Top o' the mornin' to ye Ted

Thought that was your clunk comin' thru the mail slot! Marbles, eh [?] Well, I'll have to start saving those Crown Royal bags for you too - given that passenerfan Al likes to keep HIS marble collection in 'em! [swg]

In these times and under the circumstances since "911," many a nerve has been frazzled by the drumbeat of the critics for hearings, firings, accountability, level the playing field, mean spirited this or that, end game strategy, multiculturalism, internationalism, bilateralism - ad naseum. It's small wonder that we even speak to one another in civil tones anymore. I pity those without opinions based on nothing more than what they are told by perhaps less than credible sources, many of whom are without the common sense and instinctive reactions it takes to pull a hand away from a flame. Good grief!

Methinks you are a bit too harsh on yourself regarding your modeling skills. Looks to me like quite a bit of labor went into your efforts - a work yet completed. Pictures are fine and it will be interesting to view the progress along the way. Kinda like my S-gauge layout - those pix tell the story from construction materials to landscaping .... It's nice to have the pix, just to remind yourself of where you've been. [tup]

The picnic weather forecast is excellent - comfortable temps - blue skies - and all around good conditions for outside activities. Judging by the turnouts for the combined Canada Day-Independence Day picnic in July, I'd say we're better prepared ..... Boris 'n Leon will be working the kitchen and bar, respectively - Inspector Clueless of the Local Constabulary along with his earstwhile friend and companion, Mr. Doyle, Private Investigator will constitute the security team, and of course, the Gals of "Our" Place will provide the services only they can render! [}:)][:-,] Should be great fun and I'll meet ya under the tree .........[tup]

Good Morning passengerfan Al

I'm astounded - simply astounded! Surely you read the SUMMARY - please say it isn't so! We're CLOSED on SUNDAY's [:(] Only reason I'm in here - as on every Sunday morning - is to clean up and catch up with the administrative work of the business ........... [swg]

Haven't heard of mandated 3.2 beer in this state for decades. Used to be a biggie in many mid-western states, but kinda faded into oblivion ........

Figured if anyone could come up with some meaningful input regarding those McKeen's - it would be you! [swg] Just curious, were the Doodlebugs (as they became known) all patented to McKeen [?] In the progression to the RDC, there were many iterations of self-propelled rail cars that took on similar appearances. Just curious if McKeen had a lock on the design and nickname ........

Enjoy this day of rest and hope to see you at tomorrow's picnic - surely you already knew about it! [?]

Hi again Tom, just checking to see what page we are on and who is close in the standings. Hey passengerfan Al, thanks for the warning. I knew their were variations on Gas Electrics but had no idea there were legions of them just on one road. Finding the particular one I saw (with no ID numbers) will be an excersize in futility. That is if a pic even exists. I have the shell of a Walther's (HO) G.N. protype which I will power (can motor) and try to bring to the appearance of the St.L. & S.F. as I invision it. Thanks again for the "poop."

Tom the place is lookin' good. We should be ready for the "outdoors Set" on the morrow.[tup] I just wanna be sure all of Boris' play things are under wraps before the kiddies arrive tomorrow.[:O] Al may be thinking of Kansas and Oklahoma regarding the 3.2 beer bars. OKLA, as of 1987, still had only 3.2 beer in any public bars and were open Sundays from Noon 'til 1:00 a.m. Monday. Kansas, I believe, went by "County Option" and could be either "wet" or "dry" with each having their preference of beers. That may have changed by now. Mo., always had regular beer to my knowledge and hours varied by counties. I never had a problem finding a beer in Mo. BTW, I meant to comment on your collection of labels before, "outstanding!" Don't know if you ever got to Sam Lurea's in Annapolis, Md.? Something like 60 imported beers but you couldn't buy a bottle of Schlitz if you were the Governor. Okay, I bid you a early good night and I'll bring my Clydesdale horeshoe for tomorrow's competition.[:-^] See ya heute Morgan. Aufwieder sehen.

Hiya Ted

lans are movin' along quite well for the picnic ..... CP will move our private cars a bit closer to the site (our reefer and box car) - adequate provisions will not be an issue - the water slide gets set up early AM - trampoline tents as well. Kids will have a blast .... adult beverages by the tin and we've got six grills that will be operating - ice chests all around the site for soft drinks - we've got it covered.

3.2 was a big thing in Cincinnati for years - may still be. Had in-laws there in a previous life ....... I vaguely recall 3.2 in Missouri pretty much shortly after arival here in 1977 - but seemingly departed scene shortly thereafter. Perhaps someone else from the Show Me State knows more .......

