I've been able to find different ways (thanks to the forum!) on how to clean the actual rails - thanks.
But what about the rest of the track - the ties, the sides and undersides of the rails? I have some really old track that hasnt been cleaned in years - and it will take forever to clean these parts by hand. Can I dip them in a quick solution and let them soak and then air dry?
I know the train should still run fine with the tops of the rails clean, but Im sure eventually the junk along the rest of the track may work its way up.
Try using a Dremel tool with a rubber tip attachment and or a brush tip attachment to clean the track.

I have heard that there's a product called Evaporust, sold at Auto Zone, that does a good job of cleaning up all the rust from track. Drop it in, let it soak, and the track comes out clean. I haven't tried it myself though.
As far as dirt, soaking the track in Purple Power or Castrol Super Clean for a few hours will get rid of the dirt, but it will probably also chew away the paint on the ties. If you don't mind that, it'll work. I just cleaned a new-to-me (but well used) Lionel 45-degree crossing this way over the weekend. Be sure to wear gloves when messing with that stuff, because it's very strong.
