office was within its banks.  Started raining harder and within an hour, we returned to her office and her car was flooded.  Water had risen 10 feet to get to her car.  Hour later, big mall flooded.  Water started coming up out of the drains instead of going in.  Was a mess.

Out to the garden I go.  Later.

Good Mornin', ya'll, from sunny Taxachusetts,

After 2 solid days of rain the wet stuff quit last night about 7.  Waters are receding and the aftermath is not pretty for many up this way.  Did you ever wonder how so many people can watch one weather forecast after another for days, and yet their cars still sit in a parking lot or other places until under water?  Or how others think cars are amphibious vehicles all the way to the point where they are not?

During this rain "event" I got to talking with a neighbor I have known for about 22 years and I asked him if his house was ok.  His house sits lower, and operating sump pumps are an absolute necessity to keep his basement dry.  Well, he wasn't ok.  Seems about 3 weeks ago when we had heavy rains and widespread power outages (my place too) that his basement flooded.  Then it flooded again during the the last two days.  He still has no generator.  He can find the money to keep refinishing his basement, replacing furniture and carpeting, buying new appliances, and getting his furnace back up and running.  But he won't fork over a few bucks to buy a generator or re-landscape a bit to divert water away from his house.......all he would need is about a 12" rise in the height of his lawn near and around the house with a drop off further away.  His basement has gotten wiped out more than just the last two times in recent weeks.  This has been going on for years.  Wonder what mold removal will cost him.

How can you pray for folks like this?

Later, gang.

Good Morning all

Dennis – you are so right.  Many times the media passes over the number of killings that occur around the world due to someone standing up for their faith.  We are blessed.  We too have opportunities to be martyrs when we stand up for our faith in the face of persecution, albeit taunting, ridicule we may experience are hardly in the same category as dying for Christ, we are called to act when we see wrong.  A lot of the current trend in our government is directly a result from “silent” Christians.  The loved ones of the martyr can be consoled in the fact that the one they loved are at this moment in the presence of God, which is what we all are striving for.

Jim F – Great find!  Larsons are great doors.

Chuck – Steady progress!

Got to go

May God bless

Jim

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps near 60.  Sometimes it is the Tardis and sometimes it is Tardy.  Sorry about the mixups and non-pickups the other night guys.  Just goes to show even the best electronics are not enough if the driver (me) is not paying attention to the screen.  Extra zucchini bread and Old Mils as an apology offering.  Dennis, sorry to hear about the loss.

Speaking of losses, it is interesting how different families handle the grieving process.  Been to two funeral home visits lately.  One had a long line, but moved along fairly quickly.  The other one had a much shorter line, but seemed to drag on forever.  Ended up spending about the same amount of time at both places.  Not sure which approach is better for family.

Yes, Chief, I do have a friend from Brazil as well, but no, I do not know Portugese, but Sunday was a good day.

I do have a prayer request for a cousin of mine.  Very long story short, he has a colloidial cyst in his brain.  They will operate on Wednesday to remove it.  They had to drill a hole to get it to drain to relieve the pressure, which was affecting his memory.  It is located in the front of the brain.  Dennis would probably have a better explanation than I can provide, but it sounds serious.  Thanks in advance as always.  His wife has had it rough with this illness popping up and losing her dad at the same time.

Moving on to more mundane topics.  I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast as it rolled in from "Points East".  TBIL after "Lost".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cloudy 42 degrees. Going up to 60 today, with a little sunshine.

Today is a busy day. This morning, anyway. I have some chores to do and a little project to finish. Then, I will be free, this afternoon, to work on scenery, in the train room.

Physical Therapy went well, yesterday. I walked with a cane for a long distance. Felt good. A little achy today.

Dining car is here and the usual, for breakfast.  Then, it will depart for all " Points West ".

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Prayers for your friend's family, Dennis.

Bob - don't forget to take paper when you go to the facility!

Got a call this afternoon from my wife.  Our neighbor installed a new storm door on the weekend and wanted to know if we wanted their old one - heck yeah!  Got home, made dinner, then went next door and got the door and all the hardware too, and he helped me put it in the basement.  The screen is torn, but otherwise it's in good shape and the glass insert is very nice.  I think it's a Larson.  I remember when the first owner of that house put it in and he never scrimped on anything, so this is a good deal!

Tardis is ready, Mike, we'll pick up Pat first, then go back and get Jack from yesterday!  I guess the cloud cover fooled us, buddy!  Banilla sounds great, let's go!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Another quiet night collecting photons. The talk of a 3% salary cut is going around. We may not get our mechanic. I may be pulling double or triple duty for a while, but I'm thankful to have a job.

Dennis - sorry to hear about your friend in South America.

Jack - the radar in your area looked pretty fierce last night. Glad to hear you are still dry. Thoughts and prayers for you and your neighbors.

