Good early morning everyone. Tom & Nick Excellant shots[tup] It's nice to see layouts that are operational and to see the level of co-operation between you two gents on maintaining the Nicks pics albums good stuff.Tom I can see myself riding along the canam as well kudos for sure. I only hope that once seniced my layout will be close to your level of thought and detail [tup] Also Tom I didn't actually find the "girls" they were dropped off at the museums front gate.[;)][:0] They have limited social, skills as they are the female equivalent of Boris so releasing them in a "target rich " environment like Toronto is not recomended[B)] BTW dave the little blue pills you use on Boris work equally well on the girls so transporting them to and rom our oktoberfest days won't be a problem.[;)] BTW Tom they did say something about doing a snitzel making contest next week. Ted No problem mentioning the railimages site and no problem if you wi***o add more of your shots to it. If you want me to post some of your shots next week let me know [tup][:)] Nick The first shot was MS&C 302 a single truck single ended snowsweeper. The body was built by ruggels a small US car manufacturer the guts were McGuire cummings origin a major US work equipment and traction passenger car manufacturer. The flat motor was built by the Grand trunk railway in house ( MS&C's owner ) Quite often as in this shot a small derrik was fit to the deck used mostly for tie & rail replacement. russell A couple of fine pictures there and an interesting url to boot. Troy what can I say you are a master craftsman [tup] I'm dying to see the completed PCC car once I get the pictures to you. It will be a welcome edition to be sure. from the limited scratch building I've done in HO I can only imagine how much time went into those cars. truely stunning work.[^] Well gents i'll bid everyone good night and a happy Thanksgiving/ Columbus day to you all. I'm heading to moms for the big feast tomorrow so I'll be a late arriver as per usual. Let's hear a chorus of "Oh Canada" by our mens Madrigal Singers. The 43 lbs. Turkey has been plucked, stuffed (ham dressing) and is now being levered into our outside brick kiln. For Columbus Day, the Lasagne, Italian sausages, pasta and meat balls are prepared. The Marinara sauce has been simmering since late last night.[tup] Should be a great amalgam of Anglo/Mediterranean flavors. Tom, make mine a Ballantine India Pale Ale, if you please. Gurggle, gurggle, "Our" Place kitchen and Staff are ready, are you?

Yesterday was a roaring sucess with fine pix from all parameters of "Our" Place territory. Like Fallen Flags, this feature is another winner. Conspicously absent were those who are "away" or otherwise indisposed for the moment. Think what this will be when all our Members have returned...awesome![^] Tom, although I have visited your site many times, those crisp clean scenes along the CanAm are irrestible. Also, the "nitty gritty" of contributions by Nick, Rob and Russell are worthy of the highest praise.[tup][tup][tup]. Rob, I've sent mail in re: my additional pix of "little" K.C., MO.[:D]

Now, what of all this scuttlebutt concerning your hard working Manager?[:O] Balderdash I say! Are my efforts only to be made sport of?"[swg] Speaking of which, I noticed on our "social calendar" that Boris has a birthday on Oct. 31st. Hardly a surprise given the signifigance of that date.[alien] BTW, you will notice there are no horse shoe tossing events. Due to an inadvertant "toss," our Cheif [C=:-)] suffered a blow to his cranium.[V] From now on, we will use dried horse dung copiously supplied by member barndad Doug. I was hoping for more pix on Gunns progress on that beautiful A.T.S.F. Northern...maybe next week? Yeah, I know...maybe never!

There is much to do, so I need to get my "act together." Please share this Holiday with the rest of us. You will feel better for it.[:D] Boris, how is the marinara sauce coming along? Just stopped by to baste the bird,scrape a few veggies & generally set the wheels in motion for tonight,full menu later. [:-)]TOM-now imagine a trip on the C.P 1886 style-now THAT would be an adventure,please excuse rapid departure last night-minor `episode` brought on by weekends excess,can`t comment R.E baseball-no frame of reference -Columbus,Vikings,forget `em--we all know it was Prince Madoc of Gwynedd and his intrepid ( read "barking mad") warrior band who made the first crossing,teamed up with the first native group they met and promptly disappeared into the hinterland ( modern Gene-mapping techniques have made a good case for this-honest [^] AL-R.E-dome cars,Ontario Northland use them on the Polar Bear Express ( Cochrane-Moosonee,summer only ) have it in mind that cars from C.P &/or B.C.R in use but will check. MANAGER TED-consider all hairs split - as to the other matter,have just seen Chrissie in Paddy Wongs Bait,Tackle,Sandwich & Evening Wear Emporium and no doubts remain in my mind...back later,visitors arrived,nick

Ah! It is good to be back from the wilds of the world. Since it is morning could I have a strong coffee and Danish? Thank you. Sorry I do not have the time to read the post for the last three weeks. There were quite a load of them and judging from Tom's comments thanks to the shutdown by Kalmbach we got quite a few extra hits. I guess I missed out on all of this fun.

