G'day Gents!

Pleased to report that the Can-Am City Subway System <CACSS> is operational! All track has been permanently connected ‘n glued down onto roadbed which in turn was glued to the 3" foam insulation board forming the base. Exception - that portion at the station - still have to wire in a device that will automatically stop ‘n start the trains with a pre-set delay. Should be "cool"! Subway station nears completion - fotos taken of progress, but will be withheld ‘til June! <sorry> Want the guys coming to Rendezvous III to get first crack at seeing ‘n operating it! Thumbs Up [tup]

Great stuff regarding those 20-point turns. Of course not humorous to those in the vehicles, structures struck by the vehicles or the rescue people attempting to dislodge the occupants of those vehicles. Got a laff outta it anyway! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

My passenger fleet is comprised of ConCor <VIA Rail> - Walthers TrainLine <Amtrak> AHC/Rivarossi <VIA Rail> and RDCs from LifeLike Proto1000 <BC Rail ‘n VIA Rail>. The ConCor cars are very light and require more weight than NMRA calls for <what do THEY know about MY pike, I wonder Question [?]> Anyway, the Walthers stuff is fine as are the Rivarossi cars. LifeLike's are very heavy since they really are locomotives - even the dummies are heavy. ConCor was the only manufacturer I could find that had the Budd VIA Rail cars - before VIA decided to emblazon the Canadian flag on the corrugated sides. Anyway, love ‘em all! Thumbs Up [tup]

Been flirting with the 80s here for a few days, but thanx to a few showers ‘n a front coming in - temps are back to comfortable - muggy though. Just can't wait ‘til the "dog days" get here! <aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh>

I think you'd really "dig" the trip I'm taking up to Gaspé. It's only a matter of time before that track gets ripped up . . . Pete has commented on it a few times. Another factor is the age of those marvelous Budd cars - they have surely surpassed their shelf-life, in spite of some fine refits. That's the thing with ‘wanting' ‘n ‘doing.' Just happy that I'm still able to ‘do' ‘n that the equipment is still on the line. Thanx for the well wishes! Thumbs Up [tup]

That feature on The Canadian was reworked - considerably. Next day we'll be on our way to Montréal aboard VIA Rail. Let's hope the weather conditions are good for the visibility through the dirty windows. <grin> Guessing you opted for the earlier train - Brantford connection Question [?]

The Chaleur gets serviced in Montréal, so at least I'll depart with clean glass - interesting to note how things deteriorate as the trip progresses. Since it's the same equipment for the return trip from Gaspé, dome glass should have a good splattering of bugs ‘n grime by the time we wake up Sunday AM . . .

Oh, meant to tell the guys that someone had run through some road-kill in the DoNut MoSheen by mistake. Don't know if anyone got A-ROUNDTUIT for cleaning . . . hope those DoNuts didn't have a "gamey" taste! <yuck> No extra charge, of course! <grin>

Gotta laff outta that story about the guy who expected dry land, but wound up in the drink. <yikes> I remember winding up in a corn field - but that's a story for Rendezvous III - OR perhaps our train ride to Montréal! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I'll start with providing the correct Quiz answer: The Disneland-Alweg monorail was designed/constructed by Alweg in Germany. Alweg was founded by Swedish industrial magnate Dr. Axel Lennart Wenner-Gren in January 1953, based in Fühlingen, Germany, near Cologne. Tom –  That is my point about taking more photos of the CanAm layout, there are so many details I missed last time and taking pictures from different angles. As you mentioned, there is a lot to view! Smile [:)]

I actually had the location typed under my picture last night, but I must have missed to copy that line when I copied the rest of the text. Anyway, the picture was taken at Atchison Railway Museum, Atchison, KS. It shows Burlington Northern caboose #10410. Originally a CB&Q caboose. The museum plans to restore it to the CB&Q colors.

The info on CPR is interesting even if the Canadian today is run by VIA. Too bad they changed the route to the CN route. But there are very beuatiful views in those photos and I guess they are all taken along the present CN route.Smile [:)]

The yellow dotted line on the map/photo is the future underground line. The Årsta Bridges are over the water at the bottom of the map/photo.

