Removal of Polar Express Tender Wheels
Posted by dwiemer on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 4:53 PM

Doing a repair for a friend's tender.  Have to replace the plunger for the coupler and inso doing, have to remove the rear wheel set.  This is the type that have a plastic insert between the axles and the truck side.  Looks like it can slide down, but want to make sure before trying to pry/break.  Does anyone have any pointers to doing this?

Thanks,
Dennis

Figured it out.  What you have to do is remove the tender shell.  Then, remove the whole truck (don't have to remove the wires as there is enough play in them).   Then, with a small flat blade screw driver, you can slightly pry the small plastic piece towards the center.  It simply pops out and then you can carefully remove the wheelset.  Just have to be careful of the common copper slide that goes over the axle as the wheel needs to slip past it.  Once complete, just reverse to assemble.

Thanks,
Dennis

See all that schooling did pay off just a different type of operation Whistling figured if you looked long enough you would come up with an answer glad it worked out fine.

I looked on Lionel website for a diagram of it to see if I could see what you were talking about but they didn't have one
