LIRR MP-54
Posted by Bob.M on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 1:14 PM

My best guess is that the following is an MP-54. Picture was taken in the mid fifties. Note the protruding lights on the roof.

This one, from the same era, shows an MU without the protruding lights. Is it also an MP-54?

Hi - my recollection is that there were sub-group designations that went after the "MP54" designation to differentiate between the different build dates, equipment, configurations, etc.  The railroad-roofed car is unmistakably an MP54, though I couldn't tell you if it had a sub-group designation on the Long Island.  Is there a "faction" within the PRR society that focuses on the LIRR?  Perhaps they have equipment diagrams or rosters that would help you to get the correct designation for each of these cars.  Hope that's of some help - have a great weekend!  Art

Here is a great site on the LIRR.

I am originally from Rockville Centre LI NY and my first train ride was on the LIRR around 1958.

I dreamed of being an Engineer by playing in the LI Steam Engine they had at Salsbury St park back in the 60s. Also in the 60s we lived less than a block away from the LIRR in Baldwin.

Another place where I found some info I found valuable is www.trainsarefun.com.

We lived 1 block from the LIRR also. I rode the train to Brooklyn from 1952 to 1960. My father actually let me run a GG1 for a short distance in Sunnyside Yard. That was a bit scarey for me, as I knew how powerful it was. I recall it had a device to spray sand on the track in front of the wheels to avoid wheelspin.

I got a tour of Sunnyside when i was in the Cub Scouts, but I sure didn`t get in the cab of a GG-1,my all time favorite electric engine.

I can still remember how badly I wanted a Lionel GG-1 set as a kid,but there was no way my parents could afford that one back then. A kid in my class had one.

I had to be content with my little scout engine-LOL.

My PA Technical and Historical Society member no is 4913 so I consider that GG-1 my personal favorite.
