This one for NDG: because it has C. P. R. With the periods!

CPR Rolling Stock

Caboose "Van"

3015 Conductor's Van. One of the earliest styles of caboose used. Note C.P.R. the correct way with periods.

History of this one-of-a-kind van.

This one for Penny:

Two views Ohio Central 6325 (ex GTW 6325) backing down preparatory to excursion.

Never heard that version of 'Alberta Bound' before, thanks Wayne!  And 'The Maple Leaf Forever' still is a sort of national anthem up here.

Here is Her Majesty and Prince Phillip "Alberta bound" in 1951:

And what would red and white flags mean, perhaps a Extra running backwards?

'Dude, in the case of that  red and white flag it means...

"We're strong, we're proud, get your butt off the line, we're comin' through!"

Can you imagine an ad today with a Mountie, in uniform, holding a brewski? Whooo Boy, never ever gonna happen.

Looks like they finally blew up the South Bend brewery about 3 months ago.

Suspect the "logical" way to get Drewry's actually back in my hand will be for Frank Manzo to sell the brand back to the recently-rejuvenated Iron City Brewing Company that originally sold it to him.  Or at least license it back and use them as a contract brewery, as those folks in Monroe seemed to have insurmountable problems scaling up production...

Meanwhile -- we need to lobby to get Black Douglas back!

(There are still plenty of legitimate Canadian beers available for the obligate toasting and perhaps singing later today!  Should we agree on a common time, adjusted for time zone, that we all hoist our mutual glasses/binkies?  I'll let the Canadians decide what that should be.)

Many happy returns of the day!

I'd suspect even back in those days a Mountie seen in public with a nice, cold, frosty one would find himself standing in front of a superior's desk with his heels locked!

But we have to remember that ad was aimed at an American market, and nothing says "Canada" to an American like a Mountie!

The BEST Canadian beer I've ever had, never mind that, the best beer I've ever had PERIOD was a brand out of Saskatchewan called "Trapper."  Man, that was good stuff!  I'm informed it's no longer made.  That's a damn shame!

I wish we could get Shenley's "OFC" down here, not a beer, but damn good whiskey!  Lady Firestorm's dad only brought it out for Christmas and other special occasions.  He said "OFC" stood for "Only For Catholics!"  Wink

No matter.  Later on today I'll pick up a six-pack of Moosehead or Molson Golden and toast the lads that took Vimy Ridge and Juno Beach.  Damn good soldiers!

Like this young fellow.  Remember him?

Well that's very nice of you Overmod. How about 1:00 Eastern DST, which is 11:00 here ( we do not have DST in Sask, farmers say no!).

That's eight minutes from now ... and technically, early in the day for beer.  But who stands on ceremony at times like these?

Just happens I have a black and tan available, fit for purpose, and to be discarded appropriately after the toast, to see no lesser purpose...

I am honoured to offer toast to Her Majesty, Head of the Commonwealth and Queen of Canada. In so doing, I am deeply mindful of Her Majesty's long and tireless service to the Commonwealth and its citizens.  As Head of the Commonwealth she embodies the family of nations and the values expressed in the Charter that has been collectively endorsed not long ago.  Her example of dedication and selfless service inspires as all Canadians strive to build societies on the principles of respect, inclusiveness and dignity.  In 1947, she famously vowed that her whole life would be devoted to the service of the Commonwealth.  She has more than honored that vow. And for that, on behalf of all Canadians and indeed, of all citizens of the Commonwealth, I thank her.

I now ask you to rise, charge your glasses and join me in a toast to Her Majesty the Queen. Ladies and gentlemen present - the Queen of Canada, Head of the Commonwealth!

Happy Canada Day everyone. Flintlock, thanks for the link.

Here are a couple of videos I thought appropriate for Canada Day.

The first one is of CPR 2816 climbing out of the South Saskatchewan River valley at Medicine Hat, AB. Without diesel assistance. Doing the job it was built to do during the 1930's on crack CPR passenger trains, before it was transfered east.

My Dad's first station was at Hatton, SK, 37 miles farther ahead from where the video stops. It should also be noted that I rode a train up that hill before I ever rode in an automobile, in April of 1954. The hospital was close enough to the Medicine Hat station that my parents walked over from the hospital.

https://youtu.be/WHR4C9GgiP8

The next video is of families enjoying the mini train at Bowness Park west of my place, here in Calgary.

https://youtu.be/8TT9heLYjfE

I'm sorry I missed Overmod's toast.

Once again, Happy Canada Day to Miningman, NDG, SD70dude, Lenzfamily, Ulrich, and Tatans; who like NDG and me was always big on periods in C.P.R.

Overmod-- Sorry about that. It is kind of early for a beer, actually crossed my mind at the time but I was thinking as if it were a speech or something to the enthralled masses gathered outside.

I opened up a Pilsner. That's an actual name of a brand up here. Very popular, people ask for a "Pill" or " get a twofour of Pill".

It made an appearance in SD70Dude fav movie ' Fubar'.

Also has and always did have a very funky rendition of the Wild West in the old days on its label, including, of course, a train, native folk, tepees, covered wagons and more but all kind of cartooney and juxtaposed. People try to figure it out ... for years! Google it yourself for a clearer picture.

