Seriously, I stand in awe of men like Forney and his colleagues.  All that math to make the magic, and NO computers to help them, just a pencil and paper. Maybe slide rules, if they had them in the 1890's.  Maybe.  

And then putting the plans on paper with T-squares, French curves, triangles, steel compasses, India ink bow-point pens, and a lot of patience.  No CAD, not even dreamed of.  I took a mechanical drafting course in high school in 1971, darn near the end of the era and used all those implements, so I know wherof I speak. 

That's how that mind-blowing schematic drawing of the UP 4-12-2 Mr. Jones posted on April 3d was done.
