Repairing a 6466W wissle
Posted by Cacau on Saturday, September 5, 2009 2:01 PM

Hi, the tender of my 2036 (6466w) only wissle at high speeds. I took it apart, and noticed that the problem seems to be the relay. It takes a higher voltage to activate it. It's sensitivity is not good.

I don't want to pay collector prices to replace it with a  vintage relay. Is there a modern relay I can use?

I just searched Ebay for "Lionel whistle relay" and got 5 hits at $7 and one buy-it-now at $10.  I suspect any electronic substitute will cost you as much or more.  It's not an ordinary relay; so I don't think you'll find an electromechanical replacement.