Watched the other half of a video on articulateds again before I went to bed. Beautiful stuff. Love the sections on the N&W and Rayoneir logging locomotives.

Sold a few of my pieces of radio and electronic equipment to some fellow boatanchor enthusiasts. Guess I'll be packing when I get back home.

Need to snowshoe off to the facilities.

Good evening everyone.  Was a nice afternoon.  Came home early after cases were done.  Spent a bit of quality time alone with bride and then we went and picked up daughter from school.  Wife had done some clothes shopping, so daughter loved coming home to try on new outfits.  Then got son and came home to do some chores.  Wife wanted me to TSP the kitchen cabinets and then I put some coats of paint on the walls there.  Will do another tomorrow.  The paint really does cover well, but we still want several coats so it can be washed well and kept clean.  I was amazed at how dirty the nooks and cranny's can get when they are in the out of the way places.  Maid never hit those well.

Finally done with all that and now it is  time for bed.  Have some big prayers to lift up.  One of the friends of a missionary that we are friends with in South America got assassinated yesterday.  I know it is a rough place, but that hits close to home.  Someone martyred for Christ... a true test of faith.  We still have it so well in this country.

God Bless,
Dennis

Buckeye, I would suggest you keep the I Love Ohio, car in quarantine, until a FULL detailed inspection is performed.  (The graffetti is the least concern, definetly will require an indepth disassembly, and inspection.)

The car has been disassembled and was clean as a whistle.  Thank you for the certificate.  I put it inside the rare and expensive "I Love Ohio" boxcar.  Who oiled the wheels and greased the couplers?  It sure works better now.

Good Evening All

Joints hurt today, maybe the dampness.

Just plain OLD AGE!!!! Whistling

Over ate.  Brought half of it home in a "doggie bag".  This guy over feeds us.  Meetings were OK except County Commissioners.  The County Manager [under the advice of the County Atty] had removed elective [now remember that word] abortions out of the health insurance contract.  The Dems on the Board cried foul.  Now it came out the Vice-Chair, who is a Dem, had agreed to have it under the consent agenda.  When it hit the floor, she changed her mind due to outside Dem pressure.  It was re-instated today with a vote of 4 to 3.  All by party lines.  This fight got crazy, out of order and went on forever.   Shame adults act the way they do.

Shake and Bake, he just does not want to admitt he got "gritted".

Sleep tight.

DougDG......all I need to do now is get a cell phone/texting/wireless internet jammer, turn it on, and then hide it in the house.  Then the daughter and SIL will have to contend with CWS....... "connected withdrawal syndrome," and have to muster some genuine human interface, like a conversation.

"OMG Jack.....your wireless router in your house and the cell phone tower outside the house are down!!!!!!  Call in Comcast, NASA, the cell phone company, the US Marines, and the A-Team.  McGyver too!!!!  We are under a technology attack!!!!!  This is a disaster of epoch proportions!!!!!" Shock Banged Head  "Gee, this is terrible!  I'll get right on it.  Go read to your child in the meantime." BTW......I think my SIL's Blue Tooth earpiece is epoxied onto his ear.

Jack and Dougdagrump ... we sure are lucky are'nt we with those beautiful grand-kids . They give us the true REAl love and I might say  the attention we need too . The lil 1 1/2 year old grand daughter knows who to ask for something to eat ... she always says .... " no I want pappy's " no matter what it is .... maybe the " treated like a princess " with all the service she gets influences it . I still have to turn down the

" want a taste pappy " when she gets her tootsie roll pop here ...all slobbered .... but she just wants to share .... LOL .

Jack ... caught some of the news on you folks up there ... sounds worse by what you're saying than they tell us .... nothing new for the news folks .... they seem to act like we want to hear too much about tiger woods than what's happening to our fellow citizens suffering .... I'm sick of hearing about that idiot and his affairs .  Be careful and safe buddy ... praying and hopeing all the best and safety for you all .

Papadiesel and all you other vets out there ... if they have'nt stopped it yet ... any honorable discharged vet can get reservations on the military bases at the guest lodging ... as of a couple years ago you could contact the base or your local recruiter and set up reservations .... kids and grand kids loved it ! Son took us all to Fort Bragg as he was 82nd Airborne and I took family to Norfolk naval base .... we and the kids got to eat in the mess halls and even toured a ship . The adults loved it too ! Excellent rooms and suites at an extremely low price . The active service guys treated the kids like royalty ... God bless them Angel ... gave them hats and stuff ... said they were their little brothers and sisters ... you could tell they missed home and family so much and it made their day too . Caught myself saluteing a couple times .... old habits are hard to break ... lol ... but the officers just smiled and saluted back .

Dennis....I have a DQ about 2 miles from my house.  After our Saturday night dinners at Grammy and Grampy's house the women, especially the granddaughter, have me making an ice cream run......year round.