I'll have to add some pix to the beer can album - as I indicated, the shots I posted weren't ready for prime time exposure! [swg] And no, never frequented Sam Lurea's - although there was a red neck joint down that way (Annapolis) that used to be a great place for Texas-style dancing. The Rathskeller in DC had a menu featuring at least 300 different brews - in cans. Can you imagine [?] I visited there a couple of years ago, just for nostalgia sake and was somewhat surprised at the complete changeover to bottled beer. Still have a huge selection, but as wtih lots of things in life, it has changed.

I'm sure Boris 'n Leon will love those Clydesdale horseshoes! [swg] Good idea! [tup] One way to ensure a fighting chance at getting a ringer!

Oh [yeah], not to worry, the dolls are under lock 'n key ....... [}:)][:-,]

Festivities begin at Noon!

Hey Lordhawke Jeff

Just caught your Post before signing off ..... kinda figured you were on the road. Guess this fuel situation is hurting you guys where it really matters!

Don't be misled by that collection of mine - that was amassed in a time 'n place long ago .... I'm rather restricted these days in my intake of brew. Have a couple now 'n then ... but here at the cyber bar - well, I can drink to my heart's content with no adverse situations resulting! [swg]

Hope you're able to stop in for our picnic tomorrow .........

Appreciate your taking the time to check in with us and of course, thanx for the round! . [tup]

G'Mornin' Tom, WOW! Its early ain't it? I better make it a dark roast Folgers "leaded" and one of those Biali's (Bialistok Kuchen) that Heidi Holzem von Phlopen (Mentor Bakery) bakes up to perfection. Just did a "follow up" and "all systems are GO for the "Our" Place annual Labo(u)r Day Picnic. Barndad Doug has kindly brought Apache along for the kiddies to ride and Leon has his Bear costume ready for the wild life "touch and tell." (Did he really skin that thing himslef?]

Gadfrey Daniel! Leon, get the ladder, Boris has 'trampolined' himself up that Elm again.[alien] Nick will hopefully keep him out of mischief from here on in. Tom, you know, we really need our own siding for the Box and Reefer. Hey Lordhawke, good to hear from you. Did you get by Gunns yet? Don't envy you hostling those rigs around in holiday traffic. Say Al, are you bringing the Inlaws along? Earlydiesels and Russell, hope you brought that local B.B.Q. sauce. I wanna compare it with ***'s 'Big D' "Texas Gusher."[^]

Its happening! Folks 'round Texas, Okla., Mo., Kan, Tenn., Colo., N.M., even Ore., are doing all they can to help. The quagmire created by the Baton Rouge bureaucracy and desertion of 200 N.O. cops is being ignored by out-of-state everyday citizens. They don't ask questions. No, hundreds of volunteers travel to their own "staging area" and start working piecemeal; one problem at a time. To paraphrase the Gov. of Miss., he stated: "Don't let anyone get in your way, just come and "pitch-in" wherever you see a problem." Tom, could this be a "All American" comeback?

Okay, hope to see ya's here, the gals will be decked out in their cute (if abreviated) engineer's coveralls, caps and panty hose (careful bachelors).[tup] The Sun is hot, the beer ice cold, eats superb and all games are on satellite. Why be any where else?[:D] Drive polite please.

Good Morning All!

Ted appreciate your attention to the matters at hand so early in the AM .....

A fine holiday mornin' indeed! [tup] I see the workers are ahead of schedule out in the picnic area (just to the right of "Our" Place). When I opened up this AM, there was a bear standing right inside the door - scared the willikers outta me. Turned out to be Boris gettin' ready for the day's festitivites. What a costume - looks like he's ready to devour anything and anyone in sight. That was indeed once a real bear - he caught it over by Can-Am Gorge one Sunday - chased it down, and - well, had him for lunch, so to speak. [:O] I had him change over to a more kid's oriented bear costume - something a bit less realistic. Yogi the Bear is much more like it .... looks fine, Boris! Geesh!

That hook 'n ladder equipment from The Mentor Village Fire Sqaud will remain on site - especially since we've already had one episode with Boris shooting straight up and through the trampoline tent into the old Elm tree. Leon, you'll just have to keep a better eye on him ........ We'll have everything ready to roll just a bit before NOON! [tup][swg]

Changing subjects: My feelings are that the good old American-way will prevail, in spite of it all. What has happened here is that apparently an overwhelming number of us have bought into the notion that government is here to do for us when we can't (or won't) do for ourselves. I'm not downplaying the seriousness of what still must be looked into - there were many glitches along the way to getting the rescue efforts into the stricken areas - undoubtedly so. I'm referring more to the outpouring from our communities across the land to not only receive the displaced, but to care for them as well. Now that's something to be proud of, indeed ........ The media head-hunting has put to the back burner the real life drama and heroism that has taken place since day one of this tragedy. For shame on 'em and I do hope they get theirs one day ......

