Glad you enjoyed the ramble around W.Wales-delighted to share -agree the passenger numbers are depressing-the first couple of trains up in the morning are reasonably well patronised,as are the last few back down but the rest are mostly pretty thin on the ground-one of the reasons I am attempting to document them whilst I have the chance...
The K.C.S `F` unit is always a delight -I must say I find the A.C.L colours ..startling...although Better a purple train than none at all says I !!
P.S-Accept that foundering is correct,but what therefore is floundering-all sorts of horrible and lurid possibillities occur......I really should seek counselling.....
SHANE-A fellow detail hound (the voices told me so ) -delighted !!-by far the most interest in any picture is the stuff in the corners-especially tantalising are the bits that are either half cut off or slightly out of focus....-R.E the crossover move (unusual enough to be worth recording I felt ) and Amtrak #50-Are there signals in the tunnel to let the drivers know there is a restricted speed situation approaching or is it a regular and known value ??

DAN-Finally got to you mate -Butler Henderson-My 2 pennorth-if there is only one left,keep it in original colours -if there`s more than one have some variations ...Now then-railway hotel-not sure about Manorbier-rarely get across there but will make enquiries-are you sure you are not thinking of the Fishguard Bay Hotel-on the cliff above the harbour ??
Agree about the Whitland box-looks like a converted pigeon loft-although the lever frame inside is in sparkling clean order--- as to the portacabins in the old yard,I suspect the deal is just that--they are portable-the yard there has been a MoW yard for years and has less track every time I pass-Ten years ago there were rarely less than 2 dozen mixed wagons stored there,quite often with a `37 in attendance,at any given time-I suspect it wont be long before it is torn up and operations move to Carmarthen (E) & H/West (W) -these are the only points west of Swansea with any yard tracks at all-and Carm. has had most tracks lifted and seems to have lost it`s last freight service ( pallet vans to a fertiliser warehouse) -Llanelli area-which used to be a labyrinth of crossing and connecting tracks is now just ghosts and echoes.....such is progress,or so they tell me.......
Continuing on the same gloomy note -the boat trains run twice each way (2am & 2pm) usually 2-car units (most traffic is by car ) -when we moved here from Swansea ,in `91,the 125`s used to run to F/Guard for the boats and the last two of the day also ran out to M/Haven & P/Dock for overnight stabling for the first two runs up to Paddington-believe the `dock was the first to go,then they cut the Milford back to Carm. -this may still run-last caught it 4 years ago-sticks in my mind `cos some poor soul jumped in front of it just past Ferryside and I nearly missed my H/Row collection of little sis.....selfish reasoning,but thats what stuck...
Enjoyed the Ian Marchant website-I take your point-stone-head hippy musician train lover living in the wild west ( website for pix-Ceinewydd-Welsh for Newquay-nice little town up by Cardigan)-make a venn diagram out of that and you have a fairly small cross section-am bound to have met him,if not jammed with him at a festival..

What's behind door #1, Boris Ohhhhhhhhhhh, tickets for TWO to the Gandy Dancers Ball . . . to be held at the Mentor Village Seafarers Union 'n Bait Emporium! Pick a gal - any gal . . . it should be a BALL! <grin>
Didn't catch a repeat visit by our "visitor" which may mean "we've been down this road before, Gents! All the more reason to refrain from jumping thru hoops just because someone new "pops" in - it's always the 2nd visit that tells the tale . . .

Nick. A really great selection of pix of H/west and Whitland areas`, the places have changed a lot rail wise since I was last in the area in 1963, great shots of the DMU`s and the station and yards and signals. The AB`s are getting a bit hyper as they play the World Champ Boks team next!
Dan. My posting problem occurs when I go to insert from Word into the paste box, when I press the insert button it goes off line for no reason at all. Great lot of URL`s to all those locos`, they are now in my favourites` list. Can`t remember seeing that GWR hotel at Manorbier at all, did two 6 week AA Gunnery courses` there in 1954 and 1963, used to have a tipple or two in Tenby on Saturdays`.
CM3. You are so right, our winter storms come straight from the South Pole, and boy are they really COLD at times. Had a great laugh at your anniversary joke.
Eric. Need all that AZ dessert heat you sent over at the moment, our 1st winter storm is a doozy. Nice set of pix you posted.

