Caboose Safety Slogans
Posted by Miningman on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 8:56 PM

Many roads had safety slogans on their Cabeese. Times past!

Here are some from the Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo Rwy

62 a rare bay window caboose. One of the very few in Canada.
Look Around Getting Down Safety slogan

62 was rebuilt at the Aberdeen Car Shop into a bay window configuration in 1967
and 66 was converted the same way in 1968.

It was felt that the bay window configuration would provide better visibility for train inspections.

Van 62 spent a large amount of time in Welland assigned to the Day Port Assignment, while Van 66 was assigned to the American Hoist (X-755). In 1983, vandals set fire to 66 at Kinnear Yard and the gutted remains were sold to the
Port Stanley Terminal Rly. 62 was reassigned to the Amercian Hoist and one of the 80 series vans assigned to Welland.

Note: Each van had a different safety slogan. Others included: 62 Look Around, Getting Down
66 A Man Alert, is Seldom Hurt. 71 A Man With Rest, is at His Best.

While few roads (UP comes to mind) had a variety of safety slogans applied to their cabooses, many had a safety slogan applied.  IHB had "Your Future Depends on Your Safety Today" on its wooden cabooses, Chicago Short Line included "Safety First" in its herald on both locomotives and cabooses, etc.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

The New York Central had a neat one, (sorry, don't have a picture to post) a green late-era caboose with the slogan  "Life is like a baseball game, it's how many times you get home safe that counts!"

Great Northern had 9 safety slogans that were tied to the last digit of the caboose number, so for example all the cabooses whose number ended in 3 got the same slogan.