Its a real 'hoser beer' .. very acidic. Thanks for the toast. The Queen is not such a big deal anymore and I think in the fall neither will be Justin.

Canadians now open with something like this, depending on where you live-- " We are reminded and grateful that we are upon the ancestral lands of the Cree and Metis Nation under treaties 6,8,9, 14,and 19". It is almost like a Monty Python skit.

Bruce/Agent Kid-- That is quite the curve, with a lot of twists to boot. Just when you think the train is gone here it comes back again...and again. Thanks

gmPullman and Firelock-- Thank you.

Overmod, I just loved that clip of the Northumbrian pipes, lovely tune and expertly played.  Made me think of a sea full of schooners.

Great clip of 2816 AgentKid!  Talk about a head-end crew that knows their business!  Attacking that hill, making it look easy, and with a clean stack to boot!

Bought myself a six-pack of Molson.  Too early for one now, but wait until dinner!

It is already July 2 in Australia. But congratulations to our Canadian cousins: 152 this year?

We appointed a new Governor General yesterday. A former Chief of the Army. He had been Governor of NSW as well, so somebody pointed out since he had already been a Governor and a General, it was good that was now a Governor General.

Today a new session of Parliament is occurring as I write, just across the lake from me. The House of Representatives has been called to the Senate for the formal opening. After a fairly nastly election campaign, the House moved in two rows, Government on one side, Opposition on the other with obviously friendly discussion between the two leaders and most of the members, at least as viewed on TV.

Apart from sharing Parliaments, the relationship between the CPR and the CNR was reflected in Government regulation here of the commercial airlines, where we had a Government owned airline competing with a commercial airline. The result was a pair of aircraft flying from any major city to any other major city at the same time. They could have made a big saving by using only one navigator with his plane leaving first. We even had expatriate Canadians running the Federal Transport administration.

That's correct, the Great White North is 152 years young.

I was on duty earlier so couldn't partake in the toast, until now that is! Beer

Picked up a good'ol twofour o' 'Pill on the way back to camp (we're given'r tonite boys!) , along with some good Kentucky bourbon.  That stuff will have to wait until the 4th, in honour of our American friends.

In all seriousness, I think Her Majesty has been a great influence on her subjects for her entire public life.  A stable rock at the top.  But the monarchy really does not serve much of a useful purpose anymore, and I almost wonder if it would be best to end things with her reign, that is on as high a note as possible.

Prince Charles reminds me of Edward VIII in some ways...

A fascinating story

The station in the picture was replaced by the two storey building we lived the year after that photo was taken. In the storage cupboards there were many documents still there with the original name Forres. This led to the unfortunate situation of the telegraph call sign being "FO". It was finally changed to be "HA" after we left in December of 1956.

There were two ways the railway could close an open station. Either it was not earning a government determined amount of revenue, or it was no longer required for operational purposes. Hatton had long before dropped below the revenue threshold, but it remained open until 1960 with the installation of ABS along the mainline.

Dad said, after he retired, that the hardest shifts he had ever worked as either an Agent or Dispatcher were during the three fall grain rushes there. During the first one in 1954, there were still 8 passenger trains each way a day, counting second sections. Then there were the regular freights and the grain extras. Steam and boxcars, of course.

To add to the fun, there is very little water out there. The laws of physics do not respect train class or directional superiority. You had situations where Ten-Wheelers on grain drags scooped crack passenger trains, to make sure the right train made it to the nearest water tower, at the right time, all governed by train orders.

Near the end of her life Mom said, despite how it might have looked, that it might have been the nicest place she ever lived, because of the people there. George Sept, mentioned in the article, would call my parents periodically until he passed.

Thank you Peter. Yes 152 years, as the Dude says. Third oldest freely elected democracy in the world.

Glad to see your a Pil fan Bob. Can't get more Western and Canadian than that.

Have a bottle of Blantons bourbon whiskey in the unique bottle with the horse and jockey on the top. Bought that >15 years ago and have a sip very rarely but 4th of July it makes it appearance. 5/6 gone now, almost time for a replacement. Hope I can order this at the liquor store, 'cause it won't be on the shelf at the store. Next bottle will outlive me!

 Stay safe everyone

Now, now, you're not nearly that far north.  Better change the colour of that bear to brown or black.

Was that Davy Crocket cap imported, or have raccoons started to colonize the muskeg?

Those geese really do like to push their luck, I know a bunch of golfers who definately would not slow down if one walked in front of their car.

They're wee vicious beasties too:

That's a beaver hat from Robertsons here in town. The bear is our friendly albino black bear. The Timmies Timbits are from my last trip to Prince Albert, I freeze 'em. Displayed our colourful money for our American cousins to see.

Canada Geese never bother me but they seem to dislike certain people.

You are probably just smart enough to never walk near their nests.

Timmies has shipped everything frozen to the stores for years now (so much for "always fresh"), so you could always hold up the truck and get a year's supply all at once.  I wonder if the Last Saskatchewan Pirate ever tried that...

Anyway, here's another song that describes us perfectly:

Agent Kid/Bruce-- Luv those stories, please keep them coming. Eight passenger trains a day! How have we managed to fall so far? Pecking order determined by water needs.. you see we need to know that stuff. All the steam is gone, all the passenger trains are gone, a heck of a lot of track is gone, what the heck? You sure we won the war?