Allan was in - Looks as though you were finally able to get the computer up and going - they're wonderful devices when they work - I had a "steel cage" match with Word yesterday. It's so counterintuitive.
Eric - Here's a caption for your picture, "I said the red button, not the blue one!"
Nick - The tunnel in question (Stretcher Neck) used to be double track but it was single tracked quite some time ago. There are signals at either end but they are for the track rather than the tunnel. For example just beyond the east portal the main goes from single to double track, a branch comes in from the right, and there is also a yard lead as well. So we have a signal bridge, a couple of mast signals, and three dwarf signals; all in sight of each other. The passenger station is in the middle of all of this with a crossover at each end.

What was the story behind the Darin Dream car? Looks pretty remarkable - was it for a TV show?
Nick - I'll have to check on the Manorbier Hotel - I'm sure it is listed in an old timetable I've got. I was aware of the Fishgaurd Bay Hotel, so I was not confusing it with that - so I'll have to check it out, esp in the light of Allan also raising a query about it. Not impossible for me to be confused of course!
I think you would certainly enjoy the Marchant books.
Sadly I'm not enough of a GWR aficionado to be skilled enough to answer your query about the tender.
Allan - your IT problem sounds most frustrating, and hard to fathom - my advice being of little relevance under the circumstances!
Eric - yes DP2 ultimately resulted in the English Electric Class 50 Pete and CM3 were discussing - built in the late 1960s it was a class of 50 production locos as per prev links. Really the last purpose built class of express passenger diesel locos to be commissioned for UK railways.

DL also stopped by - The Dream Car belonged to Bobby Darrin, a teen singer from back in the day who managed to survive and have quite a long career. The car was built for him and was, as you can see, customized beyond belief. He did drive it. The picture does not begin to to justice to the paint which is candy metallic flake - truly a labor of love.

Well then-here we all are ( or some of us-the rest are out gallivanting.....)-got something of a mixed bag tonight -a few classic cars,a tall ship or two-possibly even a train or two-who knows -But first to business-Leon,if you would be so kind:-As it`s fish night I think we should try and raise the standard-lets try a sauvignon blanc with the first course,which is:-crepes stuffed with prawns,scallops,mussels & crab meat in a provencal sauce,topped with a mild cheddar sauce and flashed under the salamander.....
Now then-Boris & Copperkettle-here is your chance to shine-Am just gonna sit back and let you do the bizz-managed to aquire a pair of 10 oz flounders from the market-so here is what you do:-
First,half fill the big straight sided copper pan with water,throw in a crushed clove of garlic,a glass of wine,a half dozen finely chopped shallots, a couple of bay leafs and some fresh basil-leave to mingle on the slowest heat you can manage...
meanwhile ,in another pan,sweat half an onion `til it is clear in a half pound of butter-add a few finely chopped capers-add flour and stir continuously -add a spoonful of english mustard powder,add stock reserved from previous fish days-keep stirring until you have a fine glossy sauce-turn down heat & simmer--meanwhile back at the first pan--add the flounders and gently poach until the flesh is falling off the bones-lift gently out of the pan and serve with a dish of fried potatoes and seasonal veg and coat with the mustard and caper sauce-There you go boys-looks just right !!!! -who said they couldn`t do it

Loved all the classic car shots. The 41 caddy looks like the car H&H drive passenegers to and from the Zepplin barns in ( mind you theirs has a large rotating twin MG42 turret on top,probably removed from an old MK II panzer ) I was looking for the required set of steer horns on the nose of the 76 Caddy must have been taken off for cleaning.

