Williams N&W "J" Class
Posted by PhrozenAce on Thursday, December 24, 2009 10:46 AM

Happy Holidays Forum,

Does anyone have the Williams N&W J Class locomotive who can comment on it's smoke production?  I pulled up a couple of old posts about smoke units on the Williams engines, but saw nothing definitive or specific to the J Class.  I had planned to purchase one before the end of the year, but didn't want to end up disppointed because of a poor smoke unit.

Thanks,

Bernard

I don't have the 'J', but I have a Williams Berkshire.  I suspect the smoke units are identical.  The smoke output from my Berkshire was pathetic.  The smoke just drifted out in a barely visible stream.  There was no 'chugging' effect.  It only served to make the top of the engine wet and oily.  I don't use the smoke unit anymore.  Other then the smoke unit, it is a great engine.

Hi!! The smoke units in Williams engines are called Seuthe smoke generators and you have to use either Williams smoke fluid or SEUTHE smoke fluid to get good smoke output. I wouldn't put no more than 10-15 drops of smoke fluid instead of the recommended 20 drops because it will smoke much better to heat up the fluid and it will make a puffing effect and you will hear popping and crackling noises as the "boils" the fluid inside the small stem in the generator. My williams Hudson has great smoke output but the problem is that sometimes they puff smoke and other times they just put out a puny trail of, and also they blow smoke oil all over the top of the loco. Other than that Williams locomotives are fantastic runners, they only have a whistle and bell sounds, but you can upgrade the sounds if you like. If you are still interested try out a website called Ma & Pa Junction they sell the particular locomotive you are looking for for around 250 dollars and the original prices on them are around 400 dollars!! Hope this helps.
