Yield pricing gone wild

These are eye-watering prices for a trip between NYP & Boston; and a possible public relations debacle for Amtrak:

Certainly not the way to increase public approval of Amtrak and passenger trains.

200 bucks a seat on the busiest travel day of the year. How much to fly between the same cities?

The arilines are probably charging a premium for travel on those days assuming that you can even get a seat.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

This week $184-194, one way for one adult, by air, according to Google

A quick look minutes ago shows that for Wednesday, NYP-BOS NE Regional coach seats, when they can be had at all, for $258.  Seats are available on Acela for $350 & $500 (first class).

At $774 (as shown on the original link), my guess is that seats weren't selling all that well, hence the $258 figure.

Someone at Amtrak's pricing department could use a swift kick in the seat of their pants.

$774/4 = 194.50  - that was no $774 per person.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Prices seem absolutely reasonable to me given it's for four tickets with little advanced notice.    Classic entitled New Yorker making demands.    Another reason why I suspect that a lot of those state or city based transit agencies are not paying their fair share for use of Amtrak tracks or infrastructure.

The $774 is for two adults, and two kids.  Presumably the adult fare is higher, and the child fare lower, than the average.  I would not be surprised to see the 'adult' fare $258 as indicated -- it works out 'exact' if the children were 'half fare' each.

Apparently, if anyone deserves a kick in the pants, it's me.  I didn't read carefully the number of people included in the quote; that changes things. Thanks for pointing this out.  Mea culpa

On a related note, the Chicago to Milwaukee Amtrak service is FINALLY moving to variable pricing which I thought they should have done 20-30 years ago.    Good news for further cost recovery with that Corridor.
