I just picked up a MTH Standard Gauge Steamer LVRR set.
Very nice. I think the Standard Gauge bug has bitten.
Any options on a 4 by 8? Any photos or plans appreciated.
Love this size. Dictates limited layout though.

First of all, you have made a wise decision in selecting standard gauge. While it is expensive, it is very reliable and will save you hours of frustration compared to even O-gauge. As far as a 4x8 is concerned, you are limited to a basic oval with some sidings. I do not think even a figure 8 is possible without some track overhang. You can have one or two passing sidings, but they will be short. A simple circle is 42" and each regular straight is 14". A half straight is 8", roughly so you could have an oval with three straights and one half with the curves. Possibly you could tweak a little more running room by sticking a half section of straight in the curves to make an angle, but that is problematic at best. Also, you really do not want to have the trains running that close to the edge. I hope this helps.
