Where to buy Lionel?
Posted by Deeker on Friday, January 1, 2010 12:45 AM

Hello- I am wondering where members here purchase their Lionel trains and accesories online.  I live 2 hours away from the nearest train shop, and therefor it is hard to get all the items I need, when I want them.  I have googled many times, but come up with many places that don't show much stock, or they have a poor site for viewing items.  Thank you for any help you can give.  Derek

Check out the latest copy of CTT and review the adds from the larger mailorder train shops. Go to their websites and see what the have to offer, both in new product and blowouts of previous products. A few of the big guys that should have plenty of product to choose from are.

Trainz.Com,  Charles Ro,  Grzyboski's Trains.  Train World & Trainland,  and Just Trains should take care of what you need.

Derek, welcome.  I've had mixed success with ebay.  Overall, I have been pleased with what I got & the price paid.  You have to be careful, though.  Don't be afraid to ask the seller questions &/or more photos of the item.  I find it best to set my highest bid by proxy & not worry about following the auction; if someone outbids be at the last second, so what?  It sold for more than I wanted to pay.  Some of the other on-line auctions also have some great items, but seem to be more expensive, to me.

If you have a good train shop two hours away, they might be a good source, too.  Unfortunately, good ones are 5 hours away from me, but I still check with them.  Check with the local? train store & see if they have some kind of mailing list you could get on for newly acquired items.

Also, have you tried trainz.com?

good luck,

Ive had alot of good luck with http://www.mariostrains.com/ . Good prices, had or has a special on free shipping. Has alot more in there store than what is listed online. http://www.wholesaletrains.com has very good prices but shipping is a mystery until youve already paid for the item. I sent a request to find out the cost of shipping and waited and waited with no reply. Got impatient and ordered it anyway and finally got a reply a week after my item had already got to me. Shipping was high too, i guess thats how they offset the low prices.

Usually Ebay .... 10's of thousands of items from the beginning of trains till now . Paypal totally protects you from scams or ripoffs . Just watch those idiots with blown up shipping fees .... read all the info ... especially shipping costs . I've found 99.99 % of the sellers are honest .... if not paypal refunds immediatly to you . I 've saved 100's - 1,000's of dollars  on Ebay . Trainz is on ebay ... plus they have their technitions check every engine completely before selling them .... and cars ..... they give a very reliable description of condition too .... on everything ... VERY RELIABLE seller .

Derek,

I purchase most of my new Lionel onlne from Charles Ro. I never had a problem and service is quick. I also deal with EBAY, both bidding and buying from EBAY stores and never had a problem. A tip is to bid with the brain not the heart.
