I just read part of an article from Classic Trains about Berkshire locomotives. In this article, it stated: "The Norfolk Southern Railway purchased five 2-8-4 locomotives in 1940........'. I thought "Norfolk Southern" was the result of merger between N & W and Southern Railways sometime in the 1980's. Was there ANOTHER "Norfolk Southern"? From what I could gather, it ran from North Carolina to Eastern Virginia. I've never heard of this one! Anybody??

The original Norfolk Southern name dates back to the 1880's. It became a Class I railroad with just over 800 miles of track whose mainline ran from Norfolk to Charlotte. It became a part of the Southern Ry System in 1974 but continued to operate under the NS name until 1982 when the present NS Corp was formed.

Yup that's why Norfolk Southern has a "Norfolk Southern" Heritage diesel unit. It's wearing the 1950's paint scheme of the first Norfolk Southern.
