I once heard that the mixed trains in Kansas continued in operation as long as they did because of a state law allowing passengers to ride a freight train on any line that did not have any scheduled passenger service.  I'm not sure of the veracity of such a legal situation.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

The Santa Fe once ran a mixed consist between Wichita and North Wichita designated as Trains #67 and #68.  The consist was a locomotive, a box car, and a baggage/passenger car combo.  I'm curious about the history of this train, what was the reason for its inception and when was it finally discontinued.
