Why did railroads in the South refused to call the 4-8-4s Northerns.
Probably because they had their own visions for their power, and not those of the Northern Pacific way up there in the north. Their own culture, their own state history, their own corporate benefactors and heroes, their own named mountain ranges...that sort of thing. Identity is important when in a competitive market. Brand loyalty equally so.