More tracks are needed through Stockholm, the traffic now is at its max capacity. The total cost is calculated to $2.5 billion.Smile [:)]

Cross-Canada rail adventure IS definitely a hi-lite for us - even though we never experienced the original route. What we did see <twice each way> was absolutely magnificent by any standard I know of. That equipment is on the way OUT - "word" is that Colorado Railcar will be manufacturing those single level full dome cars of theirs - don't know about the coaches or bedroom cars. Sparse info at best - but CHANGE is on the way - count on it. So, if you ‘n your lady are planning a trip, don't procrastinate, Mate - don't put it off! Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob's comments on underground construction vs above are RIGHT ON! We went thru that in these parts with a portion of our MetroLink expansion. The costs are astro for tunneling . . . but "they" seem to do it anyway. And you wouldn't believe the cost-overrides due to infrastructure realignments, etc. Interesting conversation - just haven't been able to ‘chime in' . . .

Thanx for the info on the monorail - I've ridden the one in Seattle . . .

Good Morning Barkeep and All Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  ‘Nother lovely day here in the coalfields although we may get thunderstorms later on, but it's nice now.  Gas holding at $3.65.

Rob was by with comments and information.

Pete was by as well - Budd was pretty well covered up at that time, not that they were unhappy to get the order.  Their plant and just about everything else is gone now.  Enough to make you weep.

Nick was in - expect to hear from you once the sun gets to the west side of the building (lol).

Eric - I couldn't play the quiz because I had no idea - thanks for the information in the links.

$2.5 billion?  Multiply that 5X and you'll have a more accurate figure unless the engineers have some good ways of cost containment. 

OSP - E-mails rec'd and responses sent.  I watched the Cards and Pirates last night - good game for the Birds with some ferociously good infield play on both sides. 

Canadian material is always good - lovely picture of the Budd diner, and I remember that flag very well.  I enlarged the passenger pictures on the CanAm - nice!  NMRA standards are like any other in that they apply to an ideal world.  The donut  machine is in trouble?  Well, I'll pass on the venison crullers but how about a dozen of the ‘possum glazed?  As Granny once said, "He's mine; I saw him first!"

 I'll have apint and a round for the house please. Hope to be back soon with trip report - managed to get a seat inthe dining car both north and south bound - even thought he journey time is only about 1 hour 10 mins for 100 ish miles.

Tom-Yes I got booked on the 3:40 back no ,connnection throught o Brantford but that's fine that's what Go transit is for. I don't think any of those original CPR cars from that train are left.There is a restored wooden baggage/combine at the Steam and tech Museum in Ottawa that's owned by the Bytown Historical Society folks,and they run occational steam,excurtions with it and their CPR Pacific.it's the same vintage and well could have been part of that train 1903 built I believe.

The only reason I can think for the shorter time the one way is less grades and fewer station stops.Some of those early trains stopped at every barn in every hick town along the route.

TOM. It was a great CPR 'The Canadian' train day yesterday with Rob's post on the passenger operations on the CP and the different CP locomotive liveries on the Can-Am.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

Good news the Can-Am Subway is in operation and the station nearing completion.Thumbs Up [tup]Bow [bow]

Good and true words for Allan Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]and may I join in a toast on ANZAC DayThumbs Up [tup]. There is a railway connection with ANZAC, as one of BR Standard Britannia class 4-6-2s was named ANZAC. Perhaps Allan saw this locomotive as it was allocated to Holyhead shed at the west end of the North Wales Coast Line and used to work the expresses along the coast line, like the Irish Mail. I think the Kinmel Park Camp, near Rhyl, where Allan was at is near the coast line.

As I say it seems as some museums don't realize that a lot of people who travel a long distance to visit a railway museum are railfans, often knowing before hand what exhibits are there. To think that going to a museum and not be able to see a lot of interesting exhibits is sadThumbs Down [tdn]. I can fully understand if it is a workshop and for safety reasons it is not possible to let the public in, but cannot understand when it is just a shed when all it takes (as far as I can see) is unlocking the door and turning the lights onConfused [%-)]. I would not mind if there were a small charge for a conducted tour of the sheds.

Remind me to tell you about a horse ride they was having at a preserved line next time we meet up.Smile [:)]

I have some photos taken at the Liverpool Road station site in Manchester which was the original station for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. The site is now a museum and the photos were taken at an exhibition there for the L&M 150th anniversary in 1980.

Ex L&B LION was giving rides in replica period coaches. Lion was a star in the Titfield Thunderbolt.

