Well howdy [4:-)]TOM & Awk,a large pitcher of Iron City with as many glasses as the company requires ( a delightful custom, which would result in bloodshed in this fair land..)-now contest time-well I`m thinking that with postings to other forums (Fora ? -what is the plural ?) your total here will be about the 750 mark........time will tell...received your E-Mail,many thanks-thought I had cropped and centered, evidently not-was sizing any better ?...by the by,enjoying the overviews of the "lesser giants"-the only roads that get any real exposure over here are AMTRAK -mostly through holiday shows on the idiot tube and the "old classics" U.P. (licensed product) and the pre-merger Santa-Fe-both of which enjoy a slightly iconic `Americana` image, along with Coke bottles, gas guzzlers, tumbleweed & diners. Although most Brits are unaware that every time they see a coal train go by they are likely to be looking at a G.M (Can) unit[ poss modified S.D.40,not sure] painted in Wisconsin Central livery, after the E.W.S parent and hauling 50` high side gons fitted with rotary-dump buckeyes....right,couple of little jobs to attend to out back, back to answer post in a bit, cheers! Evenin' Nick

Iron City all around on our Chief Chef [C=:-)]! Boris do your thing! No - no - not that thing - ring the bell! [swg]

Okay - you're in with 750 for the CONTEST .... the Scientific Method will win out! [tup]

Check out the pix at the photo site and you'll note that some of them really are also a bit skewed ...... Practice makes perfect, so they say. No - no, Boris, I wasn't speaking about YOU! [banghead]

Glad you've enjoyed those Fallen Flags, especially since it may all be relatively new to you. Fast forward to the new age of North American railroading and the mega-roads rule. For how long is anyone's guess. However, aside from a few upstart trunk lines, we'll not see the emergence of independent haulers of freight or people unless and until there's a complete "sea change" in governmental attitude and policy. Sad reality.

Take care and perhaps we'll see you later. [tup]

Good evening Y'all

I will have another gin over ice. No vermouth. Just having the vermouth well stoppered in the same room with the gin is enough. Boris, here are a pile of one dollar bills for the juke box. Glad we had it retrofitted to take paper money.

We all will miss New Orleans. It never will be the same. At McKinney Avnue Transit Authority, the vintage trolley line in Dallas, we have been trying to find out the status of the trolleys there. So far we have not been able to contact anybody. If all of their trolleys are true vintage cars and not replicas all ou have to do is to dry them out, lubricate, and put them back on the street. The new versions with printed circuit boards almost require a rebuild. I also wil miss Commander's Palace. We would get there on the trolley. Brennans and the Court of Three Sisters along with Cafe du Monde were great places. The mayor of N O has bought a house in Dallas and moved his family in. Hopefully he will bring some of the great music and food with him.

Time to have another drink. More later,

Evenin' Gang!

Looks like things have perked up a bit 'round here this evenin' ... one can never predict.

An oddity, indeed: six regulars have Posted since the announcement of the latest CONTEST, but only two have acknoweldged ... just a third. Well, I suppose if we were discussing baseball batting averages, we'd say - hey - .333 ain't bad! BUT, we're talking about READING the POSTS! Which apparently still isn't happening . [tdn]

Nick You are indeed the master of inclusiveness when it comes to responding to the Postings of our customers. It's a talent, for sure ....... [tup] And, oh [yeah], thanx for the plaudits regarding the Canadian Jokes for Rob's Birthday Bash.

Your mention of Gunns brings to mind that he isn't the only one who has become an irregular lately. It also appears we'll be losing passengerfan Al as well, but perhaps only on a temporary basis. However, we'll go with the hand we're dealt and let it go at that ...... [tup]

*** An evening Post [?] [wow] Can't recall the last time .... happy to have you aboard. ....... I'm not so sure if I'd be pleased with having the Mayor of New Orleans coming to my town. He was far less than inspiring and also quite inarticulate as well, considering the position he occupies. A Rudy G, he surely isn't! Wouldn't want this guy anywhere near me in a crisis situation ........