Ted You did a marvelous job in outfitting the Gals of "Our" Place - never knew coveralls could look so good! Then again, Cindy prefers the coverless kind. Fortunately, she understands that kids will be 'round today ........ [swg]

Gottta get movin' - catch ya later!

G'day Nick

Thought I saw you lurking in the shadows of early mornin' ........ not used to these daylight Posts from Wales! [tup]

Appreciate your taking the time to stop in and ensure all is going well. The kitchen crew is rarin' to go and they'll all be outside from Noon on ..... Oh, I'll keep the bar up 'n runnin' and the pool tables, TV's and Rat's Patoot Room will all be available - but I expect the majority of our customers will be basking in the daylight and enjoying this break from summer's oppressive heat.

Can-Am and CP have arranged for our private reefer and box car to sit on one of main lines out back ..... that's where your extra provisions will be. [tup] Fortuantely, we have a double track main, so regular rail traffic will be routed 'round 'em. No room for a private siding .........

Be lookin' for ya later .......

Good Morning Tom It's early so will start with coffee and a diet pastry from the Mentor Bakery.
Ted asked if I was bringing the inlaws only if they are being BBQued.
I did a little more research on the Doodlebugs and found that in the US alone their were 53 class ones that operated doodlebugs and that does not include RDC's.
I also discovered their were several roads that built their own in Company Shops and their were 68 commercial manufacturers that I was able to find. Some of them built a single example and I suspect it was their prototype and they were lucky enough to sell it to a railroad that needed a branchline unit. I did not include Canadian units as I don't have enough information to draw on. The Doodlebugs operated in every area of the United States and its my guess they operated in at least 48 states. and one territory (Alaska) Only Hawaii makes no mention of doodlebugs.
Will close for now must get ready for the festivities at "Our Place" later.

Mornin' passengerfan Al

That's quite a revelation about the Doodlebugs ..... so, McKeen must have either granted licenses for independent manufacture of them, or never patented it in the first place. Very intersesting ....... Now, where in the world did the term "Doodlebug" come from [?] [swg]

Barbequed in-laws [?] Well, I suppose ........ [;)]

Appreciate your stopping by and we'll see ya out back later on ....... [tup]

Hey Everyone!

The Labor Day Picnic is in full swing .... check out the music comin' from the Tunes Tent ....... Here's one of my all time favorites from Gordon Lightfoot:

QUOTE: Canadian Railroad Trilogy

There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real

But time has no beginnings and hist'ry has no bounds
As to this verdant country they came from all around
They sailed upon her waterways and they walked the forests tall
Built the mines the mills and the factories for the good of us all

And when the young man's fancy was turnin' in the spring
The railroad men grew restless for to hear the hammers ring
Their minds were overflowing with the visions of their day
And many a fortune won and lost and many a debt to pay

For they looked in the future and what did they see
They saw an iron road runnin' from sea to the sea
Bringin' the goods to a young growin' land
All up through the seaports and into their hands

Look away said they across this mighty land
From the eastern shore to the western strand
Bring in the workers and bring up the rails
We gotta lay down the tracks and tear up the trails
Open 'er heart let the life blood flow
Gotta get on our way 'cause we're movin' too slow

Bring in the workers and bring up the rails
We're gonna lay down the tracks and tear up the trails
Open 'er heart let the life blood flow
Gotta get on our way 'cause we're movin' too slow
Get on our way 'cause we're movin' too slow

Behind the blue Rockies the sun is declinin'
The stars, they come stealin' at the close of the day
Across the wide prairie our loved ones lie sleeping
Beyond the dark oceans in a place far away

We are the navvies who work upon the railway
Swingin' our hammers in the bright blazin' sun
Livin' on stew and drinkin' bad whiskey
Bendin' our old backs 'til the long days are done

We are the navvies who work upon the railway
Swingin' our hammers in the bright blazin' sun
Layin' down track and buildin' the bridges
Bendin' our old backs 'til the railroad is done

So over the mountains and over the plains
Into the muskeg and into the rain
Up the St. Lawrence all the way to Gaspe
Swingin' our hammers and drawin' our pay
Drivin' 'em in and tyin' 'em down
Away to the bunkhouse and into the town
A dollar a day and a place for my head
A drink to the livin' and a toast to the dead

Oh the song of the future has been sung
All the battles have been won
O'er the mountain tops we stand
All the world at our command
We have opened up the soil
With our teardrops and our toil

For there was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
And many are the dead men too silent to be real

Check out those lyrics again! Now that sez it all for Labor Day, eh [?]

