Forum Refresh Question
Posted by EIS2 on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 1:45 PM

When I post a topic or reply to a topic and go back to the main screen, the post is not reflected on the main screen unless I refresh my browser.  When I do the same on the OGR forum, the main screen is refreshed without my having to take any action.

Is the difference due to diferences in the forum software or is the difference due to some setting in my browser?  I am using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.

Thank You...

Earl

Earl,

I am using Microsoft IE 7 with Vista and when I return to the main screen, I see my post without a refresh.

EIS2,

Earl,

My confuser (with Windows XP home with IE 7) seems to act like yours. I seem to have to refresh either by hitting the refresh icon or by ending the session and then coming back to it. There may be a time-delay at the CTT server. There is a brief comment about this "now you see it, now you don't" phenomenon in the FAQ section of this Forum under the sub-caption "Navigation." There is also some page-buffering (perhaps "caching," as in the verb to cache, is a better term) on my end. I try not to let it bother me.

By the way, didn't you pose a question to another forum about the operating principles behind the postwar Lionel 362 barrel-loader? Why not give the big hitters on this Forum a whack at it -- in a new thread, of course? I might even have a go at it myself.

Does the same thing for me too, Earl, using IE6  - Whenever I post, the formerly last post still shows on the main page. I just live with it. As you noted, next refresh, my post pops up.

Do you have the same problem on the OGR forum?  My browser refreshes immediately on the OGR forum.

My browser refreshes immediately on OGR every time I go there. My browser dosn't refresh when I go on CTT. I have to refresh each time I visit unless I post. Then it refreshes with my latest post at the top of the page. Weird.

My experience on OGR is the same as Jim's.

Because the only consistent thing about Internet Explorer is its inconsistency (and the monthly security patches). I have to support a few apps in my job that require it, and the inconsistency drives me nuts.

For what it's worth, IE6 under XP refreshes automatically for me. As does Firefox on my Windows 98, ME, and 2000 PCs at home.

I have gotten in the habit of always using either the link at the top or the link at the bottom of every thread to get back to the main page.  2 benefits of doing this are:  1, The page will reload/refresh since I'm not using the "back" button (which to save time and bandwidth Back button functionality can be set to display a "Cached" page which, when only seconds old is almost always good except on forums when we're actually making changes to the webpage) so I see a greyed out link telling me I've already seen threads I've already looked at.  They appear crisp and blue again if someone posts after I've visited the thread. and 2, your problem also goes away.

It's no extra clicks and when you're through reading a thread the link at the bottom (or top depending on your preference settings for the forum) is usually closer to the pointer than the back button.

IE - 7 (as well as most version of Internet Explorer) has an option that determines how / when a page will be reloaded as opposed to being displayed from local cache.

On IE 7 there is an "automatic" setting which I believe is default.  This may explain the difference between ORG and CTT forums.  You may wish to try different settings - "Every time I visit the web page" will may force a refresh, however it MAY also impact your browsing speed overall, especially on slower connections / computers as it effective disables page caching.  You will be getting each page fresh every time you click to that page.

This setting on IE 7 is in the Tools menu.  Select Internet Options, then Setting button under Browsing history.  Other versions of IE may have it at different locations in a Tools menu.

As with all things computer and technology - try this at your own risk and mileage may vary Smile [:)]

Thank you for your reply.

I switched my browser setting from "Automatic" to "Every time I visit the web page" yesterday.  It made no difference.

Download Firefox and get on with life. It refreshes all these web forums each time I visit. IE doesn't.

I've been recommending Firefox (and its predecessors) for a very long time. Firefox isn't a perfect browser either, but it's better at complying with Web standards, and it makes it much harder for a rogue site to do nasty things to your computer, since it doesn't have the hooks into Windows that IE has.

Ah, the Yankee computer experts.  Down South, we jerk the string and rattle the empty gallon tin can.  Works everytime. Whistling [:-^]  I'm running IE and XP and desktop and IE and Vista on laptop and they refreash everytime.  Strange how it works for some and not others.  It can be related to any anti-virus and anti-spam and blockers you are running.  I was running too many.  The Time Warner expert got on the phone with me and got a lot of my extras gone as they were already being applied by their anti-virus and anti-spam.  Also do not use their firewall nor Microsoft's.  Have nice wireless router and it is "built" into that [which he explained].

I don't mind having to refresh the page here on CTT. No, I don't have to do so on the other forum. But seems everytime I check out the other forum, as I did tonight, there's some condescending comment about lower end trains, MPC, Industrial Rail or of the like as "junk, crap, garbage, etc."

Funny, because my so-called junk works all the time and has NEVER needed multiple trips back for service. Given the more than numerous threads over there complaining about locos not working out of the box, and still not working after being serviced, I truly wonder if those who make such comments about so-called "junk" actually know what junk is? How can something that ALWAYS works, and NEVER needs factory service be junk?

I guess $1,000 locos that have correct rivet counts aren't junk even when they don't work and can't be serviced either. Hmmmmm? I know a lot of people who would call that junk, and the people who insist on buying it, fools.

I'll stick with the 027 low-end (that ain't JUNK!!!!) and I'll stick with this forum, even if it means a SMALL inconvenience of hitting the refresh button.

I really don't see much of that talk on the other forum, Brian. But what I do see is a lot of nasty remarks from people who don't agree with another poster's opinions. But it was funny. Right after Jim Barrett got on and ripped them all a new one for doing so, they all were suddenly transformed into enlightened beings and super deluxe embassadors of the hobby.