I wondered about those trolleys in the Big Easy. Vintage generally is far simpler. For example, back in the days of vacuum tube radio transmitters and receivers, our military was in good shape insofar as carrying on should the effects of EMP occur. The printed circuitry of transistors and the like would simply melt. The old Soviet Navy maintained their vacuum tube gear, while the U.S. Navy laughed at them. Fortunately, we never had to put it to the test ...... As an old CW operator - which isn't used at all anymore in the military - one could punch a signal through the worst of conditions. Try that with voice, data, FAX on SSB and/or other methods. I rest my case.

Sure you don't want to participate in our contest [?]

Ah, I see Leon the Night Man has arrived! See ya in the 'morrow. [zzz]

Things really picked-up after my last visit.[tup] Tom, I'm not ready to cash in my "chits" just yet and to prove it, I'll have an Irish Coffee laced with Jameson's please.[^] "Everything in moderation; including "moderation," right? Its heartening to notice *** and Chris haven't taken the "teetotaler's pledge" yet either. Gunns, its a little early for me but your schedule on paper must look like a Enron "flow chart." Nick, I'm sure we are all grateful for your diligent labo(u)rs for finding the esoteric. As someone once said: "one picture...1000 words." Thanks to Tom and Rob for "picking up the slack" on the tech. disparities among our membership, humbly greatful![tup]

***, "there goes the neighborhood!" New Oreleans' gain, I'm afraid, is Big 'D's loss.[8] The good news is the early "Pearly's" can make a come back. The other "good news" is the "digitized Clones" won't be missed (by me anyhow). The "hindsight" criticism in N.O. is sounding more like a post mortem report that "the patient" wasn't put on life support after his suicide.[:O] 'Course we now live in that "great society" of: "its no my yob." Eventually, it will surely perish from terminal diaper rash.[tdn]

Fallen Flags is definitely a "winner" across the board. Eventually, that "favo(u)rite Road" will hit close to home and the memories will come flooding back as if yesterday. "Way to go," Tom.[^] CM 3, your Mom's comments on the courtesy of train crews was a echo of my Mom's preference for the Santa Fe. Women travelers really look for that sort of thing. Okay, enough of my drival! One for the bar and one for the road please. Boris has his fresh apron and is ready for business, so I won't distract him from......disecting frogs?? Gadfey Daniel, not out here! Those legs are for later, not now![alien] Happy rails.

Good Morning! How nice to see the return of Gunns Kevin, and of course an early morning appearance by our Desperado Manager Ted - the fastest slide trombone in the southeast! [swg]

I'd love to make a trip out to Albuquerque - but the timing ain't the best for me. If I were still single, I'd be there in a flash - have an old heart throb living in the area. Hmmmm - given that it's been a looooooooong time, perhaps in a rest home! [swg] No, not really - she's quite a bit younger than I. Ahhhhhh, what once was ........ [;)]

Sorry, but you lost me somewhere between a "sammich" and "a mid." [swg] Just as long as we know that you're still one of the guys - that's enough. [tup] So, what's YOUR guesstimate for the CONTEST [?]

Looks like there are at least two of us, Ted who aren't thrilled about the leadership in New Orleans - if one can call it that. I recall someone telling me that leadership is the ability to get people to do that which they normally wouldn't do, and to do it without griping, complaining, and perhaps even with a smile. Rudy G has it - this character surely doesn't.

Remember that phrase (from Queen Hillary) years ago about "It takes a village," [?] Well, I'm not referring to raising kids, but keeping the motivation level up for our bar 'n grill is somewhat like that. Thank heavens we have a strong and faithful nucleus to sustain the periods of drought 'round here. I think when one takes a look at those who have been Posting on a regular basis, it should be evident who these people are. Not so much the numbers, but the quality and consistency that counts. Thanx to you and the rest of the nucleus for keeping us refereshed and alive! [tup][tup][tup]

Those Fallen Flags will continue, as they have struck a positive chord 'round here. A bit on the labor intensive side for moi, however - if it works, go for it!