Last week I was in Calgary leaving on Saturday to fly home. Our good friends to the north were planning for the three day weekend when they celebrate Thanksgiving. They have turkey as we do south of the 49th. The office emptied out early on Friday. By the time we finished up at 2:30 you could fire a cannon through the building and not hit anybody. The flight back to Dallas, which left at the unholy hour of 6:40 AM was completely sold out as were most other flights out of Calgary. I guess their thanksgiving is their biggest travel weekend as ours is.

I think we are all aware of Canadian Pacific's plans to increase capacity of their line through the Rockies by adding double track, passing sidings, better signalling, etc. We saw this on the taxi ride from the airport. We crossed over the line going east out of Calgary and they had widened a cut and had rail laid out for the second main (or passing siding). They still needed the alignment crew to tamp and straighten it out, but that is coming. It is sad that the Canadian does not traverse the CP rail anymore even though the name came from the CP, not CN. The only way you can ride the CP is to take the Rocky Mountain Rail Tour train from Calgary or Edmonton to Vancouver. This is on our list of to dos in the near future.

My trip to Port Harcourt Nigeria was uneventual, if you consider riding in a car with a machine gun toting guard and staying in the walled compound with 20 armed guards at the front gate as uneventful. Food left a little to be desired. Lots of mystry meat which mostly was unchewable. They had some great looking salids, however, I would not eat them for fear of getting a severe case of the trots. Then you always get the shakedown upon leaving with the airport staff asking "Do you have anything for me?" It cost me about $10 in bribes to get out of that sewer. Fortunately I will never have to go back there as long as I live. Getting from there to Dallas entailed being in the hands of Lufthansa for 22 hours leaving at 10 PM Nigerian time and arriving at 2 PM dallas time with a 6 hour time change. Needless to say I am a little sore from sitting so long.

We were delayed in departing to Nigeria three days waiting for a small insurrection to calm down. Spending a three day vacation in London at company expense is not too bad, though. At my age I cannot outrun a speeding bullet any longer so I am passing on trips to such garden sport for the foreseeable future.

I had better start clearing off my desk, so I will sign off for now.

Rob Your early mornin' Post brings to mind that we should be getting to a point where the Rendezvous in Toronto activities should be kicked 'round - that is given you are still "into" that "consensus thing." [swg] Let's "do" some Email! As I've indicated previously, my airline reservations will be made before year's end ..... with or without the presence of Helga 'n Hilda [:O]

Ted That menu looks terrific - even cranked something in for good ole Chris Columbus, eh [?] All that fame for getting lost! [swg] Apparently you have accepted the offer of Assistant Chief Chef [C=:-)] without hesitation! Many thanx! I'm sure Nick appreciates having additional talent in the kitchen - along with another set of eyes to keep track of Boris - HIS Assistant. <good grief>

The Sunday Photo Posting Day! feature will remain as in spite of the "ignorance" previously encountered, the idea is for the majority to enjoy the "show," and that we did! Thanx for the kind words regarding the Can-Am. Some of those shots bring a smile to my face and there are times when I look at the layout thinking, "Did I see this or that before?" Only to quickly counter with, "Of course you idiot, you built it!" [swg]

Nick [dinner] Dinner at 5 PM is what we're calling for and by the looks of things, we may have to use one of the OKTOBERFEST tents for the spillover crowd. I understand YOUR FRIENDS from the Can-Am track gang are expected along with their rivals from CP 'n CN. That should be an interesting gathering. Definitely will have to put 'em in a tent ... last time they all got together in the back room ..... well, I'm still paying for the repairs! [swg]

I concur about the adventure part regarding an 1886 trip aboard CP's cross-Canada train. I'd much prefer the 1986 iteration! [swg] Amenities - domes - drinks - domes - comfortable bedrooms - domes - diners - domes! [yeah]

