Just when I thought there was nothing left to say on this subject...

I picked up a super book on the New York, West Shore & Buffalo at the "Old And Weary Car Shop" hobby shop in Tappan NY on Tuesday this past week.

It's called "Along the Old West Shore, Weehawken to Buffalo," by John M. Ham, with Gene Dauner and Jerry Clearwater.  A 309 page pictorial tour of the line in the classic era, absolutely jam-packed with photographs (B&W) of the line clear from (as stated) Weehawken to Buffalo, razor-sharp photo reproductions with great commentary.  ALL the stations are in there, plus a cornucopia of shots of motive power ranging from 4-4-0's up to and including one Niagara. (Niagaras usually weren't seen on the West Shore.)  Mohawks, Hudsons, you name it.  There's a brief history of the line in the first chapter, very succinct and with minimal "business-ese" to keep the narrative moving. There's also a good 22 page section covering West Shore electric operations.  Plus a brief color section at the end showing the surviving West Shore trackage today and some diesel action.

Published by the Stony Clove & Catskill Mountain Press, P.O. Box 383, Hunter NY 12442-0383, and priced at $59.95.  Well worth it!

Amazon's showing it at $165, but to hell with that.  Ron's Books is listing it at  $55 and change last I looked.  www.ronsbooks.com

There may be other sources, just Google the title.

No, our "mystery photograph" isn't in there.  I guess we'll never know who's car that is!

Anyway, if you're interested in the old West Shore this is one to grab!  You won't be sorry, I'm not!

The Old and Weary Car Shop is well worth a visit if you're a model railroader and in the area.  All scales on hand, and located at 25 Old Tappan Rd., Tappan NY 10983.  Phone 845-689-0405.
