Z-4000 and psi?
Posted by CB&Q on Sunday, February 7, 2010 2:02 PM
been on other forum can't seem to get the z-4000 to run a ps-1 loco. I think I exhausted avenues for help there so am asking for help here. any one here run both tmcc and mth dcs? basically I go to menu\system\var-1 push the s2 button to turn it off then go back and turn var-1 on using the s1 button, now then I go to tr on dcs remote and push the tr button select var-1 and then go to right arrow and push button till I see the ps1 under a button and push it alls fine the ps-1 engine responds remote says please wait, I do. now after it checks the board and no advance of voltage to the track yet it starts to blow the bell and the lights blink refuses to operate either forward or back when I push the dir button on remote. now if I use a transformer called the Max this engine works fine why come for? anyone got a clue? thanks for any help on this .

Are you using the "TIU" "Variable Voltage IN 1" and "Variable out 1"?

How about page 91 in the DCS Manual,  your "TCU" is not power by the "Variable Input 1" another feed is needed.

"Advanced Wiring" --- If your "only" using the Variable Channel, you must power the TIU itself with a jumper to to "Fixed 1 input" from the one your using, or plug a small transformer into the"Aux Power Input"

I have an ac power supply hooked to the tiu aux port so is powered seperately from var-1 channel. this is most baffling as I have a transformer called the max I do same with it as I do for dcs tiu power transformer on go tr select it then use # 5 key to advance to ps1 and it fires up and after that when I hear a clank I hit direction button and off she goes as smooth as silk. the Z-4000 not so after the remote says be patient I get the bell ringing and if I advance or touch the dir button it sits there and has a hissy fit like tmcc does with signal issues bell rings and headlights flash and speaker gets a loud clicking sound. does this added info help you understand whats going on from the beginning?

I recently bought a PS-1(Proto Sounds One) steam engine at a train show. What I had to do was replace the original battery in the tender, and had to make sure the new battery was fully charged, also the PS-1 won't work with the DCS base unit like a PS-2 or PS-3 will do. The PS-1 engine starts up when transformer power is applied and moves after I push the direction button on my Z-1000 transformer, even though the Z-1000 is wired through the DCS unit I bought, DCS handheld is turned off. My DCS base is powered by a Z-750 hooked up straight to it, no speed control unit. I also have a AIU for my switches.

From what I have found with PS-1 is that it don't take any commands from the DCS base, so the handheld unit is useless for me with the PS-1 engine.

In my DCS Manual, page 97 "Universal Locomotive Control"

After selecting"TIU1 VAR 1 ", did you do the next step  ---"To set a starting minium voltage and maximum voltage for tracks connected to the Veriable channels, select the softkey under MTH and scrill to select the starting and maximum voltages"

Item 4:

"Operate your engine --- conventional --- using the DCS remote's thumbwheel instead of the transformer to adjust the locomotive's speed"

When you try it, get back and let us know if it works.

You should be able to control speed in Conventional with the Remote Thumb Wheel.

steps I've tried, tr \tiu1 var 1 then I went to the ps1 soft key pushed it it sets the start voltage at 8 volts thats the max you can go for ps-1 engines so that the engine will do a diagnostic check after 2.5 seconds I should be able to hit direction key and move thumb wheel and engine should go. it doesn't just sits there and makes the bell sounds will not move either way! and max track voltage is set at 22 volts. this engine will work flawlessly with the tpc setup so basically that negates the engine only thing in the mix with using dcs is the z-4000 the tpc works off a different transformer so what do you think?
