Williams GG1
Posted by asch on Sunday, August 17, 2008 11:01 AM

Once again I come to the Great Train Information Gods on this forum with a problem to solve....

I have a Williams GG1 that I need to set for Forward only running, not wanting to have a neutral set or a reverse set. I need this for the dected loop that it will run on where it will automaticly start and stop. How do I set it for this running. There is no switch on the loco and I even took the cab off to take a look inside but cannot find a way to set it. HELP ME PLEASE OH GREAT TRAIN GODS!!!!

If it has a can motor or motors, you can bypass the reversing unit and power the motor(s) through a bridge rectifier.  If there's any horn, smoke, etc., connected to the present reversing unit, you should be able to leave it in place (with only the motor connection severed).

Asch:

I assume you're referring to the 14" GG-1 from Williams rather than the scale-size GG-1.

I have one of these engines as well (recent production, one of the last batch built before the sale of Williams to Bachmann) and it doesn't have a lock-out switch either.

The electronic reverse will always start up in forward after being powered down, so assuming that you were going to have the power cut-off to stop the GG-1 in the first place, you should be OK.

BTW - the repro GG-1 is a great engine, runs very smooth after break-in.  The only feedback I've heard about the engine is that the frame of the pilot trucks at either end is very low and can sometimes trigger a momentary short when going over an uncoupling track.

Good luck!

Asch,

Check out the link below. Note the caution about voiding the warranty; and also about "Revision 4" boards (only) with no info as to how to distinguish those board from other versions. at series from others.

Other than that, it should supply any that you may not have have already received from this forum....

The same FAQ section at the Bachmann (Williams by Bachmann) website shows how to change their locos to start in Neutral instead of Forward after sitting for a few seconds.

If 'twere me, I'd contact Bachmann and ask for confirmation/clarification.

Good luck. I't probably quite easy.