At least better looking!The old Messerschmitt is a classic one! They were pretty common in Sweden in the 50’s! There was also a more powerful version with four wheels. Nick - The Model A with the caravan seems to be attracting a lot of attention from the locals. As Eric mentioned, I remember the ME cars as well - never saw a four-wheeled version of one, though; also a nice picture of our Intrepid Reporter's Rolls.
Eric - Detail shots are remains of third rail shoe and related equipment. NYC had some overhead and a lot of 3rd rail. The interesting part of the Lincoln statue was the sculptor's attention to detail. Lincoln carried legal papers and other documents in his hat. The sculptor included this detail when he made the statue.
Rob - For a Hab - amen! Melrose beats Cherry in the tonsorial dept. for sure as for the outfits, my nod goes to the bald one. I recall going to Hockey Hall of Fame yrs. ago - it brought back a lot of memories of listening to games on the radio on cold winter nights back when the NHL was small and everybody played everybody else many times. There were no teams west of Chicago and you knew all of the players.
OSP has returned from a foray to the western division. Looking forward to an account of your trip. Old People's MTV says that your part of the country is being blessed with some more rain.

Good morning Ruth, I'll have the usual a number three with all the trimmings and the usual large thermos of the BK blast.
Eric-Hmm I hope that if you do gain the RV that perhaps it comes with a crew, that way you could convert it to steam power,it's big enough now so I don't think that dragging around a tender for fuel and water would make much of a difference. Thanks to Nick's photo of the Me car and everyones intrest the Girls are heading over to Stutgart with the largest Zeps to bring two bank ( they want matching sports cars ) They've also been digging into the pile of armnaments that came with the Zeps when they were bought from the Transylvanians,I shudder to think what they may attach to them.
Yes they lowered the poles for the canal crossings. that particular run only ran four times a day to the Port Weller drydocks to change the shifts,they would also send two freight movements aday over it as well.I've never seen closeup shots of the catenery poles but they were a hinged affair of some sort.Glad you liked the rest of the shots .

I remeber the 18 team league,that's about when I started watching ( re allowed to stay up for the first periods )In my humble opinion that's the size the league should have been left at.I kind of miss the old Hockey Hall of Fame, it ws cramped and musty but did it's thing. Don't get me wrong the new one's wonderfull but just doesn't have that close family feel to it.

That Posting problem of yours is really a challenge ‘n mind bender. From the little knowledge I have, it just doesn't seem that one has to do with the other. Meaning your internet connection should NOT have any bearing on what you are typing or inserting here or there or anywhere. At least to my way of thinking it shouldn't. But it DOES!!
There are at least four ways for you to prepare info for Posting:
(1) Type directly into the large "box"
(2) Paste from your WP to the large "box"
(3-4) Call down the icon for Posting above the large "box" - paste from the WP to that small "box" - those icons say "paste from plain text" or "paste from word" - then insert. Your material then should appear in the large "box."
I'm sure you've tried ‘em all . . . just hope you don't give up. We'd miss having you ‘round here - and the TUIs are most favorably looked forward to! <grin>

Tom-Looks like an all ten fingerd type fest has caught you up not that any of us would have doubted that. The Pocket spoke quite good english and was , as one would have expected a true gentleman. I don't ever want to order in Montreal with Pete for some reason though, hearing your description of his control of the "green" language.<uh oh >
It ws funny even into the 80's you would often see the odd CNR piece of rolling stock still with Maple leaf hearalds and the odd green and Gold diesel ( though somewhat tattered )

