Back Up After Change
Posted by jkerklo on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 3:51 PM
I needed to test that I could post and reply, so I though a post where anyone could do so would be useful.   I didn't have any serious problems, but the link in the e-mail I got didn't work and my bookmark to CTT was dead too.

I went to  http://www.trains.com/ and found my way to registration and activating my old username.  That part went smoothly.

You'll need to delete your bookmarks (i.e. the old classictoytrains.com or forum) and re-bookmark.

I guess the new color is light blue rather than the red that used to predominate!

I had no problem re-registering (from my office).  Also deleted my old bookmark and bookmarked the new URL once I got home.

I did notice that things are pretty slow loading via the dialup I have here at home, although it's no problem with the high-speed connection I have at the university.  No big deal, I guess, since I'm usually in no big hurry when I'm playing around at home.

As with anything new, it'll just take a bit of getting used to.  Change is never easy, or without a glitch or two.

I kind of liked the red color (judging as much as red is my favorite color) but other than that it appears to be a great change!

No problems here either. Overall I like the new look, although the features will probably take some learning and getting use to. I also really like the looks of the sweepstakes :)

The one thing I can already see that I do miss is the Quick Reply at the bottom of the page. I used this all the time.

I also have one question for the adminstrators. I noticed in my profile a line called "post rank". What exactly is this? I didn't see it in the FAQs, and don't recall it from the old forum.

I had difficulty getting back on, plus this "reply" page took a while to come up...but then, I'm no computer whiz. I loved the "what is your password" question. I had a PASSWORD??? Joe

I initially had a problem when I tried to enter the new password(with retype verification).  I mistyped, and when I backed over one, Netscape totally locked up on me.  Could have just been a random windows (old - 98SE) (or virus, but I hope not!) thing.

I just went through the process smoothly the second time though.

I have to disable spam/cookie blocker each time I want to reply.  Not good. Disapprove [V] It says some third party activity is going on.  I have re-added the site to all of the blockers [spam, content and cookies] and still does it.   Like the new format and etc.  Hope I can figure that quirk out.

The transition went smooth-as-silk for me. The new site does seem a little more data-intensive (yes, I'm still stuck on dial-up), but other than that, everything looks really good, so far! Smile [:)]

I use a Mac and have had to try about 4 different browsers to get one that seems OK.  Right now I am using Firefox. Still some of the features aren't working like highlight.  I am also missing a button to insert an image.  Good thing I remember some of the html tags.  I wish we could see the last few posts in the thread when replying.

Still not sure how this is new software is better.

Everything worked fine here. Re-entered my password and was in business. I like the new look.

Late yesterday we discovered that using a Mac (which we do in our offices and which I do at home) running Explorer is a no-go, and IS recommended using Safari. Thats my browser of choice at home and work and it seemed to do pretty well.

Yeah, the dialup speed on the home page is pretty darned slow - I use dialup (but with a Mac with a 1.4 G processor) and my reaction last night was "well, guess I won't be going to the home page from home."

I believe that it has been designed for the Plutocrats using high-speed. Hey, guess it is the future.

I've also been told that if you decide to edit a post - the changes aren't instant as they were with the old software, but that the system recycles every 45 to 60 minutes, so there will apparently be a time lag.

Problems? Beats me - I didn't see most of this until late yesterday when the rest of you did. But quoting from an internal e-mal: "If a reader contacts you via e-mail because they’re having troubles logging in to Trains.com, forward their e-mail to Customer Sales & Service at customerservice@kalmbach.com. They’re equipped to help."

Keep in mind that is during normal (Central Time Zone) working hours.

Have fun, hope you like it.

I'm using Explorer with a Mac with no apparent problems.

I was able to reregister this morning without issue as a subscriber. But later, after visiting other sites, I found I had to log in again. I discovered that I then had to log in as a returning guest.

I really liked the look and feel of the old site. The new CTT home page has some nice new features, but is missing some old favorites, like Ray Plummer's question of the week. I hope that returns.

On the main page there are two tool bars. A gray one with buttons for subscribe, renew, gift, customer service, contact us, our store, and downloads.

The red bar has buttons or Our Magazine, News, Layouts, Old Trains, and Forums. Apparently the red bar may disappear (the boss discovered this one since I think he was the last guy using Explorer!).

I miss not seeing who is logged into the forum.  That used to show up on the bottom of the page.  Am I just missing it or is it gone?

I can get to the site; but I can't log on at home.  The computer tells me that it can't show me the log-on page.  It works fine at work.

Bob, that is not good.  We need your knowledge all the time.  Guess you will have to move to your office. Shock [:O]Wink [;)]  Try adding the site and the cookies to your internet site.  Hope you work it out.

Judging from the bazillion emails I received over the course of the last two days, it appears the software upgrade isn't exactly all hearts and flowers.

Only being able to respond to the last post isn't a popular feature and the removal of the smiley graphics isn't positive. The sign on was smooth. The additino of the avatar feature is also a nice touch.