No sweat on the baseball - just that time of year for many of us. Sports - beer - trains - sports - beer - trains! I just know I've left SOMETHING out! Oh [yeah] [}:)][:-,]

Ah, Prince Madoc of Gwynedd, how COULD I have neglected to mention him and his merry band of marauders, maulers and manglers. <tsk, tsk> [swg]

By the by, Chrissy has applied for the "position" of "relief bartender." Now, that's a thought - but I surely wouldn't want this to somehow come in conflict with Manager, Assistant Chief Chef [C=:-)] 'n part-time Desperado Ted's juggling of his personal "affairs." Something to ponder ....

Never rode the C. & N.W. R.R. but have long admired their steam loco roster. Oh, its best that Chrissy retains her full-time job at Paddy Wongs. She gets an employee discount on all bait, tackle, lunch and evening wear which saves me "mucho dinero."[:-^] The noblesse oblige stops here.[:)]

What is the controversy over who discovered the Americas? Archeologists know full well the Chinese landed on our West Coast centuries before the Europeans. If that isn't enough, Siberians crossed the "land bridge" (Asia-America) eons before that.[banghead] I dare say, if they knew what was to become of it all, they wouldn't have bothered.[2c]

Good Afternoon Tom. Guess I'll have a double CR aand a round for the house .Yes I am celebrating early just passed my mid-term tax class exam with an excellent grade . Can't get any better score than perfect.
Now to the subject you suggested.
Remember one of my early leaves home from the Navy I of course took the train when I know everyone else was riding the bus as it was cheaper and faster.. In fact Continental Trailways was running the Golden Eagle service on the west coast between Los Angeles and Seattle. This service provided all food at one's seat except for breakfast that was served in a restaurant but included in the fare. The trip was far faster than the train that required changing three times between LA and Seattle. Going North from LA I rode the OWL up the San Joaquin Valley overnight and connected in Martinez with the SHASTA DAYLIGHT for the long trip to Portland where the GN overnight train to Seattle was waiting.. Every three months the GN-NP-UP alternated the overnight service between Seattle and Portland at the time. Each ran a day train between the two Northwest Cities. I did learn that a sailor could sleep anywhere as the Shasta Daylight car I was assigned to had a bunch of school kids aboard for a good part of the trip and I slept like a baby. all afternoon. We arrived in Seattle early the second Morning after the slow overnight trip from Portland.
For the return I rode the NP streamliner to Partland and made connections with the CASCADE then changed the next AM to the SAN JOAQUIN DAYLIGHT for the trip back to LA. That was really my first all coach experience riding passenger trains and found out it wasn't to difficult to sleep in a coach seat. On Navy pay the meals did seem a little expensive but losing a few pounds probably didn't hurt me. Home cooking put them on while I was home on leave so better to get back in shape before returning to duty. Although much slower than the Bus it was much more enjoyable traveling by rail.

[tup] As one who has a minor in Anthropology (1992), I should inform you that the Chinese landings on our west coast is largely anecdotal, although there have been some findings in the "record" warranting much more study before a conclusion can be made. Insofar as the Bering Land Bridge crossings are concerned - plenty of evidence there, as the bi-pedal community of humans crossed from what we now call Asia into North America. The "discovery" aspect is only a western term - Euro in fact - to somehow place legitimacy for the conquest of the "new world." We "discovered" it, therefore it's ours ..... I wonder if they were ever tried on local passenger trains.

The link that Tom provided will probably mention more about it. Rob, great pix yesterday of the trolleys, glad you like the Branson Scenic Railway URL. It's a good thing Boris [alien] hit the pinata instead of your noggin, Ted. Maybe a rubber mallet would do instead of his usual ringer? BTW thanks for the "high praise". Tom, great stuff about the ol' granger road CNW. I don't know much about them, but I miss their paint schemes on the locomotives.

It is heartening to see our total membership back "on line" and contributing generously with fine Posts.[^] Passengerfan Al, I echo your sentiments on day coach rail travel over bus. My X-mas leaves by rail were longer and more expensive than by bus. However, when I actually rode a Trailways from Baltimore to Tulsa, the train fare seemed a bargain. Tom, 'nuther Indian Pale please. Yeah, the Chinese migration is based on incomplete archeological evidence, however, it has not been pursued anything like the European claims of the past. I expect to see the "link" to China deepen and become broader as studies advance.

