1122 switch problems
Posted by Civil War on Sunday, April 12, 2009 7:49 PM

I seem to be having some problems with my 1122 switches. When a car goes through the switch the wheels spark and the switch buzzes. The instructions for the switch do not mention fibre pins like the 022 switches do. Should there be fibre pins, and what rail should get them?

Also when my automatic Milk Car goes through a switch backwards it catches and derails. I think it is catching on the operating shoe. Is there a fix for that? I need to be able to back a train into a switch track without it derailing every time.  I am trying to work out the bugs before I start the scenery.

I appreciate any suggestions and advise you have. I am very new at this but am learning a lot from reading the posts on this forum.

 Thank you all.

The sparking and buzzing is normal.  It is the non-derailing feature doing its thing.  If you don't have insulating pins in there now and it works, you must have the early, 1952, model.  After that year you would have needed two insulating pins in the rails that touch the frog.  See if the two outermost rails are not each divided into three segments.  The later 1122(E) model has no breaks in those rails.

Thanks, I checked my switches and they are all the 1952 type with the three breakes. Now it is on to the problem with that darn milk car sticking. I am sure it is the operating shoe that is doing it. Is there a way to adjust it up out of the way and still have it work at the platform?

Also with the switches, what is the proper way to lubricate the moving part. A couple of them are slow and kind of sticking.

Thanks

If a train comes to a stop so that a wheel set is on the 1122 switch completing the circuit and the switch machine is buzzing (which means the solenoid is energized), can you burn out the solenoid, in a relatively short time? I believe this is possibile with the NJ International dual solenoid switch machines that have been used with the Gargraves switches in years back, and wonder if that is possible here as well? The solutioin on the NJI units is to use the auxilliary contacts wired in a way to open the circuit when the turnout is thrown to the desired postition. (this also "sets up" the circuit for the opposite "throw" the next time the operator throws the switch control lever, or a train comes through and grounds the other solenoid, activating the non-derail scheme; In no case does the circuit remain closed for the postiion in which the turnout is currently. Lionel's Ogauge 022 switches are designed so that this protection is there as well. The 027 switcvhes were not).
