No. 1 is the Tennessee Central, "The Road of Personal Service," and my first railroad employer. Big enough to run heavy trains with big power in mountain territory. No. 2 is the Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay (Now the Bay Line) because it ran across the road from my house, when I was a kid during WWII, with both steam and diest power, passenger and feeights. One of my classmates' dad was their Supt. of Motive Power.

My favorite from the past would be the Southern Pacific.
Current railroad would be UP. Interesting that some people for whatever reason seem to really dislike the UP, but you have to give them credit for saving and operating 844 and for restoring and operating 3985. For that, they get my vote.

tsgtbob I agree with you B&O is the way to go. I like it because it used to run through my town before CSX bought everything. My other Favorite would be the southern railway.
I like NS but CSX has the B&O.

Faveorite all-time, Canadian Pacific in the 1950s -'70s. Favorite today? Candadian Pacific, but CN is creeping up. I'm a blood traitor.[:(]

what is your favorite north american railroad?

"Ship IT on the Frisco!"

My favorite railroads are (in order) Frisco; Kansas, Oklahoma, and Gulf with the associated Oklahoma City, Ada, and Atoka; Rock Island; Santa Fe; and the Missouri Pacific.

Least favorite: UP, BNSF, and any of the other by-products of the mega-mergers.

Does anyone know the name of the line that ran between Ada, OK and Shawnee, OK? It was abandoned and removed many years ago. The line ran through several small towns including Konawa and Maud.

I'm also looking for old picutures of the train station and loading docks east of Maud. The old railroad spur used during the oil boon of the 20's can still be seen from satellite photos.

Thanks.

The Central Vermont - railroading through the beauty of the Green Mountain State down to the Connecticut shoreline. Plus, in the latter years, a few Amtrak trains along the rails as well.

My all-time favorite has to be the Chicago Great Western. Matched sets of maroon or rusty red F-Units pulling long "mortgage lifters" in the middle of the night. They would shake the whole house. And the "Lucky Strike" logo had no match in my opinion.

For a current railroad, I have to be partial to CSXT, but the paint jobs on the engines still should have CHESSIE THE KITTEN somewhere on their flanks!!!!
1950-1980 Chesapeke & Ohio (chessie colors)
1940-1950 Pere Marquette railroad

Milwaukee Road for all time, but as a child of the eighties I really was turned on by the Regional movement. Chicago Central, Iowa Interstate, Wisconsin Central, and Fox River Valley.

Other favorites: Columbus and Greenville, Green Bay & Western, Atlanta and St. Andrews Bay, Chicago & Northwestern, TSBY, and SOO.

Southern Pacific, hands down. That would be of course before the UP swallowed them whole. My second favorite would have to be the Rock Island.

PRR, I suppose because I grew up in Pennsy territory, though the Montour and the B&O were not far off. I remember going to the Pennsy station in Pittsburgh as a little boy to meet a train at night. The tuscan E unit with gold pinstripes and light gleaming from the portholes was the most beautiful thing in the world.

I also have a soft spot for the NYC. My mother's father, grandfather, stepfather and uncle all worked for the Central. Her father and grandfather were killed in accidents at work. She does not share my love of trains.