On a different note, we seem to have a good number of mid-westerners as customers. Wondering whether we could muster up a few for a trip to the Midland Railway Historical Association http://www.midland-ry.org/ [?] The fall would be a perfect time to do this and we'd have to coordinate it with earlydiesels Dan, just wonderin ..... [tup]

Okay, gotta get going on the SUMMARY ....

Here's to ya! [tup]

WEDNESDAY’s NEWS & SUMMARY of RECENT POSTS

Good Morning Guys! Ready for the mid-week Epistle [?] Best to read the SUMMARY with a hot cuppa Joe, some pastries and perhaps a light breakfast! [yeah] The Mentor Village Bakery pastry case is chock full of interesting selections – go ahead, give in! [}:)]

News of the Day:

(1) Tomorrow is our Fish ‘n Chips Nite along with our great steaks ‘n fries. Perhaps Nick our Chief Chief [C=:-)] will delight us with something special on his Nick’s Picks Menu board. [tup]

(2) CONTEST

We now know the order of Posts amongst the Regulars, but how many does the Proprietor have thru Page 100[?] Take a crack at that one …….

Shouldn’t be too hard to wager a guess from the statistics given in Tuesday’s SUMMARY. To help you compute the number, there were 42 Posts from people who were not listed in the SUMMARY.

At least six customers must participate in order for the Prize to be awarded. Prize will be announced on Friday, along with the winner! [;)]

Participants and guesstimate (closest wins):

Theodorebear Ted 1200
nickinwestwales Nick 750

(3) Fallen Flags Requests for information on a specific railroad will be honored providing I can find the data within my library. Then it’s a labor intensive matter of typing it into a word processor format for transfer to the thread. It may take awhile, but I’ll get there …….. just keep checking out what’s going on ‘round here! Isn’t that the idea, anyway [?][;)]

Missed any? Check out page 106 for and

Hi TOM and the boys, A double Dalwhinnie this morning after a bad night of pain...
Fallen Flags:
I model the San Francisco to Monterey area. One end of the layout is San Francisco harbor and the other end is Monterey's fishing port and Cannery Row. The Southern Pacific ran the "Del Monte" btween the two. I plan to run Short trains pulled by 2-8-0 or Rogers Ten wheelers 4-6-0. A coach, combine, baggage and maybe post office should be my heavyweight consist on the Del Monte. Am I correct there about this classic train consist? I want to run a short WP mixed train out of Oakland or Frisco. What do connaisseurs have to suggest here?
TOM, for contest purposes I say 1234 as the number of post by our undefatigable host.
Nick, no comment on John Hiatt's citation? How about the passing away of one of blues great, Clarence Gatemouth Brown last sunday? I saw him once in Montreal way back in the 80's. He was evacuated from New-Orleans but didn't survive as he was in terminal illness. Goodday all.

Good mor'n Y'all.
What the H - - -! [censored]I will have a beer. I do not want the rumor to get around that I am a tea toatler (did I spell it right?). After all it is 5 PM somewhere in the world.

The mayor of N O moving to Dallas is their gain and our loss. Another reason why we moved from Dallas city to Cedar Creek Lake 2 1/2 years ago. Cedar Creek Lake, being 65 miles southeast of Dallas, is not on the A list of the Al Quida so we feel a little safer. Also the taxes are significantly lower. No city or county hospital tax which is about 1/3 of the tax bill in Dallas. [:)]Yes, the ride in is a tear, however I only have until March 31 when I hang it up. I did get into a van pool that leaves about 6 miles from my house at the lake. The van costs about $140 per month with the variation being for gasoline. I figure that my Pathfinder that gets 16 MPG would cost $500 per month for gasoline PLUS wear and tear on it and me. Now I just sit, drink my coffee, relax, look out the window, and talk. Leave the driving up to someone else.

We are leaving tomorrow about noon for a 2 1/2 week business trip to Europe and Africa so hopefully I will be able to get one more post in before I leave. Do not know the availability of internet on the other side of the poond. If it is available I will try to communicate, if not you get a respit from my babbling.

On the TRAINS forum there is a thread regarding train brakes. One of the contributers, and engineer, added a link to a full discussion of brakes. It is well worth reading.

