I chose the '50s. The time when steam and diesel ran side by side. PAs and Cabforwards. Geeps and Bullmooses. F units and Mikados. Its all good.

I chose the 1950s. Really the magic era for me is mid-1940s to mid 1950s for the transition from steam to diesel. I prefer to model the later steam engines and early diesels - EAs, F3s. Mostly I like the classic passenger trains of that era before the interstates and airlines nearly destroyed that mode of travel in the states

WELCOME to the forums [:)]

Thanks for taking the poll.

If you have converted any of your pics to computer disk, you are more than welcome to email me some. I love railroad pics both steam and diesel. If you ever want to tell any of your stories feel free to email some to me. I would consider it an honor to read them.

I have very clear personal memories of railroading in the 1940s, and for many reasons that is my favorite decade. I began photographing trains then, and made many friends on the three roads (LV, CNJ, PRR) that operated in my home town. I had many cab and caboose rides and learned how to fire and run steam (and diesel).

There were, of course, many of the great trains still around, though I couldn't afford to ride many. Still, just watching them was a great delight. The memories are still fresh, and it's great to have the photos to look back on.

I voted 1970s. I love second generation locomotives. You can witness the debut of the SD40-2, see the last runs of the F units and GP9s, and try to guess when the CF7 program is going to stop. Unfortunately, the 70s is a bad time for railroads, the Penn Central bankruptcy may be able to wreck the decade[:(]

Besides all of the Railroads of each decade, there seems to be something missing...the Electric Passenger Trains! I know a lot of cities have them (including Chicago, where I grew up...The CTA). But there is another one the Chicago, South Shore, & South Bend RR. They have both diesel and electric trains. Something to think about! Ralph Zimmer Alsip, IL.

I voted for the 50's era, partly because I am a "baby boomer" and do have some fond memories. But my second choice will be the 60's, because of the road I used to work for, and all the memories, I still have from back then.

I vote for the 40's. I wasn't even born at that time, but articles I've read and photographs I've seen of this era have always intrigued me. I also am nuts about passenger trains of this period in time, with both heavyweight consists and streamlined beauties sharing center stage. I would be so cool to go back in time and actually see so much from this era up close and personal.

I would have to say the 1940`s because of WWII.Fighting on two fronts on opposite sides of the world.what would we have done without our extensive railroad system?

I'd say that the best decade was the 40's to mid 50's - for the simple reason of steam's last stand on class 1 railroads. I'm only 16 years old, but love steam to an almost endless degree. That time period at the end of steam showcased the best it had to offer; SP GS4 Northerns, SP Cab forwards, UP Big Boys, luxurious passenger trains, as well as all the other giants of steam. You just can't beat steam (in my humble opinion).

I am not really sure Ithink 1970. But on my model railroad I use 1960 motive power and 1980 cars. Have you checked my other polls. one is favorite industry to model. The other is What's western railroad do you miss.[:D] I don't know how to get links.