Wow, everyone seems pleased with the quality and quantity of the banquet.[tup] The Canadian Brass "stole the show" which gives pause for thought. So many people have never been exposed to light classical music that when they hear it for the first time; they come to realize there are "better things in life" afterall.[^]

The week is off to a great start. Let us not forget the 6 month celebration of "Our" Place on Wednesday. Everyone please "click on" your memory files and share some (any) personal experiences related to the many facets of railroading. Don't be reclusive because you imagine no one will appreciate your tale. Believe me, some of the most trivial events can be compelling to other members when that "spark" hits the tender. Okay Leon and Boris, you have both done a magnificent job controlling the "Crew" tent. Not to worry Leon, our insurance will cover the loss of those teeth. Nick & Ted Wow what a spread, and delicasies from across the great dominion to boot [tup] Nick I will try to keep Boris away from his "kinfolk" but you know how nature is[:O] Though I'm certainly not the expert, but I don't recall the ONR having any domes on the Polar bear. The algoma central definatly, but their cars are ex Western Pacific. Ted I haven't made it to yours or Toms mail yet but I will shortly expect answers on the morrow. Tom Good stuff on the CP posters. Old photo's of the car interiors from 1886 look posh posh. Mr Van Horn certainly wanted to cater to the more gentle set. The poster from the 50's demonstrates CP's passion and support for Canada and it's natural history. Something they still do today. On a couple of occastions I've seen CP bring around elements of their historic collections ( posters paintings etc ) for the general public to enjoy. Also I've always liked the C&NW kinda the underdog of the rail world.TRheya lways were looking for bargin locomotives to wring a few more miles out of. Witness the Minnesota ore fields, HH C628's and FM's pulling out thier lights. Pete Thanks for the photo support. I've always been drawn to work equipment. Mainline railway and traction. Quite a bit of it has been saved by various museums both stateside and here. Among our saved work equipment. Oshawa railway 45 { line car built by the NS&T } TTC rail grinders W28 st car subway grinder RT7 ( w28's sister ) W30&31 a MU set of PCC's ( ex cleveland ) used to railgrind after W28's retirement. TTC snowsweeper S-37 and TTC snowplow TP-11 calso call our museum home. TRC ( toronto railway co ) W4 work flat motor.( 1904 car also home built ) TTC crane car C-1( 1912 home built job ) TTC subway flatcars ( work motors } RT27 and RT 28 now move ballast and ties for us. Grand river railway rail binder M4 and Line truck M6 also share barn space at the museum. We also have an ex TH&B tie changer, and a ballast regulator( diesel powered but functional ) and several other wheeled line trucks at our disposal ( most of which we still use for overheadrepair and maintenance ) Russell & tom thanks for the added info on the Milw. electric locomotive. My one question is she stripped or is she still mostly intact? If she's intact is it operational ? *** [#welcome] home. Your journey seems as though it was tiring and harrowing at times. I for one am glad that you wern't asked to outrun any bullets. Thanks for the CP info as well. Maybe the double tracking of CP tthrough the foothills and mountains will entice the Canadain back to where it needs to run. When you were in calgary were you able to ride the Light rail there? I'm back, I despratly need some coffee, I've never drunk so much beer in my life.....
Crewing with this years Germans was Schwer Schone, we usally ended up in a cowboy bar...
How ever I did get a chance to show them some of the Harvey house hotels in the area, those that are left are really somthing. Which brings me to the point, classic trains had some great destinations, El Tovar at the Grand Canyon was one, and perhaps my Favorite. Any others?

A rather uninspiring Tuesday mornin’ in these parts, a bit on the gloomy side – but nothing terribly awful in the forecast. Sun has given way to layers of grey clouds with a few sprinkles here ‘n there. The temps are still very comfortable – 60’s, so the plus side is that Fall is in the air! [tup]

I wi***hat there was a way for me to replicate the pictures that are on those CPR posters – really great. Unfortuntely, that would occupy much too much time and I’m not sure that copies from copies, along with the proper colo(u)rs would do ‘em justice. Glad you liked ‘em and they were supposed to set the theme for the day.

