When you try it, get back and let us know if it works.
You should be able to control speed in Conventional with the Remote Thumb Wheel.

In my DCS Manual, page 97 "Universal Locomotive Control"
After selecting"TIU1 VAR 1 ", did you do the next step ---"To set a starting minium voltage and maximum voltage for tracks connected to the Veriable channels, select the softkey under MTH and scrill to select the starting and maximum voltages"
Item 4:
"Operate your engine --- conventional --- using the DCS remote's thumbwheel instead of the transformer to adjust the locomotive's speed"
I recently bought a PS-1(Proto Sounds One) steam engine at a train show. What I had to do was replace the original battery in the tender, and had to make sure the new battery was fully charged, also the PS-1 won't work with the DCS base unit like a PS-2 or PS-3 will do. The PS-1 engine starts up when transformer power is applied and moves after I push the direction button on my Z-1000 transformer, even though the Z-1000 is wired through the DCS unit I bought, DCS handheld is turned off. My DCS base is powered by a Z-750 hooked up straight to it, no speed control unit. I also have a AIU for my switches.
From what I have found with PS-1 is that it don't take any commands from the DCS base, so the handheld unit is useless for me with the PS-1 engine.

DMUinCTHow about page 91 in the DCS Manual, your "TCU" is not power by the "Variable Input 1" another feed is needed. "Advanced Wiring" --- If your "only" using the Variable Channel, you must power the TIU itself with a jumper to to "Fixed 1 input" from the one your using, or plug a small transformer into the"Aux Power Input"

DMUinCTAre you using the "TIU" "Variable Voltage IN 1" and "Variable out 1"?
