Lava Lite Tank Car ?
Posted by BigJim on Saturday, January 31, 2009 6:11 PM

Here's a question for the Lionel experts;

Why was it that the Lava Lite Tank Car was never made? The 70's in me really wanted one of them.

Your average Lava Lamp was powered by a 120 volt bulb. Your 18 volt bulb will not generate the heat necessary to get the intenal convection current flowing. If you remember they didn't start right away but needed to warm up. I guess you will have to satisfied with the aquarium car.

The lava lite also uses the convection currents for animation and that does better in a vertical mode.  There really isn't much vertical clearance on a tank car.  They did release some rheoscopic fluid tank cars that were interesting, I was always partial to the green radioactive waste car.