I really know of no other passenger railroad in North America that could rival Canadian Pacific Railways when it came to sheer commitment in moving people. What a company and what a great era it was! Nothing wrong with being proud of what you are, where you are and who you are. Love it! [tup]

The pictures from the St. Louis Museum of Transport show the loco’s as they are on display. So that E2 you referred to should be in prime condition for viewing. C’mon down! [swg] I’m rather serious about that – you and Heather would have a place to stay and there ARE plenty of things to do ‘round these parts. Speaking of traveling – I neglected to mention in my Email about November – we’ve opted out due to the horrendous increases in air fares.

Who would emerge but YOU, heading directly for the back door. In you went (apparently you found a way!) and Boris came flying out of his shed to intercept the “intruder.” Fortunately for YOU that he recognized you. Hope the coffee was fresh enough and the just delivered bakery goods filled your hunger. [swg]

So, now that you are back – perhaps you’ll take the time to check out what has transpired since your last visit. It’s the only way to go – can’t have much of a dialogue when the conversations remain “one way.”

Morning Tom and the gang....I have returned...Substantial progress has been accomplished on the honey do list over the past three days ....Sizeable portion of my paycheck for materials to rebuild 200 feet of wooden fence...yikes! Welcome Back.. "Our Place" seems a bit smaller without your presence...

There was a recent article in the LA Times that illustrates to value of hind sight being 20/20.

The topic was the future of light rail in LA. Two opossing sides proffered their opinions and points who, for the purpose of this writing I shall refer to as group A and group B.

Group A..
Proposes restoration of service on the Wilshire Corridor to Santa Monica. The Mircle Mile is undergoing a revival and a light rail option would enhance the pedestrian friendly enviorment developers are seeking. On the negative side.. property for the right of way would be difficuilt and expensive to obtain and operate and would do nothing to address the issue that it would remain a isolated segment until a route decision could be agreed upon to connect with other segments of Metro Rail...

Group B
Proposes a route via Exposition Blvd utilization existing long abandoned PE trackage to Century City which still exist, virtually intact. Additionaly, the goal is that such a route would bring this area of LA into the modern age and spur redevolpement..Ridership would be tenious during the first six months studies predict. USC and Expostion Park could be potential traffic sources..
This route would be able to connect with other segements of existing Metro Rail at Union Station...On the Negative Side...The Expostion Blvd. suffers from high crime, drug activity and a large homeless population.. Would commuters choose to abandon their automobiles only to be acosted or worse?

While the poltical debate rages, one who is familar with the LA transportation scene, can't help note the irony involved.

There was a previous Whilshire Corridor rail line...Known as the Santa Monica Air Line of the Pacifc Electric... To this very day the former right of way cuts a swath between little and big Santa Monica Blvd...Why do we not just reuse it most might say...
In the wisdom of politics, the various cities obtained indviduel ownership of the land, LA proposed keeping it intact and available for future rails use..The dollar signs from special interest and developers blinded city officials who reversed their initial decision and have permited development of the former right of way as they see fit... Now we will have to bear the cost to replace what we had..

No one is rushing to bulldoze the Exposition Blvd. route.. In time, i'm sure we will have to bear the cost of aquiring a new right of way due to having relinquished an existing right of way for other uses.

I find it ironic that 80% of Metro Rail is constructed on former PE right of way..Makes one wonder what City Hall and Sacramento were thinking when the conspired to kill the PE. Everything old is new again...Just throw a couple of billions here and there to restore what we once had.

Good Afternoon Tom and the gang. Time for a CR and a round for the house.
Just wanted to add alittle to this AM thread on the SP&S. In later years the SP&S simply called the main train between Spokane and Portland the STREAMLINER. It carried cars from and to the EMPIRE BUILDER in Spokane and from and to the NORTH COAST LIMITED in Pasco. Eastbound the NORTH COAST LIMITED departed Seatrtle at 1:30 PM and the EMPIRE BIILDEr departed Seattle at 3:30 PM with both trains in Spokane near the midnight hour. Not only did the SP&S STREAMLINER carry cars for these two train but carried its own cars between Portland and Spokane. The SP&S operated a dining car ,coaches baggage/mail and Sleeper lounge eastbound operated as a parlor and westbound operated as a sleeper lounge. Their has lways been some question as to why the BN chose the NP route between Pasco and Spokane over the SP&S route. The SP&S route enjoyed better grades and it was possible to make better time on the SP*S route. Neither route served any really important cites or towns between Pasco and Spokane. Today the old SP&S route between Pasco and Spokane is a hiking trail.