Nick - very much like the vintage caravan - I bet they are rarer than the vintage cars!
Eric - is that a 3rd rail electric collector pick up shoe on your mystery pic?
Rob - you too will need to read Platform Souls and then you'll understand Pete and myself (not sure I fully follow Nick at times - just appreciate his superb menu choices!!!). Loved that Port Dalhousie pic - great period detail, street cars, boat, vintage buses cars - just superb - where is the actual location of the place and where would the boat have been going to and from? I'm guessing it is Canadian?
Also - is that Spitfire modified for passenger carrying? Nice TTC car shot too - great livery - looks classy in the dark maroon.
Then da Boss is back, with a full round up from his absence - you don't miss much Tom!! - nice pics of that Depot - you statesiders certainly know how to renovate a station nicely - too many of ours just stand in a decrepit state - or worse, just been bulldozed. Glad I was able to get in. Tried to make most of my links just to pics so you can glance at them in a second, but not always the way - no matter - they are there for those who want them - no obligations of course. There's only ever so much time!
Pete - nice A4 shot - I went to the library today to get the OS map that covers the stoke incline leg so I could locate a pitch to see the A4 Coronation excursion climbing the grade that the record was broken downward, next weekend. I need to locate a public footpath close to the line, not far from a pub. Problem is someone else has got the map out before me!!! Plan B may be to go and buy a map!

A pint of Bathams please RUTH.. Catch up part 1
TOM It was great to see the Can -Am again and the Can Am City Subway System nearing completion with the 3rd rail installed and the automatic system stopping the trains in the station ready for the people on the platform to board. It is good at the crossing at the end of the platform how one of the shoes on the car is still in contact with the 3rd rail over the gap.

Perhaps if we get the RV it can be converted to methane power, beans and Bathams and the high price of gas is solved, but I guess I would have ride outside though.

Great Canadian and mixed pics. I noticed the registration on the Messerschmitt ended in KV, which, if old memory serves, was issued in Coventry so it could have been the one I used to see.

ERIC Glad you liked the photos. Yes ‘The Night Owl' headboard on the front of 6233 was a train the ‘Duchess' ran when just returned from overhaul. Where 6233 is based, The Midland Railway Centre, there is a mainline connection to the Erewash Valley line between Trent Junction and Clay Cross junction south of Chesterfield. The Night Owl train ran in the evening with 6233 on a circular route from Derby via Trent Junction the Erewash Valley line and the ‘old route' to Sheffield which had the loco facing south and then the direct route back to Derby via Bradfield tunnel and Belper. The Owl is a bit of a pun as it is the nickname of Sheffield Wednesday football club, which the owner of 6233 is a fan of, is nicknamed the ‘Owls'.
Yes the Train Wreck was a great place to spend an afternoon in good company although the buffalo did not want to know me this time.
Do you think on the RTL one of the engineers is saying "No I wanted coffee not tea"
DL Yes in those days Crewe was where electrics were changed to diesel for the trains to the North and North Wales. As you say, it is rare indeed to see a loco change nowadays, although a couple of years ago the train to Holyhead was a Pendelino at Crewe a class 57/3 was coupled to the front for the trip along the North Wales coast it seemed quite a complicated procedure compared to the old days. I had heard that the London Holyhead trains were going to be in Voyager units so a loco change will not be needed.
Talking of this and reading Platform Souls reminded me of being at Crewe when steam was still about when the Red Rose express arrived from Euston behind what became a class 40 diesel. This uncoupled and left the train, I was expecting an electric to take the train forward to Liverpool instead it was a great surprise when two ex LMS class 5 4-6-0s backed on. All the time I was there a 0-6-0T ‘Jinty' was running about acting as station pilot.
I too prefer the 156s to the 158s; at least on the 158s they did include some top-light windows, that the guard can open, when the air conditioning struggles in really hot weather. Without them they would be unbearable in summer. Many thanks for the 156 and 158 URLS.. Yes I think we are very lucky still to have those marvelous semaphore signals at Shrewsbury. I believe they were all to go a few years back, but I think a lack of money at the time delayed the plan.
Thanks for the URL to DP2 I had not realized it was a far back as 1963 that DP2 left the West Coast rails for the ECML.
Reading Platform Souls, got a fair bit read while waiting for the delayed Amtrak here when going to see Tom and will give a report when I have finished.
CM3 I will send you Platform Souls when finished, in the book it very well describes about the sheer waste on BR in getting rid of nearly new steam engines. The last engines that saw out the last few months of steam on BR where 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s and a solitary Pacific.
Alan's bag has a different gremlin than mine, in that, what is needed is always at the bottom of the bag.

