Just wanted to call by, leave a round for the house - say I'd had enough time to at least scan through some recent pics - and report back that a successful UK meet up with the Wolfeman happened yesterday!
I'll have a pint of Pete's favourite tipple Batham's and relate the fact that I met up with Pete - we checked out 3 excellent pubs over the course of the afternoon and evening - linked by train of course, linked up with Pete's superb bunch of hometown mates from Rugby and generally toasted Our Place.
Tom, without giving too much away, Pete has a modest item to go behind the bar in Our Place from myself - for delivery to you in due course. This was left stashed in the famous black bag yesterday so hopefully ti will make its way back to the US.
Pete particularly wanted me to apologise for lack of visits recently - he lost his glases somewhere and although he has now resolved this - I think it precluded his attendance!
I also enjoyed hearing stories about the Our Place re-union activities - and a generally good time was had by all!
Sadly Nick was unable to make it - but I guess you juts can't have everything! Nick - I just read your e-mail today which I had not been able to view due to reasons Pete explained + IT probs when I got back - but your message was recieved!

Wednesday, a quick stop during a short break.
Tom – 10 days of sunshine in Seattle and Portland! Wow!Yes, I feel kind of sorry for Boris, but he knows how to take care of himself. That is a good sign, the paint on your front lawn! If they have started to mark your lawn they might even consider to do something about your problem this year! Vito’s office is actually a Swedish Air Force radar central. I spent some time there during my military service in the 60’s. Thanks for the photos of the Can-Am Railway! A lot of traffic! CN, CP, VIA, and Amtrak!Nick – 12 oz Sirloin with all belongings sounds very good!!!I have also heard that story about defrosting the chicken! The windshields on the X2000 are actually manufactured in England and they were tested by firing dead chickens onto the windshields. I saw a video of the tests many years ago. I found your list of trains and movements interesting. I’ll find your track plan (I’ve saved it) and check all movements!Fergie – I guess everything is indicating that those double bulbed headlights existed in the 40’s! Interesting, they look more like being from the 50’s in my eyes. Allan – Yes, I am looking forward to the day when the Coffee Creek car will be done and ready to roll! Looks very nice! I used to go bird watching in the old country, that’s the reason I looked up the Godwits! CM3 – As I mentioned to Fergie, I now believe that the 2 bulb headlights came during the 40’s. Just a quick visit to the bar I,m afraid, as DL said the black bag done its worst on my reading glasses this time and managed to lose them twice, the second time I think for ever. I have found some glasses but they don't seem very good at looking at the puter screen for too long, so I will have to catch up when I get back.
Met Dan yesterday and it was a real great time, although the Great Western had run out of Bathams the Holden's was on top form. It was really good to meet Dan and I am sure the regulars would have enjoyed the pubs too. I think if Tom and Nick had been there we would have still been at the pubs, hopefully the photos I took will come out OK.
Really looking forward to reading the posts when I can properly.

Tom-Great photo's of the Canam as always.I've seen a couple of the new Bachman PCC's they look quite good,and it wouldn't take up too much display case space.
I don't think I would want to feed Canada's to anyone even prisoners ( still better than they deserve I suppose ) I've always refered to them as flying rats seing as how common they are.They would make for easy marksmanship for the hunters I would think as the stupid things tend to stay on the ground.
Shane-Awfull story about the real coal train rolling downhill.I suppose the only silver linning is that no one was hurt.We had a similar incident here in Brantfors about four years ago. The local switch job dumped two 100 T covered hoppers full of Kitty Litter down an emabankment and onto an automobile salvage yard.The upside is the salvage yard got some work,and a new fence.
Tom I'm very glad that I've never gone to those dives drinking establishements with you in NFLD,beer goggles or no,the clientel does not seem to be at all appealing.

I do have to work on Sunday unfortunatly,when does your train come in As to LHS's you are in luck the one at the station is open.My Buddy Scott owns it,he is closing down though but everything in it's 30% off.They open at twelve so depending on when you get there you'll be able to partake.I'll give you cell a try in case you don't see this before you leave.

Allan-I haven't had any problems accept the one day earlier this week with the log in's. The disruptions seem random. I wonder if Pete's black bag has a compatriot at Kalbach's computer centre.
Nick-Yes it's not supprising that the model companies tend to raid the archieves or the displays of museum's. Much easier to get the photo's and measurements they would need I should think.
You will find that CN tends to have many such incidents like you described at Cochrane.The think they can run their giant loco's and 100+ car freigts everywhere at normal track speed,They don't get that not everyopne has up to date rail and ties.Case in point all the fun they have had in BC on their BC rail trackage, many a train loads gone into the drink in BC since the takeover.
Good idea to spread the pearls of MR wisdom , we do have a lot of silent lookers,so your point is well taken.

