ball bearing for lionel #60 trolley in brush plate

What is the purpose of the small ball bearing in the bush plate for the shaft in the armature?

"Greensberg" says in it important in the gang car diagram but not much information about.  What size is it and will it keep a trolley motor from not working? Needless to say I have a trolley motor that won't run. No shorts in the electrical system and all wires are in place and new bushes and springs.  Everything was degreased and relubricated.   Thanks

The bearing ball in a #60 Trolley acts as a "Thrust" bearing and provides a spacing limit to keep the armature plates aligned with the field plates.  It also maintains the space between the armature contact plate and the brushes.

When the Trolley is moving in one direction the force on the spur drive gear pushes the armature "up" against the ball.   The ball is .109 inches in diameter.  Likely, any ball close will serve, as long as it fits in the shaft hole.

The trolley should run, or at least try, without the ball, so its absense is not likely your problem.

Is the light on?  If not, check the contacts on the reversing mechanism.  With an AC volt meter, check for voltage at the armature, field, and reversing contacts, then check wiring accordingly.  Most likely problem is the reversing contacts.