Have fun one 'n all! [tup][tup][tup]

Hi Tom and all HAPPY LABOUR DAY. sorry LABOR DAY

It looks like the picnic is going well and can I try something exotic out the cooler please.

Thanks for posting the photos they were taken in May this year at the NATIONAL RAILROAD MUSEUM in GREEN BAY WISCONSIN.
The GG-1 is #4890. I have no details on the diesel #106 or the passenger car, no doubt some of the regulars will know more about them.
The leaflet says the AEROTRAIN was built in 1955 and the coaches were converted bus bodies. It says there are two trainsets the other is located in ST LOUIS.

The song lyrics were very good I will pop a quarter or two in the juke and have a good listen
[tup]
Well Tom I ve got to run now hope I can call in later when i get back.

Good Afternoon Tom Guess I'll have y usual CR and a round for the house.
McKeen Patent only covered the shape of his cars and the gasoline Mechanical truck monstrosity that it was. McKeen cars had a knife edged prow not unlike a ship and a rounded stern. lookekee like he took the hull of a ship and turned it upside down and put windows in it. It was only some years later that it was discovered he had it all wrong. If he had had operated it round end forward with knife prow rear it was far more aerodynamic. In any event many companies held patents for doodlebugs among them EMC, GE, Westinghouse, Brill, Mack, St. Louis Car, Pullman and numerous others. In any event UP eventually threw McKeen out after the company went into receivership. The McKeen cars were anything but reliable yet still the UP, and SP put their money into them. The EMC/Pullman cars were very dependable and outlasted the McKeens by a number of years. Look at Santa Fe they had one with 900 hp another with 600 hp both were dependable. Most of the GN cars even wore the Orange and Pullman Greeen scheme with gold stripes. Many built as gas electrics were rebuilt to diesel electrics. Even the Southern Railway had some St. Louis car built doodlebugs powered by Fairbanks Morse diesels that gave years of dependable service and they were capable of pulling three or four coaches if necessary in additrion to the trailers they were delivered with. For short branch lines some railroads even had battery powered cars, knowing the size of WW II submarine batteries these must have been monstrous in size and I wonder how long they lasted before being replaced.Probably were charged nightly before each days run and as soon as they completed their run went back on the charger for the next day. Ingersoll Rand and St. Louis Car teamed up for some of the earliest of all doodlebugs even before McKeen got in the picture. Enough of my rattling time to get on with the festivities.

And the info regarding Doodlebugs gets better 'n better - as in more comprehensive. No doubt any of the guys who've had questions or perhaps required some amplifying info - you've provided it quite well. Thanx! [tup][tup]

Gotta get back to the picnic - by the by - you've saved some money today - there's no one at the bar! Everyone's outside ........ [swg]

Whilst wandering through the fairground earlier,I was struck a violent blow on the temple by a poorly aimed horse-shoe-according to the letters embossed on my forehead, owned by one T.Bear of Fla -ring any bells anyone ??................Right,Good evening [4:-)]TOM,-think these new graphics could really liven things up-or is it only me that can see them...................? general warning-dont go for the "Traditional Carpathian Mountain Dish"---It`s Boris`s contribution, and whilst it does represent an authentic local dish, not everybody wants to eat hedgehog baked in mud...O.K-well I think I might wander over to the music tent-sounds like the "Streamliners" showband limbering up-that bass trombonist looks strangely familiar..........Gonna try and watch that young rock band tonight--The R.D.C`s--understand they rode in all the way from B.C. to be here tonight...........see you next drink[C=:-)]

Evenin' Sir Nick

Sorry about that horseshoe episode. If it was one of those Clydesdale shoes - I'd say your fortunate indeed to have been spared ....... T. Bear of Fla [?] Wonder who that might be[?] [%-)]

Labor Day celebrants are having a blast - which actually will commence once it gets dark! Wish you had been here a bit earlier if for no other reason than to keep Boris in check. He was doing fine as Yogi Bear, then all of a sudden he shows up wearing one of the Gals costumes![?] Don't wanna know ........ Then he tried to catch Awk, thought he'd make a fine dish ........ then ......... it never stops with him! [alien]

Enjoy the festivities!

