Greetings Folks,

While my major focus of collecting recently has been Pre War American Flyer Trains; I also have a collection of Gilbert American Flyer S gauge trains.  I thought I would share some photos of my S gauge trains and layout.  Remember, after the war Gilbert's emphasis was on realism and more scale looking trains.

In S gauge I like the realism of  both their steam engines and diesels

Although, I have to admit that the steamers are truely my favorites.

I like to lay my head down close to the track and get a good look at the detail on the engines.  Notice the "real two rail track" that Gilbert switched to after the war.

Gilbert American Flyer started out with link and pin couplers after the war, but switched to knuckle couplers in 1954; just another attempt to improve the realism of their trains.

I use a lot of Scenic Accents figures from Woodland Scenics.  I swear that sometimes I can almost see those figures breath, and they enhance the realistic look of a layout.

I've worked pretty hard to keep the level of my scenery up to the caliber of the other expert modelers who post here, and that matches the realism of Flyer's S gauge trains.  Here are some shots along the right of way on my layout.

This picure made me think of Flyer's advertising:  "Real two rail track, puffs clean white smoke, realistic chugging sounds"

I think I need a few vintage vehicles for my layout; maybe vintage 1950's

I hope you like my layout.  Wink

OK so I fibbed a bit.  The pictures are actually of the 2719 on an excursion run along the North Shore Scenic Railway out of Duluth.  The tourist line is based at the Lake Superior Transportation Museum in the old Depot. We are here visiting my son and in-laws this weekend.  This is the last weekend for running steam for the season, although there are plenty of other runs scheduled through the rest of the fall and winter.  My son and I chased the excursion for a part of the run and snapped the photos.  I thought you might enjoy them.

Today my son and I will be riding this excursion train on the Lake Superior and Mississippi (LS&M), which also runs out of Duluth.

The really exciting thing about this run is that my son is the engineer.

Enjoying the World's Greatest Hobby (in so many ways).

I am very pleased to announce we had another visitor from the CTT Car Exchange arrive recently.  It was the Ann Arbor participant from the local line located in Michigan.  The unique car came from Kurt's pike.  Given the economic conditions across the country this car was on a trek headed for the west coast, and assisting those whom had fallen from economic stability to a life of distress and looking for a way of gaining better control of their life.

Even thou the intentions were well placed, once the car had arrived in California, the local politicians determined that it was best if the car and its collection of "misfits" would be isolated on a remote siding.  (The persons that had gathered were only guilty of not making adequate political contributions to the local liberal party.)  The siding selected was not considered with a great deal of prudence or safety in mind.  It was located adjacent to a Fireworks stand as well as an Operating Oil well.  The vagabonds were naturally trying to preserve some basic amenities, and built a campfire while being detained on the siding.

Unfortunately, the campfire began to grow.  As it was the seasonal humidity and temperatures were at the peak of the "Red Flag" warning stage.  The Fire hazard was at the greatest.  The campfire was rapidly growing out of control.

Being somewhat unaware of the severity of the potential condition, the men initially did not seem overly concerned.  And the situation quickly grew out of hand.

The situation changed rapidly, the local fire crew was brought in, but the Fire grew rapidly, and expanded to the adjoining hillside.  The flames took on a personality of their own and became known as the "Station Fire".  Of course the car from Michigan had sustained some serious damage.  The "passengers" had all been removed from the scene without any harm.

After about 3 weeks of intensive work, and assistance from most of the neighboring states the fire is almost contained.  The "clean-up" process was begun and it was determined that the car from Michigan would be returned with-out any effort of repair.  (Remember, the state is broke.)  The car was loaded up on a depressed flat car for the return trip.

Fortunately, the car was not totally destroyed and had sustained only significant damage to ONE side, the car was successfully loaded and transported to the Classification Yard where a special double headed consist was to be put together for the return trip.

As with most items Kurt's car had received some "tagging" when it was being transported through the local community.  But, that didn't matter much considering the overall condition of the car.

The tagging was masked, and the consist was completed for the departure of the "Not so Pretty Car", but given the Rarity of the car it was expedited for immediate departure.

