6 x 12 Layout Plan
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 7, 2008 6:43 PM

I'm looking to build my first O-scale layout and need a few ideas on functional plans for a 6 x 12 foot layout. I could also add a 2 x 4 L-shaped extension if required for a rail yard, etc. The 5 x 10 layout in the February 2008 issue of CTT was interesting but I'm looking for a little more mainline track footage although I do like the overall functionality of the compact yard of this layout. I'm looking to go with Atlas-O sectional track. Would really appreciate some help. I have several Steam locomotives and will use the layout for both passenger and freight.

Email: pkants@sympatico.ca

 Thanks.

Here is the track plan that I designed for The Western Reserve Model Railroad Museum.

It is an 8 x 12 foot layout.

here is link to see the layout

Forgot to mention that I would like to use both O-54 and O-42 radius curves since O-42 is minimum radius for my MTH 4-6-4.

Welcome Coal Load!

Take a look at Sunday Photo Fun this week!  Wes has a great 6x12 layout.

Also, here's the link to Thor trains:  http://www.thortrains.net/

this is a 6 x 11 I was working on. I tried to use 054 or larger diameter. there are different levels, the blue track is ground level. the red track is the upper level and the black goes under the red on the left, that will be a plateau with a tunnel underneath for the black track.

this is a version with a wing

I have a 6x14 table layout with:

  • O-42 inside loop
  • O-54 outside loop
  • Lionel O22 (O-31 curve) turnouts
  • Tubular track
  • Reversing loops

Here's the track plan (click on image to enlarge):

What I like about this layout is that I can run almost any size engine and run multiple trains at once.  The longer trains not be able to switch to the inside loop, but larger trains can still be run on the outside loop while smaller trains move and switch around the interior at the same time.

Enjoy,

Chris

This is my plan.  It's 6x11.5, and 6x12 would fit even better.

0-72 and 0-54 curves on the outer loop.  You could go all 0-72 if you go just over 6ft.

Inner loop is mostly 0-42 with a couple of 0-54s here and there.  2% grades mostly, but a 3% grade at the top of the inner loop on the end of the 2%, and a 3.5% back down to get under the girder bridge.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your feedback. Some really good ideas here. Looking for more if anyone has additional plans.

Wes,

I really like your layout. What size are the swithes? Do you have a track list?

Thanks

Interesting layouts.

How would you block them so multiple trains would use the layout?

Thanks

This is pretty much it.  2 0-54s switches and 2 0-42 switches make the connections from the outer and inner loops.  I'll probably put in 1 more 0-42 right under the girder bridge to park some trains.

Wes,

I'm "remodeling" and expanding my current track plan. Hoping to borrow your plan for part of mine.

Thanks

Help yourself.  It's pretty basic, but works for me!