Pete. Good to see you back from your visit with Tom to his place, the Train Wreck Saloon and KC too, sounds as if you had a great time together again. Nice pic of the A4 doing a North Briton run from Alan, looking forward to his A4 70th anniversary pix when he gets them to you later on. The Boks are going to be a lot different proposition for the AB`s, they have got a score to settle after the AB`s exit from the RWC.
Eric. Hope those wildfires` do`nt get too close to you at all. Your 109F temperature would be WARMLY recieved here I can tell you. A nice lot of pix from you, who pushed the correct button in the RTL cab shot? Some great pix of the Gang and exhibits at Kirkwood museum. Thats a nice RV of yours, our son has a Greenriver "Wildwood" dual wheel trailer van, tows it with a Landcruiser, we live in it when we go down and stay over with them at the Vinyard he works at in Central Otago, in the South Island of NZ.
CM3. You are so right, PC`s WERE supposed to make life a lot easier, sometimes NOT! I`ll just have to keep on keeping on with that problem, the cause will be something that is sticking out like a sore thumb no doubt.
Nick. Some Canadian Rly pix for a change and a very tasty "Seefood" menu to choose from again, where do I start?
Dan. The problem i`ve got pasting will probably be something i`m doing WRONG in my operation method, a process of elimination will most likely be the story. Some nice links to the 156 and 158 DMU`s, sorry I was`nt able to shed any light on that GWR hotel at Manorbier for you, have even forgotten the name of my favorite hotel in Tenby. Hope you find a suitable photo spot on Stoke incline for your A4 anniversary shots, you should get lots of smoke action shots there with the regulator opened up.
Rob. A nice selection of trolley, diesel and random pix from you, some definate "keepers" amongst them, thanks! That storm has passed us over now but another one is coming soon.
Tom. Good to see you back from your visit to the Train Wreck Saloon and KC with Pete, you two must be classed as "REGULARS" at the Train Wreck by now. Some more great pix of the Kirkwood museum visit, and the Boyz at the Train Wreck Saloon and Tuckers Place on the RVIII get together, all "keepers"! I`m working through a process of elimination with my posting problems, it will be most probably be something that`s staring me right in the face. That shot was from the early 50's in my hometown of St Catharines Ontario,that's the Lakeshore road brideg over the current Welland Canal.The Second shot is also St Catharines,more specifically the part known as Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario. the Steamers were owned by the NS&T and ran cross lake to Toronto,hooking up with teh interurban cars which ran through St Catharines and on into Niagara Falls then through Welland and Thorld Ontario and on up the Peninsula to Port Colbourne on Lake Erie.That plane is a Fairy Firefly naval fighter bomber,they had two to three man crews depending on the mission.That plane was an ex RCN one that flew off of HMCS Magnificent.

Forgot to say goodbye to Boris, did I Hmmmmm, perhaps so - but his "kisses" upon my return are something else! <yikes> Who taught him THAT <ugh>
That Telus green isn't at all of the seasick variety - it's green-green, fer sure, fer sure. A tad on the "loud" side, eh Ahhh, anything for a buck. <boo hissssssss> Did note the trailing LRC coach . . .

If only it were true . . . so many of the railroad/railway stations in this country have gone the way of bulldozing or left to decay. Fortunately the Kirkwood Depot <station> is in fine condition because the community gives a Rat's Patoot about <aboot for Rob!> it. If not for some fine civic-minded folks, the station may very well have fallen into hard times . . . it used to be manned by Amtrak personnel, but became a "volunteer" station about 5 or 6 years ago. A shame . . . but cutbacks are the culprit - or better put, insufficient funding is - causing the cutbacks. <groan>
Yeah, when all else fails - purchase the <censored> thing!

