Possible future Amtrak operational problems
Posted by blue streak 1 on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 12:32 PM

Another atmospheric river is heading for BC, Washington state and Oregon.  Wonder how this will affect Builder operations.  Maybe time to operate baby builders MSP <> CHI?  1" rain - 5 - 10" snow.  10 inches of rain = 50 - 100 inches of snow?

Yesterday (WED) 97 had a predestrian incident somewhere around FtLauderdale.  For whatever reason 98 left MIA at 1500 instead of 0810 today.  Amtrak did not tweet anything except that 98 would be delayed.  Could it be mechanical or more likely no crew?  Maybe inbound 97 crew delayed yesterday and was only crew available today.  Once again why no info about 98 today?

In my experiences - trains that operate outside their normal time slots tend to get delayed even more that when they are operating in their scheduled time slots.  This applies to both freight trains and Amtrak.

The Schedules for both Amtrak and Freight are 'designed' for both to exist with minimum delays to any of the participants - in the IDEAL.  Realities can be somewhat different.

Amtrak does not possess either the equipment or crews to be able to START their trains On Time daily when one of the get struck by serious delay.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Why is Amtrak still on its cancellation  policy?  Amtrak reports 85% employees  on the job.  Is Amtrakwaiting to see if absences / cases go back up?  From newsmwire.

There was good news in the infection and quarantine figures for Amtrak: The number of employees out sick or quarantined due to COVID-19 has declined 85% from a peak of 722 the week ending Jan. 1.   .15 x 722  =  what?   108?

Is this any way to run any  RR?

It's the P42's in the cold weather, in their aged state they drop like flies.   That is what is causing this issue.   I saw it first hand 2-3 winters ago waiting on the Texas Eagle Departure.    Just on the South Platforms, Amtrak had no less than three dead P42's they could not move under their own power,   two were decoupled from the train and sitting dead on the tracks but pushed up against the end of track impact device.    Amtrak has all the Siemens Locomotives delivered for the Midwest Compact but not all the replacements for the P42 have been delivered yet or possibly ordered yet.
