The present track prediction of TS Ian has it becoming a major CAT 3 after passing over western Cuba. Then aimed at the corner of the Florida panhandle south of Tallahassee near Oak Island. That will have the west coast of Florida on the east side of the hurricane. No prediction beyond that.
Hope that it does not traverse the Atlantic east coast and possibly try to repeat Sandy? Suppose it will have effect on the Super Star. Might just cancel the Tampa legs and follow Meteor route? Of course that all depends on where CSX ties their crossing gates up. That tying up closes the track to any passenger trains.
NWS track possible has the eye going just west of Tampa. Maybe Super Star will be cancelled south of JAX Tuesday and definitely Wedensday. Here is link to NWS maps.
HURRICANE IAN (noaa.gov)
No matter what projections show any one even near track need to make early preparations Including this poster. Hurricanes are very often known to make crazy track changes That means where is going to go after passing thru Georgia Worse case would be going off Carolina coast and sliding on up the east coast. I make no predicition jjust be prepared.
Star #91 cancelled today at least south of WASH. Tomorrow shows sold out. Nothing yet for Wedensday.
#92 operaiting out MIA today cancelled tomorrow. Will operate from JAX tomorrow
Do not take this as gospel. Suspect changes as no service bulletin has yet to be posted as of 13:45.
EDIT ---Changed
91/26 Sep now terminated JAX.
cpmputer messed up could not delete 2 previous posts.
Wife very upset/ IAN track as of 0500 today (WED) from Kissimmee - Daytona covers at least 10 hoseholds with 30 or more kin. Scrambling here already some may need to stay here "IF" any displaced.
IAN might screw up the whole SE railroading of Amtrak. The predicted track. ( We know how unreliable the track of IAN has been so far ) has it going near Charleston to Charlote. That will cut off Silver service, Crescnt, Carolinian, and NC Piedmont service. Later both Roanoke and possible Cardinal.
P
Sun rail just reported wash out somewheree south of down town Orlando. That is going to have effect on the Super star until fixed. Unable to have more info yet.
Cannot find any info on the Sun Rail washout. WESH TV showed a quick picture of what appeared a torn up concrete bridge. Looked familiar as somewhere south of Kissimmee but take that as a very very WAG.
Now for you people from PHL north. Another NHC route turn takes IAN close to your area. However, that is doubtful as none of the various predictors got it right when it was south of Cuba. It might go out into the Atlantic?. Absolutely no guess here but make your own by looking at the 10 day jet stream forecast. IAN burned all my bridges trying to guess.
Jet Stream Winds at 300 mb (~30,000 ft) (GFS 10-day Forecast) (weatherstreet.com)
Current NHS track shows it headed to West Virginia
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Here is short video of Sun Rail damages. Do not recall that single track location but looks like somewhere near Kissimmee station near a swamp.

Sun rail opens tupper rail station. However, report that stations on south are still closed. It will take several more weeks to open rest of route. Does several weeks mean 2 or 3 or longer? Now what that means for Amtrak is no service to south Florida. The thanksgiving high passenger season is just about the corner on Amtraki
A possible solution to this problem could be for the Meteor to continues to Orlando. The previous day's meteor would originat at Orlando. The equipment could be serviced at Sabnfords's maintenance facility as the now canceled Sunset once was.
Route the Star onto the CSX ( SAL ) "S" line to join the route to MIA at Lakeland. That does require a pilot from JAX to LAK. Since CSX is tight on T&E maybe Amtrak could hire a qualified retired engineer. Or maybe even a previously qualified one that would a requior a requalifican ride (s). Since the route to TPA will be faster the Star could wait at JAX to swap passengers or maybe even cars.
North bound that would not work so the Star would need to carry most of the passengers to south Florida.
SunRail restores service to one station - Trains
Sun Rail repairs are going to be to at least last of Oct. month. Time for a directed service on the CSX "S" line JAX - LAK for one of the Silvers and other Silver to Orlando. Oh wait Amtrak managment ????
