O/O27 Layout plans for 6'x8'
Posted by bbst on Sunday, February 1, 2009 6:38 PM

I have a problem finding any plans for a O/027 layout plans for this small of a layout. Most of the layouts are 4'x8' or they are the much larger ones that are in basements. I live in Houston, Texas so basements are not an option here, and I don't have a spare room for the layout. My plans are to build a 6'x8' and use a pully system to pull it up to the ceiling in my garage. I want to be able to run 2 trains at once a build it around a 1960's suburban neighorhood using 10 vintage plasticville structures I have. If anyone knows of a good book or website please let me know. Thanks!

This is a good site. You can always expand a 4 by 8 to 6 by 8 Just use more straight. I have a simple double loop with a 45 degree crossing. I have a trestle oval hovering over it. Simple but effective.

My layout is 7.5 x 6.5, and would work fine on a 8x6.  can run 2 trains at one time, and it has a single parking siding, plus enough open area for your buildings and roads.  It also incorporates a 45 degree crossing so it doesn't look like I just have two circles going around the table.  The outer loop is all 0-54, with 0-31 and 0-42 mixed curves on the inner loop.  It's connected by 2 LH 0-42 switches.  I isolated the inner and outer loops.  You can probably find enough pictures in the SPF post to map out my track design, but I'll post it for you when I get home.  All 4 corners are open, so you could easily put the eyehooks for your hoist system in the corner for maximum stability.

bbst:  I second Dub's suggestion on the Thor site!  I modified one of their plans here at home.  Look into the 4x8 layouts, and stretch them out.  You can create city scenes in the center with sidings leading into it.  Maybe incorporate a central loop trolley line that crosses the siding tracks.

Keep us posted on the progress!

I reworked the layout as I remember it modified for a 6x8, but I'm using MTH realtrax.  It could be reworked for O27 too.

Wes......that inner loop looks like it would make for some interesting operating sessions and compliment the outer one quite well as it is not a standard loop.  Interesting.  Is that and underpass on that inner loop or a crossover?

Sorry for the delay jack, just getting in here tonight.  It's a 45 crossing.  Everything is one simple layer. After looking at it, I would probably try to move the top turnouts to the left off of the inner left curve so it a more pleasing loop. That's the thing about track software, you are alway's tweaking.

I recommend going to Kinkos or a place with an expensive copy machine and enlarging the photo of a track plan you like.

This is a 7.5x6.5, so not quite your size requirements.  It also uses 0-54 curves on the outer loop.

Here is my 5' x 9' 027 layout.  You could modify it into a 6' x 8'.  The inner loop goes up over and under.