What ho chaps, back again-nice to see all the locals contributing to the feast, the Can-Am Park Rangers dropped off a haunch of venison, the Mountain Dew angling & social club pitched in a bathfull of trout and black-tooth Ronnie & Paddy the Greek from the track gang brought in a wheelbarrow full of their best roadkill (well, that`s Boris taken care of for a week or two)--right,I`m off to find the smilies--Boogie `til you puke-Whoops nearly forgot to greet ( and more importantly, buy a drink for ) the master of the house--[4:-)]TOM-a splendid party-I suspect it may over-run into an unexpectedly early centennial page bash ( and why not) in which case, may I be the (premature) first to congratulate you on hosting a hundred coherent, lucid, informative and good natured pages of entertainment and information................long may we continue.............Best wishes to one and all, staff have everything under control, seem to have peaked early-large egg-shaped lump on head may be responsible-slow and wandering moonlight mile for me,ENJOY!!! nick[C=:-)]

Yo Nick

[yeah] We had quite a picnic and while things are now settling down to an evening of drinking, dancing and all that they bring - I'd say our First Annual Labor Day Picnic was a success. [tup][tup][tup]

I suspect we'll have some rather slow to start staffi n the morning ...... but we'll get 'round to putting everything back in order.

We're but two pages shy of our 100th as we approach our 5th month of existence on the Forums ....... Couldn't have done any of it without the continuing support and contributions from our hard core of customers. Thanx for the drink and Cheers to you! [tup][tup][tup]

TIme for me to sign off and turn the bar over to Leon the Night Man.

Catch ya later ........ [zzz]

happy labour day evening one and all. managed to make it by for the grand finally of fire works. Too bad about Boris trying to catch that last rocket. Kept mumbling something about if he caught the shooting star it would bring him good luck. I'm sure the skin/hair/fur[?] on his back will grow back, at least the burnt hair smell is outside the bar and should dissapate quickly.[XX(]. We had a good trip ( minus the hideious fuel prices ) Tom wonderfull party here's hoping for a repeat next year [tup] Ted It was a pleasure to post the pics you sent along, and I agree with Tom, the work is quite good[tup][:D] I'm still endeavouring to get a couple more up for you as well.Nick Fire when ready on those questions I'm more than too happy to attempt to help you out. pwolf &Tom Once we get them fully Canadainized ( air conditionong and polar cap operational ) the Victoria class should serve well for our lil navy. None of them have much sea time on them British or Canadian, they were built in the eighties and then put on a shelf . I suppose that the US did have piles of subs available but our navy wasn't funded trained or politically willed to operate nuclear powered vessels. We can refitt and work on the boats we have which is cheaper than sending boats to the US for refits and upgrades. Probably is pride, but pollitically we tend to want to keep as much work in our own shipyards as possible. Had we bought nuke boats that wouldn't have been an option . Al While out and about in our travels I've come accross a couple of old heavyweights in excursion service up here in ontario. Have a peak at this url www.pstr.on.ca This is a little excursion road running on the remainder of what was the London and Port Stanley Radial electric line. They are a neat little group/ museum take a peak. Well gentlfolks and [alien]'s I've got unpacking to do and posts to catch up on, so I'll see everyone tomorrow. Rob

Hi Rob

Back so soon! Good to see ya .... [tup]

Only have time for a couple of quick responses as I want to get the Summary out and then hit the sack! [zzz]

Picnic turned out well .... given that many were away for the long weekend; sorry you missed it. Next year [yeah]

Regarding the subs - I was referring to diesel boats in the U.S. inventory - not nukes. Moot point .... doesn't matter.

Thanx for the URL on the Port Stanley Terminal RR - I'll check it out more thoroughly in the mornin' [tup]

Good Morning Tom Just time for a quick coffee and one of those diet goodies from the Mentor Bakery.
Rob the two passenger cars 51 and 52 were what were originally known as Canadian Flyer coaches built for the CN pre WW II. Those cars were so well built some lasted into Via. CN certainly got their monies worth from those cars. I see their other passenger carrying cars are rebuilt cabooses, this is similar to those found here locally on the Sierra Railroad. Those on the Sierra were rebuilt in Oregon to passenger car standards and are popular on short excursion runs.

Mornin' passengerfan Al

That's an interesting site that Rob provided for the Port Stanley Terminal Rail - www.pstr.on.ca - really worth checkin' out. [tup]

May I inquire as to what reference you use to find the history on passenger cars like 51 & 52 on the site [?] Also, I know from my experiences trying to keep track (no pun intended!) of RDC's listed in my RDC Rail Diesel Car book since publication really becomes quite involved. What do you use for passenger cars in terms of updates to your library of info [?]

Catch ya later and thanx for checking in this AM! [tup]