 

Class 5 4-6-0 No 5407 in LMS livery. The locomotive is still working main line steam specials today.Bow [bow].

With relatives coming in <hers> just before I depart - Juneau ‘n the bride will have lots to keep them busy whilst I'm twiddling away the time enjoying the good life in Oh Canada! Yeah!! [yeah] Did I plan this right, or what!?!?! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

That's the way we do it with the Can-Am City Subway System <CACSS>! Haven't ventured down to the train room today, but I will. Still have to get some finishing touches done with the station. Then there's the "blocking  in" of the area before ‘n after the station. The only view available to the onlooker will be the trains at the station. It's long enough to handle four subway cars - so it won't be one of those "now you see it, now you don't" affairs. <grin>

Yes, in my discussions with Molly <and there have been a few> she's rather enamored with the two of you. Pete certainly has charmed her out of  . . . well let me restart that! Pete has been quite the gentleman, deferential to her wishes, but absolutely a flop at mastering typing techniques. You on the other hand have been more than a match for her in the mud wrestling department! She appreciates the fact that you like chocolate pudding! Didn't know Speed-o's were "in" for that kinda thing! <yikes>

Recently noted that Canada has only 1 vet remaining alive from WWI - John Babcock, who resides in Spokane, WA <he became a US citizen and joined the US Army in the 1920s!>  Here in the states, our last passed away on Feb 22nd - Howard Ramsey was one month shy of his 109th B'day . . . Perhaps Allan knows if any ANZAC vets are still with us.

Tom-Ah yes people watching , should have at least an hour before my train departs ( as long as we don't get snarled by frieght trains )I did enjoy the meatings with the livestock board,I only worried for a second when I saw Biff the head inspector reach into his briefcase,I caught sight of the shoulder length rubber gloves and almost passed out ,but he bypased them for a ballpoint penBlindfold [X-)]Wow!! I have to say that when Pete and I were signed on she took measurements ofr those matching banana yellow speedos. luckily they didn't find one in Boris's size,so they allowed for a rule change for him to wear his favourite yellow loin clothShock [:O]

I await the photo's of the subway system once the rendezvous is over with Thumbs Up [tup]I did thoroughly enjoy the CanAm photo run by's of the various versions of the Canadian.

Yes one last surviving Great War Vet for us. there still is a push for a fullstate funeral if the family so wishes it. I saw an interview with him last eyar on TV he's still quite spry for his at the time 107 yrs. He has a wicked sence of humour and was quite the good story teller.

Henry Allingham of Britain, aged 111. The only survivor to have served from beginning to end of the conflict, he started in the Royal Navy and then ended in the Air Force, seeing action at the Somme.

Harry Patch of Britain, 109. Called up in 1917 and saw action in the trenches of the Belgian front, including during the murderous 3rd Battle of Ypres. Injured by a shell in the same year.

Delfino Borroni of Italy, 109. Joined an elite unit in 1917 and notably fought against Austro-Hungarian forces in the Tyrol.

Francesco Chiarello, also of Italy, 109. Called up in 1918 and saw action in his country's final battles of the war.

Frank Buckles, United States, 107. Joined up by lying about his age when his country entered the war in 1917 and served as an ambulance driver in England and France.

John Babcock of Canada, aged 107. Was sent to Britain as a junior soldier with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1917, but did not see action because he was too young.

Franz Kuenstler of Germany, aged 107. Joined a Hungarian artillery unit in February 1918, and served in Italy. Only survivor of the Austro-Hungarian forces.

It would be much wiser to stay on the surface and add two more tracks. But then they have to nag a little bit out of couple of old buildings (from the 1600’s) and you can’t do that. About the monorail in Seattle, I stayed at a hotel in Seattle and the monorail went through that building. But I never tried it.Smile [:)]

Well yet another busy week behind me as I have the flower beds prepped and 3 yards of bark mulch on the driveway to be distributed... Hallway painted, new baseboards nailed in place in both hallway and kitchen. And I'm still slugging away at the garageSad [:(] Oh the horror!

So... Coalminer, never seen a pair of Fog glasses before, eh? most people haven't as they only come out in the fog but thanks for asking. For that I'll buy ya a Kieth's!

Mike Loved the pics of the CV. I've always liked their Steam roster and would dearly love to have one of their 2-10-4's for the MESS as they were a unique breed of engine with CN accents.

