Jim:

Judging by how that pulled quote came out, it needs a little work. Big Smile [:D]

I understand you can respond to any individual post, however, I think the absence of teh "quick reply" feature which was at the bottom of the previous format is an inconvenience.

I agree that the absense of the "quick reply" is inconvenient.  Often, a "reply" is adding to an ongoing discussion, rather than a comment on a specific message.

I note, however, that clicking the "reply" on a message only puts the text of that  message  at the top of the reply screen.  New reply text is no different, still appearing at the end.

Are there any other differences?

Did not go smooth - site wouldn't accept correct password but am on now (Confused [%-)] Question [?] somehow).  Join date is today instead of whatever it was previouly.  That's OK  - makes me feel a little younger Smile [:)]

Actually, the main focus of the trains.com changes wasn't the forum, it was the magazine sites.

I'm not sure why the forum software was changed, since (to me) it seems pretty similar to the previous forum layout.

As I mentioned previously, for problems, contact our customer service at customerservice@kalmbach.com, or Erik Bergstrom through the forum e-mail.

Our forums were changed because the new software communicates with our new registration process, where the old software wouldn't.

As for the registration, it's a little goofy, because when you first go to this page, http://subscribe.trains.com/ecare you're a NEW GUEST even if you had an old Trains.com account. A lot of people have tried the RETURNING GUEST field, which doesn't work because to the new system they're a new user. We're trying to clarify that as I type this.

I'm glad you've all made it back.

Sorry, I guess I'm more of a "half full" type.  Smile [:)]

Added the smiley to address the earlier misconception that there are no smileys here. (Find them from the pull-down menu when posting... assuming your browser can see pull-down menus.)

I could not get in using CompuServe which uses netscape. I got in using Explorer but it is to slow to be worth anything.

I thought I posted this last night.

I sent an e-mail to the address that Bob Keller gave, explaining my problem with logging on at home.  I got back an invitation to call Kalmbach.  The woman who answered understood my problem and advised me to look for a firewall and to turn it off while logging on the first time from home.  I did; and it worked.  It was refreshing to have my call answered promptly by someone who spoke good English, understood the problem, and knew the solution.  Kudos to Kalmbach.

Kind of hard to find a genuine English-speaking-born-and-raised customer service rep. these days.  And to find any CSR who both understands the problem AND can solve it is almost unheard of!

After encountering a few self-inflicted quirks, I managed my way through the re-registration process. I like the overall look of the upgrade. If I'm not mistaken, do I perceive an improvement in the resolution of posted pictures? Maybe it's because I'm wearing my glasses which I don't always do.

I have noted a couple of  minor glitches.

Under the "Toy train operating and collecting" title near the top of the screen there is a "Started by ..." notation.  For multiple screen topics, the user name shown reflects the user of the first post on the screen, rather than who started the original topic.

Also, the "right-click" editing features don't quite work right.  Text editing features only show if text is highlighted.  When highlighted, there are no "cut" or "paste" capabilities.  The "Edit" pull-down does, however, have these features.

Not sure I like the logging in with the email address thing, unless Kalmbach is going to start encrypting all of it's pages(or at least the log in page). Disapprove [V]

I agree with others, the Reply functionality is odd.  While I am hopefully not quoting him, this reply screen has all of John Kerklo's post at the top of my screen as I type this.

PS.  I am trying the "Do not allow Replies" checkbox just to see what it does.