A beautiful day here in mid-continent USA for the most boring drive of the month. 110 miles round-trip, with most of it in Illinois - not the most picturesque.
Figured you'd "jump" on providing us with some details regarding my latest spate of steamers . . . They are fascinating beasts, fer sure, fer sure.
We haven't fired up the furnace ‘n expect to have 2 or 3 more weeks of unusually warm temps for this time of year. Love this twixt air conditioning ‘n heating. Just plain nice . . .

Not trying to make you feel bad, but when I frequented those waterfront saloons in Newfoundland you either weren't around or far too young to walk on your own! Yeah, it was a long time ago in another life of mine. Sailor bars are sailor bars ‘n it really doesn't matter where they are.
When I took Carol to Bermuda some years ago, I wanted to show her some of the places I used to frequent as a poor sailor. One was located very close to where my ships used to tie up in St. George's. A steep hill up ‘n a roll back down! <grin> The bar where we used to drink, brawl, sing ‘n crawl had gone "upscale." Say it isn't so! said I. But it did ‘n all that remained the same was the name ‘n general layout of the joint. Guess when the U.S. pulled the ships out from SAR standby year round, the locals decided to "play" to the cruise ship crowds <which didn't exist back then>. Oh how much fun we had with the Brits ‘n Canadian sailors in those joints . . .

CM3. Very interesting chat about Cartography and Geology surveys. The deer over here are doing the exact same damage on our main mountain ranges and forest areas, it is a bit better these days as they are farming a lot of the deer for velvet and venison exports, they catch the deer by helicopter using tranquilliser guns and nets. Deer shooting makes big money from tourists over here as well.
Dan. Good to see you again, nice to see you had a good meet up with Pete and his Rugby mates in Brum.
Eric. Would love to visit the Coffee Creek car when it`s fully restored too. Fine pic of CN #5529 at StL MOT.
Fergie. A nice couple of brass old time 4-4-0 steam locos` for the MESS RR, you`ll be able to simulate the joining of the tracks at Promotory Point with those.
Rob. Glad to hear your log on hicup was`nt as bad as mine was, it was a very frustrating time back then.
Pete. Great to see you, good to see you had a nice meeting with Dan in Brum. Looking forward to those pix when they are available. Hope your able to get some proper glasses, will your insurance cover their loss?

Tom-First off I gotta say loved the two header pictures you used today.The Selkirk and the Hudson are both personal fav's.I figure "divey" bars are "divey" bars no matter where one finds them.Your're right when you were partaking in the deep holes that sailers imbibe in I was likely a glimmer in some eyes,but trust me I've seen the insides of a few questionable joints,with likley just as colourfull of characters in them.< uh oh >

Allan -Good to see you in again tonight.Yes I'm happy that teh glitch was not too bad.I get hit by it every once in a while.I've not had it as bad as you had been hit since I got the new computer,in my case the old machine just didn't react well to the uploads etc due to it's slow speed.I was also on dial up at the time which lets just say I'm glad that is over with , as soon as the high speed lines were installed in my neighbourhood we jumped at it.I used to stay logged in all the time back then as well,I find that I normally don't have to do that anymore.
Well lets see I think I need another round as my steins empty again. ( Leon must have given me the trick glass again ) Since it's optional toy in train / pikes petrspectives day I'll put up some of the old club layout shots again.

The deer in these parts have pretty much devoured the backyard gardens along with flower arrangements, etc. and have done so for several years. As they get run out of their habitats by "progress," that's to be expected. No natural predators left for the most part. It's a shame, but we're into controlled hunts to rid the subdivisions of ‘em . . . far too many.
Keep talkin' - sounds like your country hasn't been turned upside down <yet>. It's gotten so ridiculous in some circles that no matter what is said, there's someone to be OH-FEN-DED! <geesh> Screw ‘em, sez I - all but six, ‘n save those for pallbearers! <grin>
The fun aspect of the Can-Am layout is that I've been able to meld it with the things we do at the bar, thereby giving it a "life" not planned for. Almost like having an operating layout IN a bar, eh

So, the hobby shop in the Brantford railway depot is still there. But not for long as I gathered from your remarks. Has the owner found a buyer, or is simply a close-out ‘n close-up What a great location for a model trains store ‘n I'm happy you took us there.
As an aside regarding remaining logged on to the Forums: One of the "benefits" is that when Kalmbach takes ‘em down for maintenance - routine or otherwise - most times one cannot gain access UNLESS you are logged on. Also, if you have recently cleaned your hard drive ‘n erased the "cookies," then under those circumstances, access may be next to impossible until whatever is going on has come to an end. That's why I've recommended to our crew to remain logged on - no guarantee, but far better-er than the alternative. Insofar as cleaning your disk goes - try to keep in mind that weekends and late nites are when most problems with the Forums occur . . . a word to the wise.