OleTimer.....I can't get enough of the grandkids either.  Like Spanky with Tyler and Corey, I love to disappear with my granddaughter to play with her dollhouse and the trains, one on one.  SJ and JimSP hit the nail on the head with the parents and problems.....there is no replacement for a parent or a grandparent spending quality one on one time with them, away from the distractions of the "electronics' except for the trains, that is.  I listen to and play with my grandchild.  Lo and behold, she reciprocates because I don't tune her out, no matter how tired I may be.  When trains and/or the dollhouse are not on the agenda, reading to each other in another room away from the distractions and noise.  Also, when Grammy and Grammy ask for compliance, we ask once politely but firmly, then get up off our rear ends and make it happen.  Simple.  Clear.  No anger or frustration, no raised voces, just calm resolve.  If there is any resistance, then my grandduaghter gets a choice where one of the options is clearly not the way to go.  It seems children interpret their boundaries depending on who is  in charge.  It is too bad each of us makes these subtly permissive mistakes with our kids, and once we have the program figured out we are grandparents.  Better late than never.

The munchkin was here friday so he and grampa made some pudding, wasn't interested til he heard the magic word, "Chocolote". He enjoys being in the kitchen, the son-in-law enjoys cooking as I do so I guess he comes by it naturally.

Jack, Shouldn't be much longer before you guys can drag out the Ice Cream Maker and cook some up together, some of the newer ones seem to be much easier/better(?) than the older srtyles.

Looks as though our rain is about done for the year, gorgeous outside currently but the wind is just howelling today.

Laz, Great display case, but it appeared to be missing the sign w/a little hammer "In Case Of Emergency Break Glass". Smile

good afternoon everyone.  Jack, sounds worse every time I talk to folks from back up that way.  Did watch a little of it on news in the Dr's lounge and saw some areas where ice was flowing down the rivers.  They also had images of Wayne, NJ with it's flooding.  Glad we are down this way.  Hope you and your neighbors come out without too much trouble.  Hope some have generators as power is sure to be an issue with trees falling from wind and saturated ground...hate for sub-pumps to fail.

Chief, congrats on another great Grit raid...and you didn't even have to leave home.  I have some ideas for the next one, but will discuss privately.

Gotta run.
Dennis

PS: look at that, today is my anniversary here...5 yrs.  Lots of fun and companionship from some great people I call friends...thanks!

Rain and flooding update from NE Taxachusetts.

10' down here and 2" more expected before this stuff moves on by 11 tonight.  Road closures and evacuations continue.  Landslide has closed Route 1 in Topsfield MA about 7 miles northwest from here which as many of you know is Route1/ Route 95,  goes from Maine clear to Florida.

Laz......now you know what you can build for me for my birthday.  That display is beautiful and the first one I have seen that is lighted.  Nice choice of wood too, must have gotten pricey.  Shouldn't you be Laz 53?

Re the dog discussion, I concur.  Dogs are the best and teach us about unconditional love.  Loyalty.  And they never have a bad day, always happy and never dwelling on bad stuff.  JimSP.....I think a young housebroken miniature schnauser would be perfect, even if it needs a little training due to the previous owners' permissive tendencies.  They can live a long time too.  Pat.....I hear you,  about the pain of losing a trusted and loyal companion, and you have had 8!  We lost both of our dogs unexpectedly within 3 days of each other a year ago this past Thanksgiving.  The wife was depressed and distraught for quite some time over that.  Still sadly reminicses about each them.  Our new dog will make his mark in his own right.

Brutus.....who conducts the licensing test for piloting the Tardis?  You guys must have skipped me and New England last night.  I stood out in the rain next to my beacon for hours last night, and you boyz never showed.

John Baker.......good to hear from you from across the Pond.  Sending our rain your way.

Roy......glad to see you back.  prayers continue for your sis.

RaySP....you've reminded me I have to visit the eye doctor.

Chief.....you are looking pretty svelte and dapper in that pic, sucking in your gut.  But we know better.

Harold......my garage is a disaster too.  Son borrowed daughter and son-in-law's camping equipment, never returned it to them, and dumped it all in the garage when I was not looking.  It has to first be taken out, opened up, washed, and then dried out.

Papa......Disney with the daughter, SIL, and grandkids.  Beautiful.  Did you get to SeaWorld and see Shamu?

DougM....hope your cold passes quickly.  I'm wondering how my MIL and  FIL's sump pump is working out in your neck of the woods.  My wife talked to her mother last night, and if Noah's Ark pulled up to the curb they wouldn't mention it to each other.

Pat......I need about 400 head of very thirsty cows to drink and lower the pond level here.  You have to admit that outhouse has been well maintained.

NavyJack......any news on the layout front?