On the positive side, I'm sure Kurt will be pleased to know that he still has a "Shelf Side" available for the Ann Arbor box car.  I guess it all goes with trials and tribulations associated with long distance humanitary efforts.

Picture all the adults standing on the curb waiting for this one to arrive daily! Talk about a reason for neighbors to get to know one another! Hmmm...wonder what the village comissioners would have to say about this!Confused Guess we better ask the Chief!

 Chuck,

I don't think any other comment is necessary.  I don't want to see the pictures of other guys zapped, because of this.  I am going back to edit and remove the image I copied and posted.

Carumba. I see the moderators deleted my photos of layout building from the Sunday Photo Thread. Is this a new policy that you don't want photos of train layouts? If that's the case, maybe someone from CTT can give an answer regarding what type of photos does CTT want? I'll put up a few more backdrop building photos just too make sure CTT doesn't want any more layout photos.

Ask the Chief

Kurt

You don't need to ask the Chief,

I saw Frank53's original post with the photos, then his signature "Thread Killer", and immediately thought how petty that was!  Only to have my suspcions validated on the other forum.  Hence, I posted the post on Page 1, why would anyone do that?  So Chuck responds, Check out the other forum, Don.  Frank comes back How would you like this one?   And the says Don your stiring the pot.  Hey, simple I went back and simply Reported Abuse on Franks original thread.  And deleted the Thread Killer image from my thread.

Below is the complaint I submitted;

"When someone blatenly disregards the efforts of many others, for some subtle agenda, it shouldn't be tolerated indefinitly.  I cannot understand what benefit one would see in posting something like "Thread Killer" in a thread of this nature.  I admit I responded to this thread and included the image and asking Why would anyone want to post something like that.  Then if you would look on the MTJ forum "OGR Crapper" pgs 277, 278, (current postings).  The same individual BRAGS about it.  Then goes on and refers to everyone else as doofus's, etc...   Then proceeds to carry on a campaign against one of the primary leaders of the CTT forum.
AND THEN, comes back over here and starts saying I was stirring the pot !!!  This is ridiculous.

Now YOU know the rest of the story!  I'm sure this will probably result in 2 things ---

- Certainly will be an interesting "spin" on the other forum !!

- Will result in this thread being locked, which is unfortunate.  For that I appologize, to the other contributors.  A couple of the last comments were nothing more than direct reaction "from" the other forum, and totally misguided.

Don,   I agree with you 100%.

I don't quite understand why someone would post on CTT Forum and then talk disrespectfully about us on another Forum.  Especially, when we always complimented them on their layout pictures.

I expect the Staff will deal with this situation,  soon.

Sticking to the photos on their own merit, I think Frank's layout is just wonderful and the pics being here are a contribution to the forum. What a great layout! Traditional postwar trains and tubular track no less, and still his layout is equal to other layouts I have seen with far more scale proportioned "prototypical" trains and track. It's really an inspiration.

This is the kind of layout with the kinds of trains I'd love to see more of in the pages of CTT. And I suspect many others would too. I also like what David Smith has done on his layout, which was recently in CTT... that transfer table and moving crane were really neat. And again, on a layout with tubular track and 027/traditional trains.

I know the magaine wants to promote the latest trends and products in the magazine. But for me, I find far more artistry and inspiration in the like of Frank's layout than some of the others that have been featured in the magazine.

As far as the "thread killer" graphic, well, I took it as a joke. But I know from my own experience sometimes "in" jokes can offend those who are not on the "in." I'm not on the "in" but I still laughed. And for me, it didn't take away from the wonderful photos of a truly impressive layout.

PS: lots of nice pics here folks. Blueberryhill RR: is that your own repaint on the CNJ caboose? Never seen that one before.

And Bill T: those containers on the LOTS Radioactive Waste car are the nicest ones I've ever seen on a Lionel car. Those containers really make that car look good.

Yep, have to agree, as usual, LOTS did a great job in designing the graphics. LOTS really puts out some terrific convention cars, their upcoming Chattanooga Aquarium Car may be the best yet.

Chuck: In my thread about JC colors I mentioned that I was unable to find a tangerine/blue caboose or boxcar. Have you seen any? Only JC cabooses I have seen are in "Red Baron" red, what appears to be brunswick green, and "caboose" red.