Tom and Nick thanks for sharing pics of the Layout! Tom I'never realized your layout was that big, really looks impressive!

Rob: To be honest with you I'm not completely excited about going up there this time of year as the fog will be a factor that will keep me on my toes as Bergs don't always show up on the radar all that well. We will definately be running at reduced speeds in restricted visibility.

Must be just the stage of life that I'm at, but I'm really taken aback when viewing film clips of the armies in WWI. And now - all but a veritable handful left alive ‘round the globe. Won't be that long when the same situation will involve the WWII vets. Yeah, just aging - time marches on ‘n doesn't wait for any man.

Only thing I'd do differently today would be to put out the running lights of that JO - off camera of course! <uh oh>

Yes the attitude of the staff and volunteers at a preserved railway or museum has a great impact on whether a repeat visit is made and on the answer you give when someone asks about the place visited. I have to say though that the folks we talked to at Exporail could not have been better who seemed genuinely pleased to talk to people with more than a passing interest in trains and streetcarsApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

Yes a lot of the railway drivers in England who used to have a favorite landmark which meant they were nearly home and in steam days, for the stokers where they could stop the heavy firing. Letting the fire burn down if the loco was going on shed or getting it in a good condition for the fireman who was taking over after the crew change.

Glad you liked the photosThumbs Up [tup]. The coal advert was a clever pun on the title of the L&M celebrations, as the event was known as ‘Rocket 150' ,after the name of the locomotive that won the Rainhill Trials in 1829.Smile [:)]

Some mixed photos from me today from the late 1970s.

 

A while ago we were talking about steam locomotives on London Underground. They bought some pannier tanks from the Great Western to work their works trains. Some have been preserved, here is one in LT colors at Keighley on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

  

A 0-6-0 Pannier tank in GWR colors at Tyesley, Birmingham.

Many of the preserved lines used Industrial locomotives to haul their trains in their early days. This is the Severn Valley Railway with Ex War Deparment 0-6-0 ST No 193 'Shropshire' built by Hunslet of Leeds.

Manning Wardle Works No 2047 'Warwickshire' at Bridgnorth on the SVR. This locomotive worked at a cement works about a mile from my old home in RugbyThumbs Up [tup], good to see her preservedApprove [^]

Narrow gauge 'Linda on the Ffestiniog Railway another Hunslet built locomotive.

In their last days on BR the Deltics allocated to Finsbury Park depot in London had a white surround to the driving cab windows. Here 55009 'Alycidon' arrives at Doncaster with a Leeds train.

Earlier in the week,PETE & I touched on the Ffestiniog & Blaenau narrow gauge line that was taken over by the Great Western,well here is one of the transporter wagons they used to connect Manod quarry with the Festiniog system-They built their own 2` gauge slate hutches for this traffic-as far as I can tell,the wagons were rated at 14 tons load,which fits with 6 hutches at 2 tons load each plus just under 7 cwt each-sounds about right......

To quote the Beatles "Fixing a hole" from the inimitable "Sgt Pepper" -and when my mind is wandering....there I will go (Lalalalala)......Here we have a variation on a theme ,this time from the 4` gauge Padarn Rly,which ran from Gilfach Ddu-to Pen-Scoins,where the hutches were lowered down an inclined plane to Port Dinorwic-this port was servrd by the London & North Western Railway ( I believe ) as as well as boasting a delightfully minimalist yard (which could only be switched in one direction) also featured mixed gauge grade crossings wher the slim line was laid over the standard and removed between train

And now some for Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Having startled you with those Irish railcars the other night ( I have rarely seen anybody turn that colour without medical intervention before....) here is something more soothing-one of the three Hunslet tanks that worked the Padarn in it`s latter days---The tall chimney gives it a lovely Victorian feel-the timber additions to the cab remind one of the sometimes ferocious weather in those parts..

