How do you do a tune up on the 400 and 404 budd cars?? I have them both and would like them to run like new or close to it. I have just cleaned up the insides, but have not replaced the brushes or springs or any even taken the motors or e-units apart to clean and lube and what not. And how do you get them dang horns to work?? They work, but not when i push the button for whistle. they kinda like grind and sputter. They wanna work, but no good electrical connection i think. What else should i clean on them or lube or oil?? thanks.
Well, i opened up the motors. The brushes need replaced, so i did that and cleaned the communtators. They were dirty as well. Got the horn to work on the 400 and I will do the 404 tomorrow. Just forgot to put a battery in to make it work. All works great with the 400. Shell is very clean and good.
Glad to hear your 400 Budd isd coming back to life. I've had my three car set since new, and they still run fine, I think, though I don't run them often. I'm looking forward to dedicating some future section of layout to them - sort of a commuter run - they have such nicely detailed near scale bodies, and they run well too!

Yeah, I am done now with them. Both motors are cleaned and lubed and oiled. The horns work just fine. They sound good when they both are activated. Sounds like real subway cars. Had them running for a few minutes and are just fine. Will have them on my new elevated section loop on my layout for christmas this year. Only 4 months til i set it all up again for xmas, actually 5 months. I dont set it up until mid october. During the York show weekend i usually set it up. I will have more signals and crossing gates and lights in the houses and 71 lamp posts everywhere. I hope my 6 transformers can handle everything. Thanks.
