AC Adapter v/s transformer
Posted by lancaster on Friday, October 30, 2009 7:40 PM

Just purchased a Mr Christmas Star Ship ride accessory.  It uses an AC Adapter: Input of 120V AC, 60 Hz, 0.15A,  Output of 6V DC, 800mA.

Question:  Can I remove the adapter and connect this accessory to a DC transformer set for 6V ??

I assume that you mean a DC power supply, not transformer.

Probably.  Be sure that you are not dealing with a supply constructed as a fixed transformer, rectifier, and rheostat, which is a traditional way of powering HO trains.  The problem is that the output voltage will be very poorly regulated.  You need something that puts out 6 volts no matter what the load is (up to its rating).

Also watch out for the polarity of the voltage.  The DC plugs used with those adapters are commonly wired with either polarity.  You need to match the polarity of your adapter.