Like the walrus & the carpenter,we have talked of many things-among them recently,Double Fairlies-Here is an 1871 view of the 1st of the kind "Little Wonder" (1869) at Portmadoc with all 4 types of the famous quarrymens coaches

Here`s a taster for next week-the engine is 19th century,odd parts of those buildings prolly date back to about the 8th century -the town itself prolly dates back to before we fell under the Roman Eagle (54 B.C or so-although the village I live in never did-for some reason the Legions just gave up with this bit of Wales-it was obviously just not worth the bother

The line is the Welshpool & Llanfair-it sits in a very green & pleasant part of the Marches ( on the Welsh side !!!)-was a common carrier,rather than the more usual Welsh lines which tended towards the single industry support ...Have visited but not yet ridden-long story--but have pix of a former German Military loco with mixed stock,also pix of the lines `home` engines ,plus what a narrow gauge Great Western branch terminus with Service facility should look like

O.K-gonna take a wee walk round the block and get some fresh air-if I dont get the last 3 days post dealt with tonight ,I promise its my first job tomorrow--principal memory from fast flipping thru everything----those Budd cars and the Can-Am retro night--this place continues to astonish  Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup] 

O.K-I have pen & paper in hand -am making notes as we speak-will slip one under the door tomorrow if that is agreeable-for now,fare thee well gentlemen ( who would have thought I would lose 17 straight hands of `Killer Queen`-Aless trusting person would suspect collusion )-

Leon, just an icy cold Keith's, please! I am thirsty after a pretty warm day here in the desert.

A busy day today so my visit is later than planned.

Rob –  That interurban is on the list to be refurbed. It still had the original truck at the other end. Yeah!! [yeah]

A bunch of interesting VIA photos!Thumbs Up [tup] Including one of the RDC’s! I still have to buy a model of a RDC. The only own memory I have of RDC’s is from Union Station in Washington back in 1992. Some RDC’s were parked on track 15 during daytime with their engines idling all day. All the exhaust fumes came across the platform to track 16 and were sucked into the X2000. Terrible.Grumpy [|(] We finally managed to convince Amtrak that those engines had to be stopped while the RDC’s were sitting on track 15.Mischief [:-,]

That FPA4 almost looks brand new!Smile [:)]

Fergie –  Wow , you have been busy doing all that stuff!Smile [:)]

Tom –  Almost icy conditions again?Wow!! [wow] We had 94Ëš today. But we haven’t started the air conditioning yet.Smile [:)]

I don’t know if transportation planners are worse than other planners but I have never seen any project being finished to budget.Wink [;)] 

What was the problem with that expansion of the light rail in St. Louis?Question [?] I think you’ve mentioned it once before but my memory...Confused [%-)] Maybe something for the Rendezvous?

I like the photos from Montréal’s Central Station but there is one detail I wonder about. I can see light under the cars. Do they perform any kind of maintenance or inspection while the train is sitting at the station? Question [?]

Interesting photos from the Skyline Car!Thumbs Up [tup] Perfect to first have dinner and then get up into the dome and enjoy the views around the track! Stealthy Pete is nowhere to be seen!Wow!! [wow]

Part III shows kind of a cloudy, maybe rainy day! Yes, I remember the disappointment with the bus ride. 

Pete –  Oh, yes, I remember our trouble with the management! It included Senior Manager Lars, we just tried to help but he didn’t like it for some reason. Whistling [:-^]

Do you know that a Swede participated in the Rainhill Trials in 1829? John Ericsson built his locomotive, the Novelty, in 6 weeks and it was 4 mph faster than the Rocket. But a pipe overheated and it couldn’t be repaired quickly enough. John Ericsson later immigrated to the US and was the man behind the srew-propeller and the Monitor during the Civil War. We'll chat about the MetroLink system at Rendezvous III - and by the by, MetroLink is the proper name - it's not Metro as I've noted some use <not you!>. Note the subtle difference in the way it is spelled - LA uses Metrolink whereas here in St. Louis it is MetroLink. Minutia, granted - but as an old song lyric stated, "Little things mean a lot." The platforms at Montréal's Central Station have lighting beneath - am unaware of any maintenance or other efforts underway while the trains are at the station. VIA Rail has a major facility in Montréal where all the long distance trains receive service prior to departure. It's a fascinating set up ‘n best viewed from a vantage point in one of the local hotels with a room facing the tracks. We always request such a room, just so I can watch the make-up ‘n break-up of the trains. <cool>

Good Faternoon Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please, round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Cool with rain today (maybe some snow tonight) .

Lots to took at today:

Pete - I understand what you mean about "progress."  Midland Ry 3 cylinder is truly a mechanics delight.  Also liked the Panier tank picture. 

