2356 Southern ABA unit from Lionel
Posted by 2356 on Saturday, December 19, 2009 12:22 PM

I am new to the collecting model trains arena.  I recently purchased what I think is a early 50's model 2356 Southern RR ABA unit. Is there a way to verify that it is one of the original (50's era) engine sets and not one of the later years reproduction?

Thanks

I believe the 2356 is from 1956 or around there.  It is a nice ABA set.  I wish I had one.  I think you can tell if they are originals by looking at the lettering and numbering.  Does it have yellowed port hole lens??  Did you try opening it up to look at its motors??  Hope this help, Thanks.

I happen to have a set of those in my hands right now. Verify that the power unit has horizontal motors. The battery hole is in the non-powered A unit. the number boards in the nose have raised numbers Under the number boards on the nose are two "Louve" style vents molded into the body. Raised separately applied cab ladders. This should get you close.
