How do i replace side rods on a 1689e loco

Hello folks

Im restoring a 1689e and i dont know how to replace the side rods. They appear to be riveted on. Do I just drill out the rivets? I have never used a rivet gun so any suggestions on how to use one to put the new ones on would be really appreciated.

Thanks for any assistance you may offer.

Old rivets will have to be drilled out.  This is a replacement tool set meant for rivetting parts for O/S gauge trains:

There are other ways to peen the repacement rivet.  This is just easier/neater.

When everything else fails, play dead