Better get back to work now.

Cheers,

Mornin' Guys! I see Chris and *** have checked in. Thanx, Chris for participating in the Contest - you're in with 1234 for your guesstimate!

Another jaunt to Merry Old, I'd say you should have a British accent by now! That'd be a hoot - West Virginian turned Texan speaking the King's English. [yeah] Right! [swg]

Hope you have the chance to interact with us from across the pond, but if not - we'll be here, along with the SUMMARIES when you return.

Chris Wish I could help you out with the WP info .... that would more than likely be an area of expertise for passengerfan Al or West Coast S Dave both who are temporarily away from us ....... I do have something for you, however .... stay tuned! [tup]

And oh [yeah] Dalwhinnie means meeting place in Gaelic. But for drinking purposes, it is a fine malt beverage known as Scotch. Here's your double ...... [swg]

What kinda pain [?] Hopefully nothing to do with your recent malady. Geesh!

Catch ya later and remember these famous words: READ THE SUMMARIES one and all!

Good morning everyone. tom I'll nab myself a coffee and a summer sausage sammich before I head into work. Oh and a round of whatever for the rest of the crew. Thanks for the near win pize however I think I'll let leon enjoy the day / nite in the shed.[:O] As to your new contes let's see carry the two diveide by the unconfirmed [alien] Boris sitings subtract coffee shop and BYOB appearances ummm 815 [:D] Ted You are preety much samck on in your minds eye snap shot of that steeple cab. It was home built with EE running parts. I have a book called On a Streak of Lighteneing It's a rundown on street railways and interurbans of canada. We still sell them at the museum if you are interested let us know. Anyhow pictures of said steeple cab and the funeral car are in the book. As to the curved siders they we double pole double ended controls ( no loops on NS&T ) the only other oddity is that the entire NS&T city and interurban districts had interurban wire height 221/2 feet so all the city cars had plateforms fitted to raise the poles to reach the overhead. BTW thanks for adding the comments to your layout pics should make everyones reading / viewing easier.[tup] Nick Thanks for the phtot site visit. The old layout pictures are not entirly mine that was a club's layout I belonged to the scenery in question of the pictures was some work I did do there. I snapped the shots before the " big tear down " Standard old school hard shell scenery there. On the new home layiout I'm building it will be on pink foam insulation board. In a week or two I'll be adding some preproduction pictures to the site. *** Have a safe flight hope everything goes well and unremarkable for you. Tom appreciate the classic fallen flag segments. I'm very out of the lop as to knowledge of the western roads but theses have made for interesting reading.[tup] any how I'm [i]or/i] to work TTFN Rob

G'day Rob! We're used to seeing you 'round here very late in the evenin' ...... appreciate your stopping by! [tup]

[yeah] The Fallen Flags idea seems to have flicked a few switches 'round here. Wish I could get the pix sent along with 'em. There are three volumes in the series of books called, Classic American Railroads by Mike Schafer. They are well worth it ... some fantastic pix, and even better info. Highly recommended for anyone's railroadin' library.

Email received and responded to! [tup]

Good Afternoon Tom How about a CR and a round for the house.
Chris asked about the Del Monte consists under steam . The train generally consisted of a Baggage 30' RPO a couple of coaches a diner lounge and a parlor car during the heavyweight period. The SP generally assigned a Pacific or ten Wheeler to the train. Must run for now feel like a kid again having homework at my age.

G'day!

Glad it worked for you, Chris ..... I'm assuming your reference to me has to do with the Fallen Flag Post for WP

Wish my requests were so quickly addressed by the regulars 'round here! [%-)]

Figured if anyone knew, Al would! [tup]

I found a picture of a WP steam loco taken in 1940 at Sacramento. It is the westbound Feather River Express, however, the angle is not very helpful in determining what type of loco nor the number of passenger cars - however, looks like a baggage, an RPO and 3 or 4 undetermined heavweight cars.

See ya!

Good afternoon all: Not used to seeing the sun on the west side of the building, but have been teaching a class all day. Anyway, round for the house as usual and quarters for the jukebox. Think I'll play one of my faorites, "Red Necks, White Sox, and Blue Ribbon Beer." They just don't write 'em like they used to.