Nick - No pictures made it over here (at least to my computer - all I had was large white spaces. We have been having all kinds of strange things happening here, though. Latest one was when they renamed printers yesterday - this caused a lot of our equipment to just stop. The lannites appeared (including some well up on the food chain that I had not seen in awhile. We had a laying on of hands, took up a love offering, and eventually things got back to where they should be. Like lots of other things electronic, they're great when they work.
Allan - Hunting is very big business in this part of the world. Pumps a lot of $ into the economy and feeds a lot of folks over the winter. Maybe the kitchen can do a load of "venison surprise" for the darts tournament - find an antler, win a prize!
OSP - Nice layout shots. I enjoyed the first one with the freight and passenger equipment. IMHO, I think Pete and the rest of the crew went train hopping by pub!

TOM-Hope the trip was worth the going -hope the pix are starting to give a framework to the descriptions....agree your comments R.E modellers:- don`t care if it`s ultra coarse `scal` or obssessive rivet counting as long as they don`t try and sell it as the `only` method worth following-plenty of space for everyone says I.....Splendid set from the Can-Am once again -whats the gen on that Ont. Carb car ??.......Switcher/cab sets look very snazzy-custom paint ??-enquiring minds and all that
SHANE-Greenwood Mississippi-magic of a name,eh ?--Catalogues-don`t get me started........those W.V maps sound like an interesting read-we could do with something like that locally-Hook anthracite colliery was totally disorganised-barely any records survive -all houses in the vicinity require huge concrete `rafts`to avoid subsidence.....will look out book title -nice one,thanks -previous t/table was an abstract from a 1936 S.R volume but was just too much to deal with

It's really comical regarding the ongoing "challenge" of Pete's Black Bag! I watched him, up close ‘n personal, during our 2007 Canadian Railway Adventure - ‘n he was "in" that bag more often than a bunny into a hutch. Unbelievable. I saw him place an item into it, then expend all sorts of energy trying to find it. I think he averaged .500! <grin> All of that notwithstanding, the man luvs his bag - never travels without it!
We're due for a Missouri sales tax holiday this coming spring for "Energy Star" appliances, including whole house air conditioners ‘n furnaces. So, that's when we'll change ours. They'll be into their 21st year of operation, so best to do it before either one craps out. Just hoping we can get through the winter . . . Nice knowing that if all goes well, they will be the LAST units like that I'll ever have to purchase.
The "Our" Place Galley Crew can do wonders with all kinds of meat. Have your forgotten our Road Kill ‘n Sausage MoSheen!?!?!? Yes, venison will "work" . . . antlers too! <yikes>

Yesterday's trip was my 4-5 week "routine" visit to our nearest military base with a commissary, exchange and pharmacy. Generally occupies 5 hours of time to complete the "mission." A long day, 2 hours of which is on the road in somewhat racetrack conditions. People behind the wheel just seem to be H-bent on killing themselves. Just don't want to be involved with ‘em . . . that's another story! <arrrrrggggghhhh> But, yes - all turned out well - just a long day for my weary, old body. 2001 Volvo finished up at 29.4 mpg - which for that 5 cylinder wagon, ain't bad. Always been pleased with its performance - even if put together in Belguim ‘n owned by Americans! <grin> That's for Eric . . . <uh oh>
Only the VIA Rail SW7 ‘n caboose were custom painted - to my specs. Lawd knows if they're anything even close to reality, but I kinda liked the way they turned out. Good eye!
A looooong story regarding the ‘deadbeat' who was paid to do the job - took nearly a year to get ‘em. Then the state <Kansas> took him to court for snookering so many people . . . Thought for awhile that he made off not only with my money, but the unpainted loco ‘n caboose as well. Turned out okay for me, but not so for many others. The guy had advertised in Model Railroader - but one can just never be sure.
That Ontario Carbonate tank car is properly known as a Kaolin tank car. Mine is an Atlas model and here's some "scoop" to shed additional light: Primarily used to haul kaolin clay slurry for use in the papermaking process, along with many other liquids, the 14,000 gallon non-pressure tank car first built by ACF® in the 1970's adds a modern flavor to any layout. This common tank car can be seen all over the country <Canada ‘n US> and is in service today.