Fergie - Had to ask the question - we have lots of stuff in the mines which nobody has seen before.  Did yard work yesterday before the temperature dropped close to 35 degrees last evening.  Finished juuuust before the rain got here.  Your comments on the CV were well taken.  The 2-10-4s were the biggest locomotives in New England.  They stayed on the upper end of the CV, of course, as they were too big to run on the "banana belt" 

Rob - Apple critters - maybe for the refreshment cart for the next darts tournament.  Can't wait to see what Nick dreams up for the "chef's surprise."  Good VIA pictures - thank you. 

Mike was in - Enjoyed the St. Albans pictures - spent lots of time up there over the years.  The list of Great War veterans gets shorter.  It was truly not Henry's time if he made it through the Somme.  Fred Buckles, IIRC, lives in WV. 

Eric stopped by with comments and pictures.  Interurban on truck tires  followed by a fine looking Brill car, and then the narrow gauge items and the PE steeplecab.  If you can't find something in that collection....Your comment on the RDCs was on target.  Used to bet pretty intense at North Station as the B&M only ran Budds for a long time.  I will bring some pictures to the rendezvous.  John Ericsson is a fascinating story - he was ahead of his time in many respects. 

Nick was in with comments and some fine looking exotic beasties.  There's always a prototype for something, you just have to know where to look.  Quarryman's cars  are interesting to say the least.

OSP - E-mail received and answered.  PRR Q Class, another mechanic's delight.  They actually did pretty well.  Train tickets - half the fun is having a fistful of tickes (preferably with sleeper reservations) with your name on them.  Have fun!  I remember more than a few WWI folks around when I worked at the VA in Jamaica Plain  - lots of stories from them.  Good movie picks as well.  The one about Tyrus really captured his essence, IMHO.  One of my favorite lines in "Field of Dreams" deals with him.  I'll take a frmed copy of the Railway Express poster, please.

NICK. Many thanks for the great old photos of Rhyl Miniature Railway with those fine Bassett-Lowke locomotivesThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]. It looks from the first photos that they were taken when the railway was fairly new and possibly in the First World War judging by the some of the men in uniform on the train. In the last but one photo it really brought back the wonderful smell of the steam that hung around the station thereApprove [^]. If I recall correctly the tunnel I mentioned is behind the locomotives in the station. The amusement machine would be behind those people to the right in the photo.

In the 2nd photo it looks like George Formby (Turned out nice againBig Smile [:D]) on the loco's footplate. The photos are definitely ‘keepers'Yeah!! [yeah] I wonder how many young people bring rock back for their friends after a holiday at the seaside like we used to.Question [?]

Really great photos of the North Wales Narrow GaugeApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. I can't recall seeing a photo of a 6-wheel flat wagon beforeYeah!! [yeah]. The 6-wheeler wagons I mostly remember, were the milk wagons with their distinctive 'Ting Ting Ting' sound as they passed over the rail jointsApprove [^].

A former Dinorwic Quarry Hunslet works No. 849 'Thomas Bach', built in 1904, on the Llanberis Lake Railway, a preserved line, in the shadow of Snowdon. Than runs on part of the Pendarn Railway trackbed

ERIC Around the time of the L&M 150th celebrations there was a documentary on the Rainhill trialists and there was talk of Novelty being sabotagedShock [:O]. Interesting link to John EricssonThumbs Up [tup]. It seems he was way ahead of his time investigating the use of solar and tides to provide power in the 19th centuryBow [bow].

The Deltics finished in BR service in the early 1980s. They had been the top diesel power on the East Coast Main Line since their introduction in 1961 until the High Speed Trains took over the expresses in the mid to late 1970s. During the last years they regularly worked London to York trains. I am not sure why Finsbury Park depot chose white window surrounds to decorate their allocation of Deltics in their last days at the depot, unless it was because when the Delics were new and were in a two tone green livery they had white window surrounds.

D 9000 'Royal Scots Grey' in preservation days, painted in the original livery but with the yellow front end which came in after a few years of the Deltics being new and are now required for locomotives on the main line.

 6 of the 22 Deltics have been preservedApprove [^]. A preserved Deltic can be seen on the main line working specials.

