There are many US territories all the way past the international date line. That is why US forecasters go so far west. It is same for air travel FAA coverage. Out of Oakland.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
The hurricane designation is also used in the Eastern and Central Pacific Ocean, probably because most of these storms originate near the west coast of Mexico and since reporting responsibilities are under the National Hurricane Center.
Here's a dumb question- I thought hurricanes were only in the Atlantic and in the Pacific it's a typhoon. Or does it depend on being north or south of the equator? I've never been sure.
The Salton Sea almost certainly got a bit of water from TS Hilary, but the heaviest rainfall near the sea was on Mount Laguna. The eye of the storm was pretty much folowing slightly west of the Coast Range, so the highest winds and heaviest rains were in the mountains.
Rain on the coast was around 2 inches and I don't think there were any tropical storm level sustained winds on the coast - the day was pretty calm along the coast with winds finally kicking up abut 5PM.
I wonder if this will impact the Salton Sea?
New threat to the SD&AE RR. Hurricane shut it down previously. As well the 2 southern transcons may get battered.