No complaints at all regarding your links - you do a splendid job at selecting them. Problem I have is that many times one link leads to another - then another - and yet another, ‘n before one realizes it - the time for "play" has elapsed. <groan> Anyway, wouldn't want you to change your "style," Mate - keep on keeping on!

ERIC Many thanks for the photos of NYC #113 and B&O #50. Those are very small pantographs on #113; they look as though they are not much higher than the cab roof. I suppose the quiz as been answered but I'll put in my guess. Is the first photo the 3rd rail collector shoe and the second a device for removing frost and snow off the live rail.
I wonder if they would let me borrow Bobby Darin's Dream Car to take my test in.

ROB Many thanks for the great trolley, diesel airplane and ship photos. Was the public allowed over the Weller Bridge on the trolley if one wanted a ride or was it just for the dry dock workers. The SW 900s do have a lot of character I think. It was good to see a LRC 3 in action as well ,looks so much better than them sitting in the scrap line.
Thanks for the round. A beret, that my kind sir is an English flat cap. I have been told it is an indicator of how much beer I have had, when it is perfectly straight I have had enough.
It looks as though the cap will be only straight on Saturday's when I am allowed the heavier ales; mind you H&H owe me a favor or two.

That Abe Lincoln statue looks very good indeed and what a great idea to incorporate it in a bench. They have just unveiled a sculpture of Lewis & Clarke here in Jeff City which is very good as well will we take some photos and put them a the bar.

I noticed on the map in your link, there are still remains of the M&GN joint railway there. I had a look at the old atlas and the line changed from the Midland to the M&GN just to the east of Little Bytham.

ALLAN We had a great time at the Rendezvous and on our K.C. Trip.
I have some more photos from Alan of No9 on the trip to Inverness. I think the A4s look really at home in those large Scottish stations. It was good that some of the A4s were able to work out there last days by working the tightly timed Glasgow to Aberdeen expresses not relgated to goods or stopping trains.
TOM Many thanks for the photos from Rendezvous III. It is really great Kirkwood station is still with us, and with the interest in the station as shown by the plaque it should be safe for future generations to enjoy. As my return Thursday night proves, it makes all the difference being able to have somewhere to shelter from that heavy rain while waiting for the train. Can you imagine more than more than a couple or so trying to fit into that bus shelter thing at Hermann.

Nice to see a packed house out at Kaufman Stadium - I've "run" their attendance figures for the year ‘n they aren't very good. Ya know the Royals could've changed to the National League, but turned it down - that's when the Brewers said they would. A Cards-Royals NL rivalry would've really been to KCity's advantage . . . but they had the chance. Of course that's , so Boris - ring the bell ‘n the drinks are on the Proprietor . . .

Enjoyed your selection of photos. From Alaska, through Canada and the Branson Scenic Railway to that Switcher in great condition in St Louis. It looks as though the switcher has a name, I will have to look out for it next time we are on the MetroLink.

We were talking about the British Railways class 156 DMUs. Here a Scotrail unit calls at Dumfries heading for Carlisle in 2006
A locomotive class featured in the Steel Rails to Victory book. Taken into Southern Railway(UK) stock after the war and used to switch Southampton Docks these 0-6-0 tanks were given the SR class name of USA. This loco is at the Bluebell Railway and is waiting to be overhauled to running condition again.

45407 was named the Lancashire Fusiliers in preservation days
A4 Pacific No 60009 Union of South Africa has arrived a Perth from Edinburgh and is having the coal shovelled forward in the tender ready for the next part of the journey.
While the coaling was being done youngsters were invited to go on the footplate, a nice touch and something they will remember.
