Stupid question perhaps but I want to test a small cheaper alco pullmor motor to see if it works. It's on the motor truck but detaced from all other parts including the loco frame. Can anyone tell me how to connect it to two tranformer leads just to see if the motor runs.
thanks,
Mike Sacco
In general, there are two brushes, a field wire and a field ground which would be anywhere on the base or metal body of the motor (so four connection points). You will need to connect the field wire to one of the brushes and then connect one transformer wire to the other brush and the second wire to ground. Keep in mind there are several ways Lionel wired these and what I have described ignores the reverse unit lights and smoke units on steamers.
It is possible onthe engine you have the reverse unit is just dirty or damaged thus keeping the motor from running. Usually, either can be rebuilt pretty easily.
Mike,
Connect the wire from the field to either brush. Connect one transformer lead to the other brush, and the other transformer lead is connected to the motor case. Swap the brush connections to change directions.
thanks Guys!!! Got it.