All the wishful thinking regarding the various Lotteries going on makes me wonder what we'd do with such a windfall. Probably go on living the way we have, but of course at the onset there'd be a splurge unlike any others experienced in our lives. Private rail car fer sure, fer sure - huge donations to our Wolf Sanctuary (rescue ‘n rehab facility) and Animal Rescue facility <dogs, cats, small wildlife) - we've been regular contributors to both for years. Then host the Rendezvous of Rendezvous . . . yeah, fun to think about. But the drawback for Moi is: I have to purchase a ticket FIRST! <grin>

Nick was in with quick notes and comments. Greenwood, Mississippi - served by the Columbus and Greenville RR (a fascinating short line) and by the Illinois Central.
Eric - The scenery in your picture reminded me of the old PRR low grade freight line (Columbia and Port Deposit). Their catenary was a little different but the trees and the river - nice shot, sir. Happy retirement!
OSP - The conductor can't understand Pete? I don't think so. I believe he asked him what was in the bag and was amazed that a small package like that could hold so much.
My compliments on the snow pictures - you know I enjoy that sort of stuff. The GTW 4-8-4 is lovely - I always liked the Vanderbilt tenders on those as I think it "balanced" things out.
Kaolin is some of the slipperiest, nastiest stuff to deal with I have ever encountered. The first thing the safety folks tell you is basically, "One hand for you and one for the ship," when you are working around it. You start sliding and you look like a pig on stilts and when you land - yuck! Kaolin, as the blurb suggested, is used for coating in fancy paper such as is used in the National Geographic magazine. I noticed that Atlas is going be selling a tank car that is used in molten sulfur service. We see lots of them around here.
New heating system - we did that abt 3 yrs ago and noticed a tremendous savings in our gas bill (for real). Reminder that I will be offline Monday, but will try and post again later today.

She is just kind of lonely now when Senior Manager Lars can’t stop by every day. Most of my time in the military I spent inside another mountain, not too far from the one in the picture. But I can’t say I thought of it as my home. We were locked in there for a week at a time. It was during the coldest period of the cold war and a lot of incidents happened all the time. The Air Force had to send up planes almost every day to investigate and stop (im most cases) Soviet planes. Interesting to say the least. Hmm, I noticed that Wolfman created his own line when it was time to get aboard the train home! The rest of the people waited nicely in a long line but not Wolfman! Interesting. As in real life, I hardly ever think about what's "in" those tank cars - unless they are clearly marked. But now that I've done a bit o' research on Kaolin along with the elaboration from our WVA Coalminer friend, well - amazing how my thoughts will change next time I look at either <real or model>!
Yeah, I've noticed the "savings" in fuel use over the decades each time a new furnace ‘n air conditioner gets purchased ‘n installed. Just makes me wonder - every 20 years the "savings" supposedly gets greater. However, tell that to those who constantly keep the rates going UP! <barf> It's all about the money! <grin>
Watched the Phillies squeeze out one over the Dodgers on Thursday nite - split screen of course. Finding it more difficult to remain awake for 9 innings of ANY baseball game. Watched a bit o' hockey on cable - surprised to see the Leafs beat the Red Wings ‘n also Boston topping Colorado. ONLY 81 more games to go in another meaningless season - then the REAL competition begins for the 16 who make the playoffs. <triple barf>

Some GREAT news this afternoon. The owner ‘n his lead man showed up to check out the drainage-foundation work that is to begin on MONDAY! Awwwwwwright! I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders with an "end" in sight. Hopefully the END of the Diaper Patrol - the END of being concerned about going away for any length of time without worrying over the possibility of a flooded basement in absentia. Yeah - feels good. <phew> Never thought I'd feel good about parting with such a large sum of money - but, it has to be done ‘n that's pretty much "it."
Filled up the bride's car at $3.13 <rounded> this afternoon after we took in a nice late lunch at Mike Duffy's Pub ‘n Restaurant. Good food, nice ambiance ‘n very close to home. Pete will be surprised to know that there was NO BEER for me. <grin> Hardly ever drink the stuff when out - unless he's along. Wonder why that is Hmmmmm.
