PA restoration

I think it is rather a shame to not paint the PA in the scheme these particular units bore with such distinction.

Better yet, let the Smithsonian do as they wish as long as the last D&H PA's can be recovered and restored to operation & repainted to D&H!!

I voted for Chico's road[:)].These units were built for the Santa Fe,and they ran that way for over 20 years.The Santa Fe Warbonnet was the finest color scheme ever worn by a locomotive,and the remaining PA should be painted that way.Also,since this engine will be preserved in the Smithsonion,many more people can identify with the Santa Fe scheme than the Delaware & Hudson.

My vote is for Santa Fe; the classic warbonnet scheme is instantly recognizable to the general public. I'm glad to hear that the PA's have been recovered; (I thought they had been scrapped! [V] ). When did the Smithsonian acquire them, from whom (last I heard they had gone to Mexico), & where are they currently [?] Am I correct in assuming that the Smithsonian will be doing the restoration itself ? Finally, anyone have any pictures of their current condition? Tom

Not a HUGE Santa Fe fan, but seeing such a nice engine in Santa Fe paint could inspire some railfans down the road, as Santa Fe is usually what's in the train set. Not much, but maybe a start.

Only because they've been in D&H livery for almost 40 years.
Doyle McCormack has them in Portland Oregon & is currently restoring one to NKP livery.

The fact that it's the Smithsonian should make the choice an obvious one: preserve the original nature of the item, because that's what museums do. Plus, I saw a possum once...

I would prefer to see the ATSF warbonnet but the PA must be saved.

Don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. They're both restored and sitting in the National Railway Museum in Puebla, about a 2-3 hour drive east of Mexico City.

It's hard for an SP fan to say this, But the Warbonnet is the best, most popular, and certainly the most recognizable diesel paint scheme ever.

I agree with the folks that propose one of each. It is a very difficult question even for a hard core D&H fan like myself as the Sante Fe Warbonnet is so awesome. However, If I must choose one it would be D&H.

I think they should be painted D&H. There are many preserved locomotives painted Santa Fe across the country but few,if any painted D&H.

The one painted for NKP is out of the paint shop. There are pictures of it in one of this month's train magazines. And hasn't one of the ones in Mexico been painted in SP Daylight?

From a museum and restoration perspective, since it isn't for a D&H museum, then it should be painted Santa Fe with its original number. I voted AT&SF.

Yup, number 17. See the photo in one of my posts above. Suposedly the two of them there at the National Railway Museum are both in running condition. I do know that they fire up the engines every two weeks, although they don't move the locomotives.

(Note: I edited my post above to show the photos of the two. I had reorganized my railimages album which changed the photo addresses.)

I say Santa Fe, for all of the reasons mentioned. However, my personal preference would be to have both PA's restored into the same paint scheme and be preserved as an A-A set.

well, doyles NKP bluebird PA will be a runner, he repowered it with a 251 from a retired Alco diesel he had. The Smithsonian's unit will be mounted and stuffed, either paint scheme would be nice, there are already a couple of units in warbonnet colors so a steamliner in D&H colors which the styling is based off of the warbonnet in styling. Atleast the other two are restored and running and in a musuem rather than scraped. Cheers Mike

You're missing a road...

When the New Haven's PA's were scrapped the trucks were recovered and supposedly put on the units in Mexico...

I vote for reworking the body, removing the DB's, and painting it New Haven Green and Gold or Hunter Green/Warm Orange!!!

None of the above.. Alco demo colors or the 1947 AFT scheme, one in SP bloody nose would not be too shaby, we have a perserved Daylight E unit, but the bloody nose seems to have been forgotten.