My compliments to posting re Fallen Flags. Herewith something from my MP collection - 1932 vintage ad for the MP's Sunshine Special.

The Sunshine Special Still Leads to and From the Southwest, Mexico-California.

Again! The Missouri Pacific Lines Gives the Southwest an Improved Service.

Now Faster - Much Faster

The Sunshine Special retains its supremacy as "Leader of the Fleet" of fast, dependable trains between St.Louis-Memphis and Louisiana, Texas, Mexicom Arizona and Southern California.

A further reduction in the schedule of this internationally famous train, on October 30, brings the North, East, Southeast, and Mississippi Valley in closer communication with the Great Southwetsren Empire.

On your next trip to or from St.Louis-Memphis and the Southwest be sure your ticket reads "Via Sunshine Route."

Missouri Pacific Lines - A Service Institution.

The 1932 consist for the WB Sunshine was a complicated one with lots of switching of cars en route. Take a look at some of the interline sleepers. God help you if you got off the train somewhere to buy a newspaper.

G'day coalminer3 Nice - really nice! That's quite a compliment and complement to the MoPac Fallen Flag Posted on page 106. Different eras, but nonetheless a trip back in nostalgia ....... [tup]

Just the way the ads were worded surely makes it clear that there was keen competition going on for the passenger's dollars. Fast forward to today with the way the airlines do business, and it's very evident that they could care less - for the competition, so to speak, has been greatly diminished thanx to regulations for things like hubs, paired cities, and fares. I liked it better back then ....

Catch ya later and thanx!

By the by - sure wish you'd particfipate in our CONTEST .......

Evenin' Nick[C=:-)] Suprised that you'd be in the kitchen tonite ..... Wednesday's we normally don't serve dinner [dinner] [swg] But, dedication is something not to fool with! [tup]

Your Emails have arrived and on first review, I'd say they should upload nicely. The process for me is to transfer them to my hard drive - use my photo program where needed - then upload them to the cyber album. WIll tackle that in the 'morrow. Not a problem for me .... let's just say if we ever meet up in a real life situation, I'll have sufficient brew for the rest of my days (daze)! [yeah]

Your comment regarding the headline in your local gazette regarding the Titanic makes me wonder how present day media would handle it. They'd be delighted to be the first to conclude that the Captain was at fault (which he was) .... I can just hear the cable news "wonks" now ..... Coming to you live from the frigid north Atlantic, survival for some, drowning for others - but first a message from our sponsor ........

Got in a "black rage" (your term) just a couple of days ago with an absolute jerk at our local Pharmacy. Seems he couldn't provide the phone number of the place, since he wasn't the one waiting on me! Back up ..... I turned in a prescription for my wife .... there was a need for the prescribing Doctor to be reached by phone for clarification .... I needed the Pharmacy number to give to the Doctor so they could straighten out what needed to be clarified ...... the lady Pharmacist who waited on me was otherwise engaged when I asked for the phone number - Idiot boy received my wrath (verbal) - when he came across rather offensive, he soon changed his tune when he noted that I wasn't about to put up with his BS any further. I'm 67, but I'd wipe the parking lot clean with his butt .... End of story. Doesn't happen very much - in fact it's been years since an explosion like that occurred. Must've been just the combination of negativity filling up my head these days (daze) ... OR just that my tolerance for rude and inconsiderate people has a very low threshhold ....... [#offtopic] Drinks on me! Boris Ring the bell, and ring it loud!

Glad you like those Fallen Flag Posts - check out coalminer3's latest ... good stuff! [tup]

Cheers to Master Robin! [yeah][wow] And good health to Mom & Dad! [swg]

Catch ya later!

G'nite Nick Here's the scoop on those smiles:

The smilies that are contained on other web sites, such as the one I use for Awk require a bit of doing:

(1) right click any smilie you see on the thread that aren't Kalmbach's.
(2) scroll down to Properties and click on it
(3) locate the URL and highlight it, then copy it
(4) close Properties screen - click OK
(5) paste your URL in your Post
(6) insert [bracketed] img before URL and [bracketed] /img at the end of it - with NO SPACES between the [bracketed] img and URL or URL and [bracketed] /img
(7) use the Preview reply to check on whether it's runnin' correctly. If not - recheck the steps .......

