 Good afternoon everyone,

Great Pictures everyone.

Paul, I assume that they are real spikes in the track cleaning cars, correct?

Well, about two weeks ago a track maintenance car arrived on the interchange track from the Sodor Island Railways (Doug Murphy).  I have been keeping it busy doing maintenance on the catenary while it is here.  Now that we are finished with it, we will be sending it down South a bit next week.

A Yarn for the End of Summer

It had been the topic of conversation and speculation among the Old Guys down at the coffee shop for quite a few days.  It seems that there had been a rumor going around that the owner of Wausau Widgets, Nils Jameson, ordered something big from back east. No one knew for sure what it was, but there were all kinds of opinions and theories.  Jameson is a fellow who is known to have some interesting ideas and theories about business, and life. Nor did anyone know how the rumors got started, but some of the Old Guys had questioned the station agent about anything big coming in by train.  He was very discreet about the whole thing and wouldn't say a word to discount or confirm the rumors.  One of the clerks on the other hand wasn't quite so careful.  He let it slip to his wife, who told her sister, who told her hair dresser, who told the sister-in-law of one of the Old Guys that there was a special shipment coming in for Jameson late in the week.  It was from some place in the Mid Atlantic region and was from a company named Ornitho-Fifeus.

Folks kept an eye on the inbound freight each morning to see if there was anything unusual.  On Thursday morning the party line phone at the coffee shop jangled away.  One of the regulars who lived south of town had stayed home and had seen the train coming... and it had an extra box car.  Before you know it there was a regular parade of folks headed for the station to see what Jameson might have ordered.

Right on schedule the daily freight pulled in to town.

It looked the same as usual except it had that one extra box car.

You should have heard the chattering among the folks gathered near the station.  That first box car looked pretty normal.

And when the door was opened the contents looked pretty normal.  There were boxes for the local merchants, and Mrs. Connor's hutch from Sears and Roebuck had finally arrived.

There was a disappointed murmer that went through the knots of people gathered nearby.  Their attention turned to that second box car.  It too looked rather normal.

A couple of the clerks slid the door open.

It was dark inside, but those closest could hear what sounded like scratching and suddenly in the doorway appeared....

An enormous pink bird.  An audible gasp went up from the crowd. "Great Ceasar's Ghost! Its a flamingo!" someone shouted.  And suddenly another one appeared.

And then another, and then another until there were 4 of them.

The folks who were gathered around stood in awed silence.

Just at this moment Mabel Tunseth arrived.  Mabel had been sitting under the hair dryer at the beauty parlor when the party line had come alive with news of the extra box car and she had missed hearing what all the excitement was about.  She had wondered why everyone had left in such a hurry and when her hair was finally done she too had hurried down to the station.  As Mabel rounded the corner of the station she spied the four huge pink birds and being an excitable sort of person she let out a blood curdling scream.   The crowds turned to look at her and all four birds took to the air.

A couple of them took to the roof of the freight station.

One of them settled on the roof of the caboose.

And the fourth one disappeared.

For the next hour poor Capt. Murphy of the Wausau PD was fielding phone calls about sightings of a large pink bird being sighted all over town.

Some one saw it on the railroad bridge.

It was spotted on the clock tower of the school.

And then it appeared downtown.

Eventually the station agent, the clerks and a few volunteers managed to recapture the birds.  Nils Jameson was notified that he had several large parcels waiting for him at the station.  One of the Old Guys poked his head into the box car and discovered.....

two huge pink eggs.

Shortly after Jameson arrived he explained what was going on.

He had read in Modern Philanthropy about the work being done by the company Ornitho-Fifeus in cross breeding Flamingos, Turkeys and Ostriches.  He had visions of developing a flock and selling the huge drumsticks at the State Fair and marketing the eggs to restaurants so that they didn't have to break so many eggs for their morning rush.  He had ordered two breeding pairs from Mr. Fife of the firm, but he had not expected the birds to be so large nor to cause such a sensation.   Once again Nils Jameson had earned his reputation for being unconventional.

Things have almost settled down again here in town, but you should hear the conversations going on down at the coffee shop now.

Yes John, they are real spikes I found locally, I just ran them under a wire wheel to clean them up.  Because the track cleaning car pads are spring loaded the wieght is needed to keep the trucks on the track.

And John, I really like your track crew, thats a great scene!!

I've been a member of this Forum since 2005, this is one of the BEST SPF editions I can recall!  It is complete with nostaglia, scenery, excellent photos, a fantastic story line.  Occasionally, I get the courage to post some photos and then I see some work that a lot of you guys have done, and my images don't belong in the same thread.  Maybe we need another thread???  "Photo Fun Wantabees?"  Anyway, great job!!!!!  Very impressive!!!

Tom, I've seen A LOT of pictures of your layout, but I'm never bored!  The different "themes" you create with your layout, makes it seem like you layout would fill 3 or 4 buildings.  (Maybe it does)

Raymans,  The scenes you have put together are as good as in ANY of the magazines.  Truly impressive!!  (and envious!!)

. Bill T  Realy like your layout and city space utilization.  All you need is a few trees,  and your there!  (You sure are way ahead of me!  I may have to pull up all my "grass carpet", LOL)

Paul,  Now you "Say" you've been working on Scenery,  realistically, did you photo shop the "third" rail into a existing photo?  Man !! Do you ever do good work!   Wow!!!  Please post more!!!  (What is orange superstructure in the background?  Bridge? Crane?

Laz,  Good job on the oil can set !  Like them logs too !

John,  You did a great job on the photography, those guys look like they are talking!  Can practically hear them.   Also, the pictures really show the cantanary well.  (Since I've seen your layout, I know that the maintenance car is only doing a routine inspection.)  The camera  work is great!!

Northwoods,  The story line is FANTASTIC !!!!!  Great Job !!  This is definetly one of the highlights of the thread.  You had to have hours invested in this thread.  I think I have read it 3 times already.  Where did you find "scale" flamingos?  The vintage cars and accys are fantastic.  Great Post !!

Thank you Don for the kind words, I am a LONG way from finished and doing scenery is allot more fun that I thought it would be.  It is just very time consuming, I spend hours on one area then look at the clock and say I can't believe this is all I've done!   The orange super structure is just a pair of Lionel floodlight towers for the adjacent yard, here are a couple of older shots that show the area better.  Post some shots of your layout, I would love to see them. Smile

Hi Don, thank you, the layout is taking shape. That section is 8 x 22, two more similar section to work on this winter. Trees are in the process of being planted, the forest service is working diligently on the project.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.  And thanks to you Don.  I've always enjoyed the stories that you weave too.  As someone who has done the same thing you know the fun that it is.

The flamingos are from Dept 56.  They have a whole line of things to accompany a building that they have called the Flamingo Motel.

Great pictures this week everyone.

Great job guys.

New MoPac big EAGLE comes to Roseyville.

The MoPac is pulling a steep mountain grade with grain train from Ioway.  Notice the smoke as engine strains to pull the grade.

She hits flat lands and things are better for a short distance.

Next mountain required NS to cut in an engine to help with the grade.  The train meets a long mixed train going into tunnel and down the grade.  4 engines on that long train.

Trains pass on.

New NS Dash 9 that just joined the Roseyville roster. [Thanks to LAZ]
