For Those Who Repaint - DECAL SALE (BNSF)
Posted by brianel027 on Monday, December 14, 2009 5:12 AM

As some of you might realize, decals are getting harder to find. Microscale is dropping many of their larger scale decals so it would be advisiable to get them while you can. For guys like me who repaint the smaller 027 kinds of cars, I can mix and match HO scale locomotive hearlds (which tend to be larger) with O or S scale dimensional data.

Oddall Decals is having a sale of 20% off everything and 50% off BNSF decals, so if you like the modern BNSF "swoosh" logo and like to repaint, now is the time to get these. They don't make all lines, but have a good spattering of things, especially BNSF, BN, ATSF and MO PAC, plus a lot of newer private road names.

Here's a link... read all the preface instructions first. Good luck and hope you can find something you may want or need.

And just for your info, here's a couple more links for O scale decals:

http://www.mgdecals.com/oscale.htm Nothing on sale here, but a good selection of some lines (esp. NE lines) not usually seen in 0 scale

http://www.railgraphicsdecals.com/Rail_Graphics_Decals_Generic_Data_Sets.htm These guys make great dimensional data sets which you can mix with heards and logos from other scales, which I have done.

Thanks guys.

I posted the info because one can often read comments about wanting to repaint something. And because I do so much of it, I can tell you the selection of decals in 0 scale has gotten much smaller over the years.... trust me, I know.

Here's another link for another good source of N&W, Southern and NS related decals, including some made in 0 scale.

And here's a list I work from where I have located some of the companies I've done business with. Unfortunately, much is HO, but you have to poke around through the list and you may find what you are looking for.

What do you repaint?

The least expensive freight cars?

That would exactly correct Andrew. As MARX showed us years ago, even a simple train car can have loads of "suggested" detail via some good lithography. Hey, just because I'm a budget 027 guy, doesn't mean I can't be a highrailer or not be interested in current modern road names. These are old photos but illustrate the point.

Conrail had exactly ONE single blue box car, which has been over represented by the train companies. Brown, tuscan and even PC green were far more numerous. These were all Microscale Decals.

Next, a few in a big series of MPC short flats, all repainted, and all modified to accept a bunch of universal load carriers I've made, which are easily switched from one car to another.

Next, a modified K-Line S-2 in Norfolk Southern with a post merger PC/CR box.

Last, this was my concept of "what if" the Penn Central hadn't been quite so cash strapped. Again, Microscale decals.

I finally got a digital camera and when I figure out how to use it, I'll have some more recent photos of many more repaints, custom rebuilds and kitbashed items.

That Norfolk Southern Flat Car with Coils looks great.

The PC Cars and Locos look factory fresh in the photos.

What I would paint to look better are the Lionel CSX and UNION PACIFIC  Thrall Car Centerbeam I-Beam Flatcars that were not painted, but had some stamped lettering. That stamped lettering would have to be removed before they are painted and decaled to look more realistic like the UP Centerbeams of the 1970's and the CSX I-Beam Flatcars of the 1980's.

In the new J C Penney O Gauge Santa Fe train set there is an O Gauge BNSF Gondola painted just like a post-2005 BNSF Bathtub Coal Gondola with Dual Rotary Couplers. So Lionel kind of has the point of what some of the O Gauge operators want to buy, but they have a strange way of packaging it in a Steam Set.

Now the only decals at Oddball Decals that interest me are ones that can be applied to Undecorated Weaver Models PS-2-CD 3-Bay Grain Hoppers that have been painted BNSF Bright Cascade Green.

What other BNSF decals that I like are the Green, Blue & White Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Circle Cross logos for Intermodal Trailers and Containers.

On January 8th, 2009 there was an announcement of new Industrial Rail releases to be ordered.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway BNSF Gondola among the cars being offered.

This means that there is one less car to decal.

Still no BNSF Open-Top Hoppers or Covered Hoppers mass produced for the Traditional O Gauge market. If not announced soon it will be another year to be released.

Wow, thanks Andrew for posting that... I'll check the Industrial Rail website. Nice to see at least a few traditionally sized trains being made with current roads.

Ironically when you posted the bit about the Lionel BNSF gondola in the JC Penny set, I'd just gotten one of those. Yeah, wrong scheme for a gondola but I still like the car and was ahppy to see Lionel had made that one. I got lucky to get just the gondola, which is the only car I would have wanted, and not the whole set.

Another PS: thanks for your video link. I can see you like the rail lines you often talk about. I enjoyed watching the real train videos... they just weren't long enough! The sounds of a train rolling along is music to my ears.

I guess that's one of the reasons I don't get all hyped up over sounds in toy trains. As good as some of the train makers try to get it, there's no way in my mind to re-create the sounds of those horns blasting, the rumble of the wheels on the rails and all the air hose sounds in a model train. Whwen I run my own trains, I guess I prefer to let my imagination fill in all those great sounds.

Thanks again for the IR update. The new steel reefers look nice and good to see a couple of modern types of paint schemes on the tank cars. Plus the BNSF and CSX gons.

Now if we can get them to watch your videos and make one of those CN box cars with the web address below the logo. Talk about modern and up to date. I think that'd be a cool traditionally sized box car for either IR, Lionel or K-Line by Lionel.

Brian,

Lionel did just make the O Scale Bathtub Gondolas in the current BNSF graphics, so they just reused them for the O Gauge Gondola. That means that there could be some BNSF O Gauge Maxi-Stacks coming if enough people asked for them.

There were a few longer videos that I attempted to upload to YouTube, but for some reason the upload time increased to an impossibly long time through the Alltel/Verizon cellular phone service. Also sometimes there were signal dropouts.

The Two-Bay Open-Top Hoppers from Lionel, K-Line, Industrial Rail have not been factory painted for BNSF in either the Oxide Red scheme or theTrinity RailCar Rapid-Discharge  Aluminum Body scheme.

Lionel did make O gauge BNSF maxi-stack intermodal cars in 2014.

Oddball Decals might be having production problems.