You can find the smilies at: http://www.railroadforum.com/forum/faq.asp#smilies
Scroll down 'til you find 'em.

A day's drinking for each pix! Awwwwwwright .... let's see - if I reduce that down to hours, and then only spend about 4 hours for each drinking session, why this could stretch out for a bit of time, eh [?] [swg]

As always, some classic stuff in your narrative - unfortuantely, I'm about outta gas and will give it a bit closer scrutiny in the 'morrow!

Thanx for your continued support of "Our" Place .... we're a strange lot, but we sure do enjoy ourselves! [tup]

Leon the Night Man has the bar .......

Later!

Good evening again gentlemen and [alien]'s Tom Thanks as aslways for the quick email responce a suitable reply has been made. [tup][:D] I agree that I had a fairly interesting higher math equasion for most likley not guessing your correct post count but afterall mathmatics is not my favourite friend.[:(!][xx(] I'm at a loss to why my photobucket accounts not working for you I shall investigate, for me I made a shortcut to it in my favourites on my pc so I'll look and see. Any thoughts that you may have reguarding it's malfunction are surely sought. Nick That is a good idea about using the NO trolley line to bring in supplies but from what I understood the lines are land locked away from regular rail. Also the lines themselves are likley heavilly damaged aas they were in the heavilly flooded areas from my understanding. Mind you *** is right all the authentic Pearly Thomases should be easily fixed by drying them out and lubricatinf the clones are probably now basket cases. Well gents I'm away see you all tomorrow. Hi Tom and all.

I was about to call in last night when we had a bad T-storm and then lost power .

If there is any left can I try an Iron City beer if not one of Nick's Ram Rod bottles will do nicely. For a very short while Ram Rod was available on draught it was wonderful after being only available in our area in cans

Thanks ROB for the info on the subs. Chile was the country I could not bring to mind.

*** Have a safe trip and say HI to ENGLAND for me[tup].

The fallen flags and the follow up by the REGULARS is superb before the lights went out yesterday I was following the MO-PAC lines on a Praries East and Ozarks railroad atlas. COALMINER3 and PASSENGERFAN thanks for the consist info. Has NICK told you about the CALEDONIAN SLEEPER and its consist[?].

Very much looking forward to your pictures NICK
[yeah].

TED I am working on the SKITTLE descripion(It is easier to play it than describe it)

For the compition TOM can I say 900 and can you let me know about the Midland trip.

Good late nignt Rob and Pete ......... A night made for Insomniacs! [tdn]

Pete Thanx for participating in the CONTEST - you're in with 900! [swg]

Only one more guesstimate needed in order to guarantee a winner on Friday! Geesh, with 14 guys (actually 13, since West Coast S Dave is away...) you'd think geting 6 wouldn't be tough ...... Not![%-)]

Rob My guess regarding your photobucket site is that when you set it up, you may not have checked the box for allowing others to view your contents. Pehaps you should go back to account options to ensure the make public block is checked ..... just my [2c] worth.

Pete The Midland idea needs coordination with earlydiesels Dan, for I'd want to ensure that he'd be working during the period of the visit. Sounds like you're interested - awwwwwwwright, that makes 2 of us then - so far. [tup]

Rob Only when the devastation of New Orleans is finally realized, will things like the loss of those clone trolleys be realized. A shame indeed ......

Pete Power failures will do it every time - unless of course you happen to have a generator sitting out in the garage! We do and it saved our bacon (and everythng else!) during our recent 7.5 hour loss of electricity. Never know what you've got, until it's gone, as the lyrics to a song go ....... Enjoy that Iron City, we've got plenty in the backroom! [swg] Rob didn't order ..... so, there's an Iron City for you too! No citation for rule violation tonight .... too tired to blow the whistle! [zzz]

Catch ya in the 'morrow.
