I am having a problem with my girls christmas train engine. It is a lionel O guage B&O railroad steam type engine with a sound producing coal car. It is about 3 years old. Up until now it has worked without a hitch. Today it stopped going forward. It goes in reverse fine but starts going forward for about 10 inches and then stops and makes a humming sound.
Anybody out there who might know what is going on or have a fix. Thanks in advance.
Sounds like the "E" unit is cycling. Not sure what unit you have. Can you give us more information on the engine? I would first check to make sure the pickup rollers and wheels/track are clean. Also, make sure you don't have any loose wires. If the train loses power temporarily, it will make the e-unit cycle. Of course, it could also be the actual e-unit, but i'd check the simple fixes first. Dennis

Oh boy what you have is hard to fix without seeing it. if it's 3yrs old and a starter set that would make it a DC motor so it should run both ways equal. Check the engine closely for lint or tinsel, anything that may have gotten into the gears or axles. After that Its most likely motor or reverse unit.
EDIT- what Dennis mentioned about dirty track is also true, but I'm not sure why it would run one way and not the other if the track is dirty. But it could cause your problem.

The train is a model 6-28615. It looks like the electric motor is a CB7Y. I am not sure if I should do this, but if take the locomotive top off and spin the end of the electric motor clockwise by hand, the wheels will go in reverse. If I spin it by hand counter clockwise the wheels will not turn in either direction.
That sounds like a burr on a gear or a bad gear somewhere to me.

Thanks for all the input. If it is a gear or a burr, is it repairable by a novice?. I can definitely not roll the wheels forward by hand and I did not want to try to forced them so I don't know if that confirms the gear issue or not.

I see you are in Columbia. I am in Augusta. Can you tell me if there is a good repariman in the area. I have this problem and several old engines that have not run in years that I would like to have looked at and fixed if possible. Thanks.
Sent you an email and it depends which gear it is if its the one on the motor you need a tiny gear puller if its one of the others you remove motor and the rest basicly will come off I believe( except the one on the wheels them self but from what I've been told its rare for one of them to mess up. ) . I know there is a hobby shop here but never been there but do know they supply all scales.
