Bridge Light
Posted by dochooter on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 10:18 AM

I have some large through truss metal bridges that I want to add blinking lights to the top.  I was thinking of using the assembly from the Lionel through truss bridge.  Does anyone know how I can order this?  I am looking for the light and the housing.  Any better ideas welcome as well.

Thanks in advance.

try X mass lights. They have a blinking filiment bulb in the kit, you can cut a socket out of an old X mass light string and use the bulb and socket and run at 12 volts.... but these will blink at random. If you want a more realistic blinking light you may need to do some research for a strobe light circuit board...Radio shack maybe?

Can't remember if it was this board or the other one but I seem to recall someone used a 12v auto turn signal flasher for their bridge lights. Constant rate of flash was achieved this way, mite try a search to see if you can find it.

actually this could work. need the flasher unit too...oh and I think you need a D.C. power supply for the set up...how many bulbs can you operate at one time?

Try this website: http://www.miniatronics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=2_6

Many of the big hobby stores carry miniatronics products.

Thanks.  I will try Buckeye's site.  Looks like exaclty what I wanted.  I went to Radio Shack and they were not very helpful.

One more thing there Dochooter, if you are going to all the trouble of putting strobe lights on the top of the bridge, you might want to put green and red navigation lights on the underside of the bridge if your crossing is navigable.  Big Smile [:D]

When you pull a trailer with your pickup, most of the time you need to install a heavy duty flasher because of the extra lights.  I don't know for sure, but a 40' 5th wheel trailer and the truck are probably drawing more than we are going to need on an average layout. The flashers are not expensive and sound like a great idea.

An auto flasher would require dc power but an HO/N powerpack are really cheap.

dougdagrump

I don't understand your post.  Do you mean to power the flasher with an HO/N power pack or do you mean instead of a flasher? If so, what would make it flash?

Use the power pack to power the flasher and the bridge lights.

I would get in touch with Lionels parts dept and see if you can order them. or if you have the bridge in question look in its paper work and see if they give a part # for the lights or use the part # for the bridge to see if they have a parts breakdown on there web site. hope these ideas are of some help to you. have a nice evening.

As always, everyone is helpful.  Here is a picture of the main bridge area.