So-to business-have my catch up notes before me-please excuse the random nature of the responses ,I tend to go through name by name ,adding to each as the posts require,rather than strict chronological order

CM3-Yes the pic of Enistimon on the West Clare is rather splendid-not so much for the rail specifics as for the view of rural Ireland half a century ago (although crop out the train & buildings and it could be 3000 years )--the boxcar you queried is a P.G.E car-from the Model Power range,I found a U.K supplier of this brand when I first started delving into U.S. H.O-long before we had a `puter,and found they fit all my required criteria-a reasonable range of trains that are of an acceptable standard of near-enough accuracy,they are made in Slovenia (Yugoslavia  ) and conform to euro rather than N.M.R.A wheel standards-and thus,will run on my track (back-to-back measurements through turnouts are the problem), and most of all-affordable-cars at $10 a pop,locos (with all wheel drive & can motors) at about $40-50 a time-less than half of equivalent U.S brands entry level gear,let alone the Gold/Platinum/Iridium/Plutonium hi detail stuff...........Enjoyed the `tales from the porch` observations on big rigs stuck up in the holler Thumbs Up [tup]--I too am an advocate of lead flashing as ballast-have collected pounds of it over the years,free,from building sites I have worked on---please allow me to treat you to a bag of possum glazed (with sprinkles) to soak up your morning brew (although the groundhog crepes with maple syryp are starting to attract quite a following) Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

ERIC-wonderful yard shot of the BNSF cab etc-every layout should have a corner like that-not only a parking place for the `limping Lulu`s` of the fleet,but somewhere to really go to town on the general clutter,practice extreme weathering etc..nice Approve [^]    -Liked the interurban btw------The early Festiniog engines were all open cabbed-as was the trend at the time on many railways-not sure when they were enclosed,if you notice,the crews are also wearing white jackets-another commonplace of the time-these were required to be clean at the start of each day.........The Rhyl line is/was 15" gauge-a model in the broadest sense of the term-it is an interesting area of study,falling into two camps-rich mans toy on the one hand and smallest viable load carrier on the other--The two best known examples are the Romney,Hythe & Dymchurch on the south coast (1st category) and the Ravenglass & Eskdale on the north-west coast (2nd category)--is too much there to go into here,but will prepare an evening lecture & slideshow on the subject,if it meets with general approval................loved that Brill car and the lovely little N/G engine & cars got me right where I live-good stuff Approve [^]

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-the freight car you were curious about is in B+O `Timesaver` livery -is from Model Power (see note above) and is part of a block of 5 normally run together:-3 of those,a B+O 40` gon & a Chessie 40` box......Although you have all been too kind to mention it-the low riders in the pix are all closer to `S` or even `O` scale than `H.O`-they are from the Mattel `Hot wheels` range and were a present from my daughter-they are used partly for that reason and partly to `force` the perspective on narrow baseboards for pix purposes-plus they are kinda cute.................Especially enjoyed the `Canadian Nostalgia`pieces of late (somebody has the travel bug methinks.........)and also the world wide artwork Approve [^]--now lets give the pot a stir-how about a running shed for some of those earlier `Canadian` locos-to keep them available for charter work and so forth...............Whistling [:-^]---Now then--"We" are not the bloody president ( as you so rightly suggest )-As I understand it ,Her Brittanic Majesty ,as both Elizabeth Windsor & Sovereign of the realm etc is entitled to refer to herself in the plural-anybody else so doing,risks having the idiot Tony and the Blair witch dispatched as ambassadors ( a terrible fate...)......Which brings me neatly to that temperance poster-Lordy lordy-I would need a few belts behind the belt before I would risk a dance with any of them-was especially disturbed by the one at front left-it`s Boris in a frock isn`t it ..???-please say it is...........whilst on the subject of disturbing-the pix of the transfer to the bus-there is an ould fella with a white stick making his way up the platform-now-white stick-visually impaired-is anybody helping him-not a bit of it--welcome to the new millenium guys Disapprove [V]-not having a pop at your good selves,its just the background detail that I notice....apologies-rant over

Take your point R.E the pic of `Taliesin`-front end has a light glow from the chimney but plenty from the safety valves,rear end has loads from the chimney -perhaps something to do with running uphill ???-a well observed point........You have certainly put up a better shot of Thomas Bach than the one that I slipped in last week with the Fairlie Thumbs Up [tup] not sure if the F&B transporter wagons were new build or conversions-assume as they were provided just for that traffic they would not have been common users-although they are not marked as such-somewhere I have a very old pic of F&B engine `Cackler`which towered over its coaches-looked not unlike Tal-Y-Lyn #1-will scour the library
