Yup that's why Norfolk Southern has a "Norfolk Southern" Heritage diesel unit. It's wearing the 1950's paint scheme of the first Norfolk Southern.

The original Norfolk Southern name dates back to the 1880's. It became a Class I railroad with just over 800 miles of track whose mainline ran from Norfolk to Charlotte. It became a part of the Southern Ry System in 1974 but continued to operate under the NS name until 1982 when the present NS Corp was formed.

Norfolk Southern in 1940?

I just read part of an article from Classic Trains about
Berkshire locomotives. In this article, it stated: "The Norfolk Southern Railway purchased five 2-8-4 locomotives in 1940........'.        I thought "Norfolk Southern" was the result of merger between N & W and Southern Railways sometime in the 1980's. Was there ANOTHER "Norfolk Southern"? From what I could gather, it ran from North Carolina to Eastern Virginia. I've never heard of this one! Anybody??
